Property's Favorite Review
I stayed eight nights at Itororó on a birding trip with four friends. From the moment we met our hosts, Rainer and Bettina, we felt like we were staying with old family friends. They were genuinely interested in our activities of the day, and in anything they could do to they or their staff could do anything to enhance our stay. For example, on the third day, one of my mates asked if we could have some beans with dinner. Each night after that, in addition to the buffet dinner, a large bowl of beans was served to our table. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the food was good, and the birds fantastic.
We saw over 100 species of birds in the two days we spent birding trails in their extensive forest. As a bonus, when we took a break or ate outside on the deck with a view of the valley below and the mountains beyond, we also had great looks at the nearby bird feeders. Dining or having a glass of wine accompanied by parrots, hummingbirds, Brassy-breasted Tanagers (Google them!), and dozens of other species was the icing on the cake.
In short, if your idea of a vacation is to spend about fifteen minutes bouncing up a mountain road to arrive in a tropical paradise where the only things you hear outside the comfortable accommodations are the sounds of birds and animals, this is your spot!

We spent 14 days at Ecolodge Itororo late November 2019. We had also booked 6 days of birding with Andy Foster from Serra Dos Tucanos Birding Tours.
Our hosts, Rainer and his sister Bettina, are great people, very thoughtful, they took really good care of us. The rooms are very functional and clean. Bettina is a great cook, the food was excellent. There are several trails on the lodge site and they are very well maintained. You will find that a walking stick can be very practical especially during the rainy season. Rainer and Bettina always make sure the feeders are replenished. Great to see the hummingbirds, the tanagers, the parakeets and many more birds.
Our birding guide was Cirilo Vieira. We had a very pleasant time with Cirilo, he was knowledgeable of his birds. We did see almost all the birds we were expecting. We had a total of 245 birds for the lodge and our 5 days outside the lodge, but still in the Rio de Janeiro region.
All in all, it's a great place to bird, relax and enjoy the scenary and the food !

We (2 couples) spent 2 weeks at the lodge and booked 5 days birding outside the lodge end of November , beginning of December . The lodge work in cooperation with Serra dos Tucanos Birding which is excellent for both of them. The hosts Rainer Dungs and his sister Bettina are outstanding people and very dedicated. They make you feel as special guests all the time.
The food was excellent, fresh, tasty and plentiful. I have food allergies and Bettina always made sure I had my own meal when necessary. She is a great cook and makes wonderful cake in the afternoon.
The rooms are clean, confortable and well maintained. WiFi worked fine most of the time.
Bird feeders on the veranda are great for photographies especially tanagers, parakeets and hummingbirds. Feeders are always full of fruits.
Trails are well marked, maintained and fairly easy to walk.
For our 5 days outside the lodge we had a local guide, Cirilo Vieira, who was knowledgeable and very pleasant to be with. Overall we saw around 240 species of birds.
The lodge also arranged our transportation from the airport (2.5 hours from Rio) which worked perfectly. The driver Serghino was excellent.
The lodge is peaceful, great for birding and walking in the mountains.
We highly recommend Itororo Lodge and Serra dos Tucanos. Thank you again to our great hosts Rainer and Bettina who made our stay memorable.

This lodge is an absolute gem. Set in the most beautiful and peaceful location, amazing birding just on the grounds but easy to arrange local trips for even more birding opportunities. The lodge is spotless and everybody works so hard to make sure guests feel welcome, comfortable and attended to.
Andy made sure our itinerary for birding the week was smooth and no detail was missed. We didn’t have to worry about a thing and for three females traveling in a foreign country together, the small things matter. Our guide Cirilo was amazing as well. We will be back someday and recommend this lodge to everybody!

