I stayed at the Marriott Renaissance Austin Hotel on Arboretum Blvd in December 2020. The hotel appears to be struggling to stay in business, and the experience for me was not good. There were three positives that stood out. One is the front desk staff were professional and very nice. Two is the food was very good in their restaurant. Three is the grounds behind the hotel are very nice to walk, especially if you are traveling with a dog, and they are easy to access through an elevator in back of hotel. There were multiple problems with the stay. The first was when I used my Marriott upgrade vouchers to get a suite. The hotel emailed me the day before letting me know they did not have an upgrade available. I logged in anonymously and saw multiple suites still available, so I had to call Marriott and ask them to contact the hotel and require them to honor Marriott commitments to loyal customers. The suite was fine, but the hotel clearly is in need of being updated (room needs new carpet, paint, new counter tops, etc.). The hotel is designed with a large inside open atrium similar to an Embassy Suites. This proved to be a challenge for my eighth floor room since heat rises because we could never get the room cool, and this was on days with temps ranging from 40 to 75 F (avoid this hotel in the summer!). The food in the restaurant was good, so they have a good cook on staff, but the wait staff are clearly not trained. They got our order wrong one time, and another time we gave up and went to the room after it was clear they forget to place our order after waiting for quite some time. They knew our room number, so we were rudely surprised when they knocked on our door to offer a free meal as an apology, and we had the do-not-disturb sign on the door. When I booked the hotel I saw there was a $50 pet fee, but I must have missed the fine print. When I checked out I discovered they charge this $50 pet fee per night. I asked the front desk if I stayed for a week would they charge me a $350 pet fee, and she said yes! The occupancy at this hotel was very low, and I can now see why this was the case. I assume they must be struggling to stay open, so they are resorting to unethical measures by trying to avoid upgrades, tricking people into paying multiple nights for pet fees, and hiring staff that are not trained properly. I hope this is just a reflection on the owners and management of this hotel and not a growing problem across multiple Marriott properties.

We had our wedding at the hotel last weekend. It is a very beautiful venue. I give maximum stars for the food, venue and location. We treated our guests to appetizers, baby gem salad with sweet jalapeño dressing, and pecan crusted chicken. Our guests raved about the tasty dinner. The event planner was also very helpful. However, the billing process is very questionable. I give 0 stars to this. The first time we charged our card, for first installment payment, using the link that the hotel provided, we were immediately hit by numerous fraudulent charges. Thankfully, the credit card company noticed and canceled our card. Not sure whether the hotel payment website is not secure or something suspicious happened within their system. The next questionable transaction was our final bill. Our 2nd to 3rd deposit payments went smoothly without an issue. The amount was already agreed upon and all was good. The problem was with the final bill. The hotel never sent us a receipt and went ahead and charged our credit card without any notification. We saw the charge and asked for the itemized bill because we wanted to know what this charge consisted of. Lo and behold! we had been charged for two bartenders instead of one, and also for 137 drinks instead of our total guests of 86. We strictly requested for one drink ticket per person but the hotel carelessly put extra items on our bill. I would advise anybody using this venue for events to be vigilant about their credit card charges, and the number of guests they have at the event versus what is on bill. Hopefully, we will get our refund without any problems.

We held a business meeting here just a few days ago and be forewarned that there is no one at this property who can help you with your computer or internet if you need help. My understanding is that this hotel eliminated their entire AV department due to Covid-19 and yet they’re still trying to host meetings. That’s like going to a hospital with no doctors and having a janitor suture you closed. The gentleman who helped me trying to connect my laptop to their projector could not figure out what cable I needed. I asked him if he could get someone from AV to assist and his response was “we no longer have an event technology department “. I wanted to leave right then and there. I couldn’t even present from the podium onstage so I presented FROM THE FLOOR!! The projector was blurry, not properly shining on the screen and washed out. No one knows how to turn off lights. My microphone didn’t work. It dropped out constantly and couldn’t be heard. Every time they made it louder a horrible noise was made. They even said “sorry we don’t know what to do” and left. I would’ve rather sent out an email to my attendees to meet via Zoom than pay anything to a hotel with inept employees. *The GM should be reprimanded for allowing business decisions like this to occur!! You cannot successfully market yourself as a “convention hotel” if you do not have access to an adequate audio-visual staff. Period! Food was bland. Did you freeze the pre-cooked food that you had back when you closed and thaw/serve it too? Do you actually have anyone who knows what they’re doing?? The coffee shop Austin bites (I believe) was closed early too.

After staying at the hotel over the weekend, I noticed on my bill that there was a charge from the bar that I did not make as I do not drink and did not eat anything at the property. I called the hotel who opened a "ticket". Two days later, they sent me a receipt showing a drink charge, however there was no indication that it was me, via a signature or written name, nor my room number. I sent an email back asking for this to be removed from my bill and to be refunded, however I was ignored. Another two days later, I called the hotel again but was forwarded this time to Bonvoy Member Services who have no ability to authorize refunds. They offered to open up another ticket, but I declined and called American Express who promptly refunded me my money. Do yourself a favor and stay at the Westin in the Domain instead.
