In the heart of Pelourinho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are the three houses that make up the Galeria 13 experience: one for social travellers, one for those seeking a quieter stay, and TripAdvisor’s top rated Bar Zulu in between them. This unique blend of moods, sights and flavours has rendered us the Best Hostel in Brazil award as voted by HostelWorld members, and a place in Lonely Planet’s finicky section Our Pick along with some flattering words from the traveller’s holy book.No wonder: by staying with us you get tons of freebies, including our obscenely big breakfast until midday, caipirinha happy hour, swimming pool, and more.

It has a free caipirinha happy hour at 5:15 every day. The travelers meet there, meet each other and in many cases spend the evening in one or more groups. English is the common language.
The staff is friendly and excellent. Breakfast until noon is perfect for this late night town.

This was my first time travelling alone, and Paulo did everything he could to make me feel at home. He is a natural born host, always taking care of everybody, making sure we connect and meet other guests so our stay is even more memorable.
Rooms are good, breakfast is great, and the caipirinha happy hour is even better.
Thank you Paulo (and Vanda while we're at it) for everything!

Comfortable big beds, generous happy hour, great breakfast, friendly staff and swimming pool!
Wish we could have stayed longer, this place has everything you need! Great location and plenty of information about all the sites in the area.

Long story short,
Almost no one speaks English in this town, so I went to the hostel to ask for some basic information about plane tickets. Was immediately told off from the owner (or a guy who acts like he owns the place) and to be honest I’m quite happy I didn’t book a room there. Obviously can’t say much about the rooms, but the service level is disgraceful and appalling.

Response from Paulo George Denning Martinho, Proprietário at Hostel Galeria 13

After so long closed it was great to get back into action . The summer months of January and February were very encouraging. We were able to look after OUR guests and provide them our great service. Our reception staff are very experienced and we often get mails and whatts app messages requesting info. We are happy to help even though we know the people wont stay . When we do get a visit requesting info we some times even conquer them and they decide to move over . We indeed had TWO visits from these guys once at Breakfast and then at check out time , 2 crazy times The receptionist tried to help but on the 2nd visit i indeed had to inform her that we needed to take care of our guests first . Maybe they could come back later when it was quiet.

I didn’t stay here but my friends did. I wasn’t allowed in the hostel to socialize with them during a happy hour. Not only this I told them I didn’t want a drink or anything else but could I stay and chat with my friends? They did not agree and told me to leave.
How ridiculous? This is NOT the vibe of a hostel and just gives off negative vibes.
Sorry guys but I will be warning against your hostel to every traveler I meet. Nasty people, nasty rules, nasty vibe.

. Hostel galeria 13 has a great garden & pool area, add in our well stocked bar and many guests end up hanging around and sometimes forget to get out and investigate . None guests are welcome to come too by until 2300 at night , some end up realising what they are missing and change hostels. Our guets on average probably pay a little more than other hostels but this is because they have the great Breakfast till 1200 the use of a pool and of course the famous hour of free Caipirinhas . So it would be a little annoying if where you sttay was always invaded by non guests when it was YOUR free hour. We certainly have no problem in creating THE VIBE of a hostel as we are always full in the high season . Our opinion is that it would not be fair to charge are guests more and then allow other people to visit during their free hour . The Happy hour is Our thank you for our loyal guests . The hostel is maxed out and we just cant maintain our standards. The service would be poor and it would look like we were just after more money from paying non guests. Our rules come to stand because of past experiences .Those non guests who say they dont want to drink the caipirinhas end up taking them anyway ,this is just added work for our staff to control. We just ask non guests to leave from 1700 till 1830 so that the expereince is for our customers. I see this visitor has a lot of opinions on trip advisor

Normally: I would never stay in a place where you are not allowed to use the kitchen. Having said this, I had too many positive experiences at the Galleria 13 that all of this completely makes up for this one single disadvantage. First of all, and most importantly, all staff are very serviceminded, attentive, happy, smiling and helpful. No matter what stupid inquiries we came with, we were always met with a positive attitude. The breakfast runs from 8-12 and they even let you have breakfast on the day you check in, just as well as the free caipirinhas are also offered to you on the day you check out. (Ex. if you have a late flight/bus and need to kill a little time:) We also took a shower in the evening after checking out, and all these are things that many other hostels/hotels would either charge you for or not offer at all. ANOTHER really convenient thing is that we could store our big backpacks here when we went to Chapada Diamantina (nature park, also really, really recommended)
The staff clean the rooms everyday and all in all you get a lot of all round value for the cheap price you pay. There is always a good vibe, a welcoming atmosphere and it really shows that the management has solid experience from the service business, while simultaneously accomplishing to make the place feel relaxed and homely. I recommend this place to everyone whether traveling alone or with friends, and when in Salvador I do not think there would be a more fun, social or better place to stay:)

