I didn’t put much thought into how profound of an experience this trip would be. I knew it would be life-changing, but not how much it would be. First, joining another community is always an exciting experience, even at a superficial level (i.e., typical tourist excursion). However, joining a new community where you spend 24/7, work, eat, sleep is another level of intimacy, and you don’t have the typical artificial tourist/customer dynamic. Add to that a new country, new language, new cuisine, new customs, and now you start to get the picture about how profound immersing yourself can be… if you let it. Joining this project as a short-term volunteer has been such a rich experience. The residents are so diverse, from age, race, region, experience, and economics. It has indeed been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had in a long time. Spending time living life with the residents here has been a unique and eye-opening experience. They have taught me so many things directly and indirectly. I am inspired to stay open more and more to the abundant experience available and to effect positive change through fellowship. Especially positive change in self!

Our son joined EC to take a break from the pressures of life and take advantage of the many opportunities they have to offer. It was a rewarding experience for him and for us. He learned a number of new things during his stay of over a year including bioconstruction, agro-forestry, organic farming, and working with livestock (cattle and chickens), etc. As a native English speaker, he was tasked with teaching English to those at the farm wanting to learn English. Additionally he was given a job to completely rebuild their website using his computer knowledge. The staff at EC welcomed him from the beginning and made him a part of their team. They recognized his skills and gave him the opportunity to utilize them as a way to build confidence and demonstrate responsibility. The program uses a “buddy” system to help the volunteers adjust and help fit in with the team while also learning their strengths and weaknesses of everyone and to identify each individual’s personal needs. He really enjoyed the hands-on approach used and getting his hands dirty. It often required labor intensive work but the volunteers are fed with primarily organically grown whole food from the farm and encouraged to refrain from unhealthy foods and beverages. Our son’s physical strength and overall health (including mental) improved immensely. He felt he was learning something new every day he was there and gained more self-confidence. After the initial acclamation and adjustment to the new environment and living conditions were made, he was challenged with increasingly more responsibilities. He was always supported and coached by the staff. Bart Bigen has a true desire to see that the volunteers improve their life skills as well as the physical skills. Goals and expectations were always clearly understood along with promoting a feeling of and need for teamwork. This included adhering to strict work and sleep schedules while also being given ample free time to pursue one’s own interest. EC is situated in a breathtaking mountain setting that offers many activities such as sightseeing, trail rides, swimming, etc during off hours, primarily on the weekends. The facility has people volunteering from all over the world. That also provides a setting to expand horizons and learn about the cultures from around the world. Our son’s time at EC coincided with the 2020-2021 lock-downs and its strict protocol recommended for Covid 19. EC took this very seriously and followed health guidelines for quarantine and testing. Unfortunately this greatly reduced the potential opportunities for group activity outside the facility and reduced the number of volunteers over restrictions and concern for international travel. This was unfortunate, but understandably out of the control of EC. Overall it was very positive experience for our son that we believe will benefit him for years to come.

If you like nature and hiking, EcoCaminhos is the place to be. It’s surrounded by beautiful quite mountains loaded with birds. It’s close to the National Park Pico Caledônia. Furthermore it is a working ecological farm where young people are finding inspiration and purpose. You will eat healthy and tasty food to have the energy to enjoy the biodiversity by foot. Highly recommended.