I spent five nights at Itororo lodge near Nova Friburga in Brazil . The owners Rainer and sister Bettina made me feel welcome from the moment i arrived .It was winter at the time of my stay and the nights were pretty chilly , i came completely unprepared clothing wise because i left UK in the middle of a heatwave , but Rainer leant me a warm jacket and Bettina a woolly hat . The room i stayed in was opposite the bird feeders ,so i had great views from dawn til dusk. The cold weather attracted more birds to the lodge surrounds so photography was a very relaxed affair. The bed was extremely comfortable and there was a nice log fire to take the chill off the room at night.
I ate very very well , all three meals of the day plus afternoon cakes were very tasty . I think i must have doubled in size by the time i left , Bettina also made me some herbal teas ,with fresh herbs from the garden. I was the only person at the lodge for most of my visit , so had the run of the place ,and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Anyone interested in nature , especially birds and photography , must give the lodge a visit . If you come in the winter , bring warm clothes for the nightime .
I would normally leave some photos with my review , but unfortunately ,my hardrive has crashed and i may have lost a lot of my images . I suppose that means i will have to re-visit the lodge , not all bad news then.

We enjoyed (very much!) our 2 nights stay with our 3 year old son. We felt warmly welcomed, and taken care of with thoughtful organization. We walked all five trails leading from the lodge with our son, and appreciated this beautiful piece of rainforest that Rainer and Bettina are taking care of. We also enjoyed watching the birds from the terrace, taking our meals and wine (we were asked about our food restrictions beforehand), and bathing under the small waterfall. We appreciated the summer weather, kinder than in Rio thanks to the 1200 meters altitude. Thank you again, Rainer and Bettina, for this beautiful place and very pleasant time.

We stayed at the deluxe bungalow with a view of a wonderful value filled with tropical birds. The deck in front of the room we had our meals had feeding points for the birds. Just sit down there for 2 hours and you have no idea what you can see fly by. It is amazing. The word amazing also goes for the staff of the lodge as well as the meals, all home-cooked. Totally great!

This place is the closest to perfect we had in 1,5 Months traveling in Brazil. High up in the mountains on a very small road lays Itororo ecolodge. Looking out over the mountainrange with lots of birds on the feeders filled with bananas and other fruits Rainer and his sister Bettina gave us a warm welcome.
Our room, close to the main area with the reception, looked out over the mountains and the feeders. Except for a little moldy smell in the room which is unevitable in that climate if you do not use airconditioning, it was very acceptable. The beds and the shower were fine.
Breakfast at 6 AM waking up with the sound of birds.
Drinking coffee while watching the most colorful birds you can imagine. And later a home cooked meal at 13 h and at 18:30h and you need nothing more to feel good. They have 4 different trails starting at the lodge which are especially nice to walk with a guide to point out all the different species of birds hiding in the jungle. If the natural pool fills up after the summer showers, it will be a nice refreshing splash after a nice hike. Let yourself emerse in nature and let nature and the irororo ecolodge people take away your daily stress.

Dear Maaike Thanks so much for your kind words and review! It was a real pleasure having you guys here. We are very glad you've liked it so much here. We are very sorry about the moldy smell in your suite. You should have told us right away, we would have offered you another suite. But thanks for letting us know, we will take care of it right away. Sorry that the natural pool didn't fill, it is the most extreme drought we have experienced in the last decades. Now the summer rains are arriving, soon our pool and waterfall will be a pleasure to us! We wish you and wonderful trip in Brazil! Best regards from the mountains and rainforest.

I recently spent eight days at Ecolodge Itororo on a Rockjumper birding trip. I highly recommend the lodge as a birding destinantion or a very nice nature getawy. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. The room we had was quite comfortable. The food was homemade and delicious, which is a big plus for a rainforest lodge. The owners are very environmentally aware and involved. In fact, more than 20 years ago they began cutting down the introduced, non-native trees and began planting native trees in a very large area. Now native plants have also moved in and it is true, native SE Brazil rainforest. Quite a accomplishment! Also, the birding guide, who lives on site, is superb. All in all, it simply is a wonderful place to visit.

Such a find for a phenomenal birding experience! Rainer has created a forest paradise with beautiful trails that has attracted dozens of hard to see species, many endemic. The lodge is charming and cozy, and Rainer and Bettina try to accommodate all requests, from dietary to room requests. For even casual nature enthusiasts, the feeder activity around the stunning deck and front of the lodge provide hours of entertainment. Gorgeous views and perfect temperatures complete the package. Ecolodge Itororo’s partnership with Serra dos Tucanos Birding Tours is the perfect marriage to accomplish a tailored experience. My friends and I loved our week at the lodge.
