Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian enclave hosting many local artists’ studios. The narrow, winding streets of this neighbourhood were revitalised years ago, and visitors can now stroll through this area to view magnificent mansions dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. A highlight not miss: Museu Chacará do Céu, a former mansion turned museum which houses works by prominent Brazilian modern artists.

Pros: 1) lovely neighbourhood with alot of character, and food places near by 2) alot of lovrly touchea - table tennis table, fooseball table and the swings 3) very clean 4) the people there are very polite and nice. SPECIAL thank you to Sidma who really went above and beyond to help with any issues. We were given rooms on the top floor, but as my mum has osteoporosis she can sometimes struggle with lots of stairs. I spoke to Sidma about this and as soon as ground floor rooms were available he sorted us out and there was very good communication between the people at the hotel as when he wasnt there the peoppe behind the desk knew what was happening. I was very impressed and it made the move stress free Cons: 1) The breakfast is very limited - especially for vegetarians and vegans. Just had bread and pastries. However the fruit was delicious. 2) the walls in the room are very dark, and limited lighting in the room as well as the corridors. As a whole, I would reccomend and would look to stay here again.

We were scheduled to stay a week and stretched that to nine days. Sure there are other bigger and shiner places to stay in Rio. Closer to the beaches and the nightlife. But you wouldn't feel like you are staying in a neighborhood you've lived in your entire life. You are a short Uber ride to anything you need. And there are several places within walking distance to eat, drink and shop. It is the staff of Mama Shelter that makes you want to extend your stay. As an English speaker, they all knew enough English to answer your questions and help with directions or suggestions. They could not have been more accommodating. Right down to walking us out to the street holding umbrellas over our heads whilst hailing our Uber ride. If I make it back to Rio, I will surely be staying with Mama.

A very fun hotel with a nice patio, a large and super-stylish restaurant open on one side and a chic bar in the more residential neighborhood of Santa Teresa. Lots of interesting restaurants, bars and shops to walk to if you don't mind cobblestones and steep streets (we don't :) The rooms are very hip (photos are accurate) and beds are comfortable. Very dark hallways (lights are motion activated, but often just after you've passed) and even rooms right above the patio bar are quiet (nothing like 6 inch thick walls). Friendly, helpful staff and (at least during Carnival) free glitter gel is available at the front desk.

All I heard from friends and colleagues was to stay away from Santa Teresa...Its not safe. Blah blah blah... Well, that's not true. The area is beyond charming. Plenty of restaurants and music. Birds chirping and smiles. AND because of all of the fear-mongering, no Americans! What a treat. LOL! The Mama Shelter hotel was super cute. The property was well maintained, the f&b was great and the bartender was SO cool. The other staff were all super cool. We had a ball. They have a partnership with a nearby hotel where you can use the pool and spa. That said, Ipanema and Copacabana are at least a 20 min Uber ride so staying in Santa Teresa is a totally different Rio experience. We loved it and we REALLY loved the price.
