#2 of 404 Specialty lodging in Salvador
In the heart of Pelourinho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are the three houses that make up the Galeria 13 experience: one for social travellers, one for those seeking a quieter stay, and TripAdvisor’s top rated Bar Zulu in between them. This unique blend of moods, sights and flavours has rendered us the Best Hostel in Brazil award as voted by HostelWorld members, and a place in Lonely Planet’s finicky section Our Pick along with some flattering words from the traveller’s holy book.No wonder: by staying with us you get tons of freebies, including our obscenely big breakfast until midday, caipirinha happy hour, swimming pool, and more.

I didn’t stay here but my friends did. I wasn’t allowed in the hostel to socialize with them during a happy hour. Not only this I told them I didn’t want a drink or anything else but could I stay and chat with my friends? They did not agree and told me to leave. How ridiculous? This is NOT the vibe of a hostel and just gives off negative vibes. Sorry guys but I will be warning against your hostel to every traveler I meet. Nasty people, nasty rules, nasty vibe.

.  Hostel galeria 13 has a great garden & pool area, add  in our well stocked bar and many  guests end up  hanging  around and sometimes forget to get out and investigate  . None guests are welcome  to come too by until 2300 at night , some end up realising what they are missing and change hostels.  Our guets on average probably pay a little more than other hostels but this is because they have the great Breakfast till 1200 the use of a pool and of course the famous hour of free Caipirinhas . So it would be a little annoying  if where you sttay was always invaded by non guests when it was YOUR free hour.   We certainly have no problem in creating THE VIBE of a hostel as we are always full in the high season . Our opinion is that it would not be fair to charge are guests more and then allow other people to visit  during their free hour . The Happy hour is Our thank you for our loyal  guests . The hostel is maxed out and we just cant maintain our standards. The service would be poor and it would look like we were just after more money from paying non guests. Our rules come to stand because of past experiences .Those non guests who say they dont want to drink the caipirinhas end up taking them anyway ,this is just added work for our staff to control. We just ask non guests to leave from 1700 till 1830 so that the expereince is for our customers. I see this visitor has a lot of opinions on trip advisor

It has a free caipirinha happy hour at 5:15 every day. The travelers meet there, meet each other and in many cases spend the evening in one or more groups. English is the common language. The staff is friendly and excellent. Breakfast until noon is perfect for this late night town.

This hostel might be one of the best hostel in salvador city center : amazing breakfast, nice location, nice rooms and facilities, nice people at reception EXCEPT that we had a bit trouble with the owner. I think he prefers his dogs to his guests. We arrived early in the morning we not so much sleep so we asked for a nap in an empty chill room. On purpose or not : he put his barking dog right next to us, made us pay the breakfast although we were not taking one the day after, made no effort to find us a room before 2pm and barely looked at us in the eyes while talking. Hostel remains very nice, pity that this experience made it less pleasant

Maybe, maybe not the best hostel, but we certainly are a very busy hostel. If we are full how can we check in guests before our stated check in time ? Thats just impossible . Its 1400 hours as we have 10 rooms to clean on most days and only then do we want to take people to a CLEAN room. If you arrive at 0600(even though you know its 1400 check in) you will be able to hang out and are OFFERED a paid breakfast (its free the next day). You are occupying our common areas for 8 hours before the check in at no charge. You can even have a shower . It would actually have been nice and HONEST for the guests to state the fact they were actually checked in at around 1200 which is very uncommon. Spartan is our 11 year old hostel dog ,who now can not walk anymore so requires extra supervision from me his dad yes he requests a lot (barks more) when he wants water, wants something to eat, have a pee or sees a cute girl he wants to talk to. I think he deserves to be aroud still as he has made lots of guests enjoy their Galeria 13 experience even more and also chased away a few not wanted people at the gate.I think most people can appreciate that MOST people.

This place is exceptional and the atmosphere is the best I have ever experienced in a hostel. The location is perfect, in a nice street in the middle of the old town. A great place to explore Salvador from. Paulo, the owner has everything set-up perfectly. Stong (for Brazil) WiFi, great breakfasts lasting all morning, a small pool for an afternoon cooldown and the secret sauce is the happy hour of free Caipirinha's, which brings everyone in the hostel together, making plans for the evening, the next day and beyond. Most guests are speaking English as a common language, I could not recommend this place highly enough.

Hostel and rooms was overall great. The manager needs to cheer up a bit and remember that being friendly and helpful at all times is part of the service. Remember that reviewing is anonymous so coming at people over dinner is not on. Signed Mr F
