#1 of 2 B&Bs / Inns in Altoona
The Otter Creek Inn is a three-story English Tudor building with a country-Victorian decor nestled on a wooded hill high above the Otter Creek. The facility has operated as a bed and breakfast continuously since 1987. There are six guestrooms, each with its own restroom, double whirlpool, and television. Many of the guest rooms also have a gas fireplace and mini-frig. Breakfast is menu style and breakfast served to your room door is a favorite choice. The Inn is conveniently located near many restaurants and shopping areas and the bike path crosses in front of the Inn connecting you with nearly fifty miles of bike trails.

We booked this inn for a romantic retreat after reading so many five star rave reviews. But from the beginning, we were disappointed. First, due to covid and no in-person registration, the place said they would contact us on the day we were to check in to let us know the procedures. We were traveling from several hours away, planning to check in at 3:00, and by 2:30 we had heard nothing. I finally called, and 5 minutes later got a text from them telling us where to find the key, etc. That didn't seem very timely to me, caused us some concern about the veracity of our registrations. When we entered the room, we were hit with a rather stale, old house smell, a little off-putting but we got used to it pretty quickly. Some of the rugs had quite noticeable stains, something I think should have been corrected as they were throw rugs. The bathroom was small with a small shower and toilet. The sink was a low, small one outside the bathroom with rather low lighting. There was a comfortable bed, and two older pink chairs set in front of a gas fireplace, that when turned on was pretty noisy. We found the chairs comfortable, but there were no larger tables anywhere to put anything on, and no closet. The temperature in the room was very warm, and no way we saw to turn it down, so we really couldn't use the fireplace much as it just heated the room up way more. The hosts provide a happy hour sort of time where they allow guests to help themselves to shots of whiskey, soda, and wine in carafes. This was very nice, but it was advertised on the website that there would be "cakes and cookies", etc. , which there were not. In addition, the great room where this was held had very limited seating: only one loveseat with some footstools, and a small table with four chairs around it. The room was large enough to have had some comfy chairs next to the fireplace, some more over by the windows. As it was, there was simply not enough seating for everyone who wanted to sit and chat or enjoy the drinks. So we were disappointed, but not ready to totally call this trip a bust. We settled in to our bed but the traffic outside our windows (we were on the side of the house next to the highway) was quite loud, as was the noise between the walls from other rooms. We were looking forward to the breakfast in the morning, which promised homemade ("made your way") eggs benedict, eggs souffle, etc. These were to be served with "Wisconsin cheese and seasonal fruit." I was really looking forward to that portion of the breakfast but alas, it was nowhere to be found. When I questioned this (again, texting to the only number they provided for contact), I was told that they stopped doing this because people were wasting the food and sending it back untouched! I guess the topper of the whole experience was when we decided to pack it up and leave and had our one and only contact with a live person, the cook who made our breakfast, and she wasn't wearing a mask. We asked her why she wasn't wearing one (very nicely and politely), and she said she didn't have to because she was a very clean person. So, we left! I would not recommend this place unless they make some changes. First, update their website so it reflects the reality of staying there. Make sure their employees are following covid safe guidelines. Replace and refresh the furnishings. And be a little more communicative so people actually feel welcome and take care of! Instead, I'd stay at the Holiday Inn Express nearby which, while lacking the ambience of the Otter Creek inn, definitely gets five stars for cleanliness, service and affordability. At the HIE they went out of their way to provide us with a good experience!

Room Tip: Room 2 advertised as on the main floor, but there were many stairs to climb just to enter the house.

Pros: Room One was large and nice. Large bathroom with jacuzzi. Perfect place to spend a cold/rainy October evening. Cons: The person delivered our breakfast came into our room and was not wearing a mask. I was shocked that today they would not be wearing a mask. I wonder if a mask was worn in the preparation. They asked when we made reservations if we were celebrating anything special. We told them our anniversary. Nothing was mentioned about our celebration. They have a place for wine and cocktails. The red wine was sitting in ice. The cute little gazebo had a small fire pit which was not working. Traffic from the main road is loud when sitting outside. Did not hear any traffic when indoors. They said they would have treats (even in the note about Covid) but no treats. The food and room was nice. The service was lacking.

I stayed 2 years ago and it was great. I stayed for my husband's birthday and our anniversary a couple days ago. There is wine to pour, sodas, beer in the fridge. The hard liquor shot bottles are complimentary. 4 out of 6 bottles were empty. Not sure when the replace. Whiskey was remaining. There are games to play, only 1 loveseat and 4 chairs/table in the living room to sit. There is a firepit outside. Upon arrival I asked for smore making chocolate bars, since the candy jar was almost empty. The other smore supplies were there. Lisa added bars for us after asking. I also asked for propane for the fire, since the bottle was empty. Lisa replaced the propane for us when requested. There were no evening appetizers like last visit. I assume because of Covid. There was NO acknowledgement of our celebration. If you want anything acknowledged or to be special, make sure you order those extras online yourself. I assume they leave in your room. The bedroom mattress REALLY needs to replacing. VERY indented. The jacuzzi was very noisy but fits 2 adults. The breakfast eggs benedit was delicious. The potatoes were not warm. The 866- phone number on ottercreekinn.com did NOT work 4 times I tried. 715-577-1816 is the number that we were texted before we arrived.

Otter Creek Inn is such a beautiful place. Everything was very spacious and tastefully decorated. Our room was extremely comfortable and we were made to feel very much at home. There were drinks available in the afternoon/evening, supplies for making our own s’mores in the beautiful courtyard. Breakfasts were made to order and quite delicious. A truly enjoyable experience.

The single room was a perfect room! The amenities seemed endless from the drinks, Alexa powered music, games, Smores, and more. The details in the common space, the room, and the outdoors spaces was so on point! This environment provided just what I needed as I was looking for to recharge, refuel and relax! Bed was comfy, spa bath was great (water never went cold in there or the shower), and there was a nice variety to the food and beverages.
