I loved Itororo Ecolodge. It’s a stunningly beautiful place. The rooms are very comfortable and the food excellent. It is situated on 50 acres of forest that is being lovingly changed back to Atlantic rainforest from the pine and eucalyptus tree farm it once was, so staying here helps protect the relatively small amount of remaining Atlantic rainforest. The food was excellent. There are several bird feeders that are very actively visited. There were 5 different species of hummingbirds at the feeders seen within 15 minutes of my arrival. I stayed there as part of a birdwatching tour run by Andy Foster. Andy has a long and deep connection to the birds of the area, is extremely knowledgeable about them, and is great with people. During the 1 week trip I saw over 110 species just on the lodge grounds, and over 270 in the area. This area has many bird species found only there (are endemic).…
This place is amazing, the views are fabulous, the wildlife is immense, the lodge food is amazing. We stayed for 5 nights and wish it was longer. There are birds galore on the feeders and surrounding trees, you can sit and admire the views while hummingbirds whizz around you, there are nature trails to go off walking and we even spotted a potoo sitting on a stump. Exceptional stay I highly recommend staying here. They cater for all food types and nothing is any trouble. The beds are comfortable and showers have instant hot water. Absolutely amazing.
Loads of nature. feeders all around the site and you can watch from your room or eating your dinner.Food very good and lots of it!. Rainer and the team very friendly. Nothing to much trouble.Highly recommended
I spent five nights at Itororo lodge near Nova Friburga in Brazil . The owners Rainer and sister Bettina made me feel welcome from the moment i arrived .It was winter at the time of my stay and the nights were pretty chilly , i came completely unprepared clothing wise because i left UK in the middle of a heatwave , but Rainer leant me a warm jacket and Bettina a woolly hat . The room i stayed in was opposite the bird feeders ,so i had great views from dawn til dusk. The cold weather attracted more birds to the lodge surrounds so photography was a very relaxed affair. The bed was extremely comfortable and there was a nice log fire to take the chill off the room at night. I ate very very well , all three meals of the day plus afternoon cakes were very tasty . I think i must have doubled in size by the time i left , Bettina also made me some herbal teas ,with fresh herbs from the garden. I was the only person at the lodge for most of my visit , so had the run of the place ,and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Anyone interested in nature , especially birds and photography , must give the lodge a visit . If you come in the winter , bring warm clothes for the nightime . I would normally leave some photos with my review , but unfortunately ,my hardrive has crashed and i may have lost a lot of my images . I suppose that means i will have to re-visit the lodge , not all bad news then.…
We enjoyed (very much!) our 2 nights stay with our 3 year old son. We felt warmly welcomed, and taken care of with thoughtful organization. We walked all five trails leading from the lodge with our son, and appreciated this beautiful piece of rainforest that Rainer and Bettina are taking care of. We also enjoyed watching the birds from the terrace, taking our meals and wine (we were asked about our food restrictions beforehand), and bathing under the small waterfall. We appreciated the summer weather, kinder than in Rio thanks to the 1200 meters altitude. Thank you again, Rainer and Bettina, for this beautiful place and very pleasant time.
We were part of a small birding group that recently stayed at the rustic, yet comfortable Ecolodge Itororo near Nova Friburgo. The lodge is owned and operated by the brother-sister team Rainier & Bettina. Both are very personable and welcoming. Rainier is especially dedicated to the land and explained how he continues to eliminate invasive trees on the property, replacing them with natives. His efforts have paid off - the bird life on the lodge grounds is wonderful, with the well-stocked bird feeders an added treat, especially for photographers! During our visit we also had several day-long excursions to nearby areas, so lots of opportunity for Atlantic Rainforest endemics. Although it was summer, the area was experiencing an extended cold front and we were very happy to have a heavy blanket for sleeping and warm shower every day. Our meals were home cooked, good to very good, with an emphasis on vegetables. Our packed lunches however, needed more variety! The honor bar for drinks (wine, beer, and others) worked well and the WiFi did too although it did slow a bit in the evening during high usage. We enjoyed our time at Ecolodge Itororo and hope to get back at some point for another visit.…
It is one of those places you must stay. Good location and staff fantastic. Food was great every meal, made you want to have 2nds. Birdwatching was very good and the entire experience was fantastic. The owners have been taking the introduced trees out and are making more forest with the natural ones.
Just had nine nights at the Itororo, it was absolutely fantastic. Brilliant place to stay, hosts so friendly and welcoming, food totally superb, rooms excellent with great shower. Tea, coffee and cakes always waiting when we returned. I really cannot fault this place, visit and you will not be disappointed. Thank you for making it such an amazing stay.
We (2 couples) spent 2 weeks at the lodge and booked 5 days birding outside the lodge end of November , beginning of December . The lodge work in cooperation with Serra dos Tucanos Birding which is excellent for both of them. The hosts Rainer Dungs and his sister Bettina are outstanding people and very dedicated. They make you feel as special guests all the time. The food was excellent, fresh, tasty and plentiful. I have food allergies and Bettina always made sure I had my own meal when necessary. She is a great cook and makes wonderful cake in the afternoon. The rooms are clean, confortable and well maintained. WiFi worked fine most of the time. Bird feeders on the veranda are great for photographies especially tanagers, parakeets and hummingbirds. Feeders are always full of fruits. Trails are well marked, maintained and fairly easy to walk. For our 5 days outside the lodge we had a local guide, Cirilo Vieira, who was knowledgeable and very pleasant to be with. Overall we saw around 240 species of birds. The lodge also arranged our transportation from the airport (2.5 hours from Rio) which worked perfectly. The driver Serghino was excellent. The lodge is peaceful, great for birding and walking in the mountains. We highly recommend Itororo Lodge and Serra dos Tucanos. Thank you again to our great hosts Rainer and Bettina who made our stay memorable.…
We spent 14 days at Ecolodge Itororo late November 2019. We had also booked 6 days of birding with Andy Foster from Serra Dos Tucanos Birding Tours. Our hosts, Rainer and his sister Bettina, are great people, very thoughtful, they took really good care of us. The rooms are very functional and clean. Bettina is a great cook, the food was excellent. There are several trails on the lodge site and they are very well maintained. You will find that a walking stick can be very practical especially during the rainy season. Rainer and Bettina always make sure the feeders are replenished. Great to see the hummingbirds, the tanagers, the parakeets and many more birds. Our birding guide was Cirilo Vieira. We had a very pleasant time with Cirilo, he was knowledgeable of his birds. We did see almost all the birds we were expecting. We had a total of 245 birds for the lodge and our 5 days outside the lodge, but still in the Rio de Janeiro region. All in all, it's a great place to bird, relax and enjoy the scenary and the food ! …