I came to Eco Caminhos as a part of my six-month sabbatical, as a short-term volunteer (12 weeks starting the end of January until the end of April 2020). What I was looking for at the farm was primarily to experience the calm life on the brazilian countryside while learning about organic farming and eco construction, seeing more of Brazil, and to improve my portuguese. The latter I could definitely achieve because during my time, there were mostly Brazilians staying at Eco Caminhos, part of them only speaking portuguese, and well - Brazilians like talking a lot! :) When you come without at least a basic level of portuguese, you have to be aware that it will not always be easy to communicate, and for me it was a bit overwhelming at times. Every week, there is a one-hour portuguese lesson, where you can practice the language even more and can come with grammar questions etc. It is not held by a professional teacher though, but by another resident of the farm. The area I liked most and I learned most about was organic farming under the principles of permaculture, and I’m already missing taking care of the vegetable garden, planting and seeing the plants thrive. In some ways I was very lucky being at the farm at the time I was: With the help of hired professionals in agroforestry and eco construction, a lot of progress was realized, and I had the opportunity to work in a lot of different areas. On the other hand, of course, the corona crisis came, which resulted in some safety restrictions. There were less activities than there might have been without the crisis, travelling was either not possible or not recommended, and we ended up spending a lot of time staying at the volunteer houses. As we were living very close together, a bit like a big commune, of course there were a few interpersonal tensions and difficulties. Nonetheless I do not regret staying in Eco Caminhos during that time. As Cardinot is quite secluded, we were relatively save and far away from corona hotspots, and furthermore we could still move freely around and explore the big farm area, enjoying nature. The mountains, forests and waterfalls form a little paradise on earth, with a surprisingly European climate, and I never got tired of spending my days outside. Summing up, I will always remember my stay, and although it was not perfect, I am grateful and happy for my experience and am looking forward to seeing how that little permaculture farm, striving to be self-sustaining, will develop in the future.

The nature is just stunning, the people will make you feel home. Perfect place to escape from the city and find some peace in these beautiful mountains. The staff can also offer you a lot to learn about agroforestry, biocontrusttion and sustainability in all its aspects, theorically but also practically.

EcoCaminhos is a place of growth. Even though it is a relatively young project, it allows you to learn and reflect everyday about yourself. This is, in my opinion, thanks to the beautiful nature that surrounds the place, the repetitive simple yet physical work that is usually done, and to the constant flux of people from around the world that allows you to see yourself in others and to learn from different perspectives. There is room for improvement, as in almost any other place in the world, yet when aligned with the core values of the project, this improvement can happen day by day resulting in an organizational growth, a communal growth and a personal growth. Good place to learn about yourself, test your patience, your commitment and disconnect from society’s excesses.

EcoCaminhos is a wonderful project in the middle of nature. I learned many things during the six months I stayed there. From living sustainable and in a community to learning lots about myself and connecting to nature. Incredible experience that I am so happy about. I will never forget the time I spent there nor the people that were part of it!

I had an amazing and very instructive stay at Eco Caminhos. I learned about agroforestry, bio-construction, perma-culture, composting and organic farming. I definitely loved the remote location...the living within nature, mountains...the views from the house are priceless! The fantastic thing is that I learned a lot helping in the projects (such as constructing cop walls, setting up a composting system, working in the organic garden) and also enjoyed a lot...starting slowing down, living the NOW, breathing fresh air, going on fantastic trails in the beautiful area close to Eco Caminhos and not to forget the home cooked food and bread and making new friends. It was an allover experience that I enjoyed a lot! Thanks for having me! All the best!!! I would always go back and stay longer <3

I spent three months at Eco Caminhos and it was an enriching and inspiring time filled with learning, laughter, the beauty of nature and really wonderful people. Lots of community meals, cooking with the organic ingredients from the garden and learning about sustainable methods of farming. Would recommend for anyone in search of expanding themselves and broadening their horizons. I left feeling warm and replenished.

We stayed at EcoCaminhos for 4 days, to escape the carnival craziness of Rio. We loved all of it. The hosts were so welcoming and were very generous with their hospitality. Bart had planned some excellent activities for kids. Our children are 2, 6, 8, and 10, and they all had a great time. The food was delicious, and in between meals, there was always coffee/tea, fruits, and other food available. We swam in waterfalls, climbed a mountain, rode horses, learned about cop structures, planted a tree, sang karaoke, and played outside as much as we could. I can fully recommend this amazing place! We will definately be back.