Hi, to whoever's listening, this is the first time I've been bothered to write a review, as I had such an awful experience. Please don't stay here there's a good hostel called Acai which will be a much much better option.
Reason being, they put us in a room in a different building round the corner with no other guests, no security, no facilities, to get in you had to get a key from the restaurant opposite every night. If you're travelling on your own, make sure you're not in this building (they won't tell you when you book unless you ask)
When we tried to move into the actual hostel, which was only a Third full, they wanted to charge us for both rooms, after we had decided that we didn't want to stay there as it didn't seem safe, we told them to take the deposit and give the rest of our money back, but they refused and kept our money. Eventually after three hours of negotiating and revealing that we work for the same company as lonely planet, they moved our rooms and we paid the normal price. We were so angry, it totally ruined our stay.
Not only that, the owner's the moodiest man in Salvador, the room window didn't shut which meant loads of Mosquitos and it was really hot and the beds were dirty, the shower was tiny and cold and the wifi was non-existent.
Don't do it!!
The highlights were the staff aside from the owner, who were lovely and breakfast was nice.

Acai is indeed a great hostel ,probably helped by the fact he lived in ours for a year, but heh you booked a double and they dont have doubles. You actually booked the wrong day so we kindly saved the last of our 7 doubles ) for you( so we were certianly not only a 3rd full otherwise we would have moved you to another room dont you think?) the room was indeed in our secound house (the dog house) which is mentioned on the site you booked on , When you were unhappy with this option and wished to change to a dorm to be with you freind , we said that you would have to pay for this room that had been saved just for you ,so we suggested she stayed in your room as it could sleep three ,you still did not like this option either and wanted to cancel all of your 3 days. You were informed of our stated cancelation policy you then paid and were leaving correct?. When i found out you would prefer to pay and leave i told Alberto to give you your money back .He then informed me you were going to rebook and you did .WHY?? IF you indeed do work for the lonley planet its a very sad manner of negotiating for something and am sure would not be very well appreciated by the owners of that company . If i had known about this" IMPORTANT "fact it would not have changed how we apply our cancelation policy which is for ALL CUSTOMERS ,even the Queen ,god bless her soul, it seems to suggest you believe 2 things . 1/you are more important than other guests 2/if you dont get want you want you are going to hurt us somehow so both show an extremly mature manner of behaviour. The dog house does have security as only we open the main door so control all visitors ,it has a better camera sytem than the police and thats why quite often im asked for images of the street occurences. Regards myself ,yes im famous for caring for my spot and staff but you did not actually have anything more to do with me than walk past me at breakfast did you?? so you really can not have your own opinion

Fantastic hostel in the heart of the Pelourinho. Generous breakfasts, small pool to cool off in, friendly helpful staff, lots of advice for getting the best out of Salvador, highly recommended. Lively main hostel, plus quieter lodgings around the corner in a beautifully restored colonial house. Complimentary caipirinhas were also much appreciated.

Hostel Galeria 13 would be much better without the owner, Paulo. We found him rude, easily offended, and unhelpful. We felt uncomfortable asking him questions, both because of his manner but also because he frequently gave us the wrong answer! For example, we wanted to do the hop-on hop-off bus in Salvador, but when we asked for help to catch it he told us not to do it because it was expensive-75 reais-and just generally seemed to look down on us for wanting to do something so ´touristy.´ When we figured out how to catch it ourselves, we found it was only 40 reais and a great way to see the outskirts of the city in a day. Other than Paulo, the staff (especially Pedro!) were lovely.

All the staff are very helpful and friendly. They have a very useful guide book for Salavdor that Paulo wrote - makes it very easy to plan your days.
The only difficulty was paying a deposit before arriving at the hostel - they only take cash and Paypal, no credit card. But this turned out to be easier than we thought. If you have an international card, it pretty easy to go to a Caxia ATM and deposit the money. Takes about 10minutes at the machines at the bank.
