Twenty year supporter of Marriott hotels here and this past Monday I was excited for my first post-pandemic hotel stay at the JW Marriott. Wow, was I wrong! Got into Austin later than expected, checking in around 8pm. Ended up working late into the night / early morning. Got a horrible night’s sleep, having been booked in a “connecting room” with a neighbor who woke me up from his party screaming at 6am. As I didn’t want to be disturbed in the morning, I had put my “do not disturb” hanger on the door the night before. Unfortunately at 10am housekeeping started banging on the door. I told them I was still sleeping and they went away. Twenty minutes later they came back knocking again. At this point I was so frustrated, I called the front desk asking for the General Manager. I left a lengthy voicemail on his phone explaining the situation and to this day have heard nothing. Generally I prefer Marriott hotels for their sensibility and respect for my business over the years. However, having worked in Austin many times, this hotel will no longer be on my or my company’s list. Going forward we will be staying with the Fairmont or Driskill.

In a nutshell, the room was beautiful and the pool is great, but the service is severely lacking and borders on outright rudeness. I am an Ambassador Elite member and booked a birthday trip via my Ambassador for a couple of nights. I paid via cash vs points and reserved a room on a high floor. I was informed at check in that I had been "upgraded" - to a room on a high floor. I pointed out that this was not an upgrade, as it was the same room I had reserved. As an Elite member, I am entitled to a complimentary suite upgrade if they are available. I was told that they did in fact have suites available for my stay and I requested to be upgraded. Not 5 minutes after arriving to my room, I got a call from the front desk, telling me that they would be charging me an additional $250/night for my suite upgrade. I informed them that as an Elite member, this is a benefit to which I am entitled and if they insisted on charging me for this, I would check out and leave immediately. I contacted my Ambassador and they were able to contact the hotel and sort everything out for me. That treatment from the hotel staff left a bad taste in my mouth. To obtain this status, you have to stay 100 nights AND spend over $20k in their hotels. This treatment is unacceptable. Before staying at this hotel, you should be aware that while the rates remain the same and the hotel continues to operate at capacity, the amenities are greatly reduced. There is no executive lounge, one restaurant is closed, the menus and hours at other on-site restaurants are reduced, there is no 24 hour In-room Dining and housekeeping is minimal. I contacted the front desk the second day of our stay to request that housekeeping refresh our room while we were away and was told that if I wanted housekeeping to service my room, it should have been requested at least 24 hours in advance. Nowhere on their app does it say anything about that. We also made 3 different calls to request ice so we could chill a bottle of champagne to enjoy before dinner and the ice was never delivered. I paid to reserve a pool cabana for one afternoon. The cabana and pool were absolutely beautiful, but we went an hour and a half without being able to locate our server to order food or drinks. The JW Marriott styles itself as a luxury, high-end brand. The service at this point is anything but that. I realize that we are in unusual times but if you cannot meet beyond the most basic needs of your guests, don't operate at capacity and don't pretend to be an elite property. I booked this trip hoping for a couple of days of luxury and pampering for my birthday. If I wanted Courtyard service, I could have saved myself a lot of money and booked there instead. I am very disappointed.

Beautiful property. I visited early May and was blown away by how welcoming the staff was upon arrival. Tenzin (spelling?) had my keys ready in no time and my door was even opened by the valet (Getty) when my uber arrived! The room was clean and had a great view of the city. The bar and restaurant were great but make sure you get there early as it fills up fast (as most great dining spots do). I highly suggest this as your destination when in Austin as its walking distance to everything!

Unless you are in college, or have a burning desire to relive your college fraternity/sorority days, avoid this hotel at all costs on a weekend. My wife and I arrived on a Thursday afternoon and left Monday morning. Our first impression was that this was a typical JW property, meaning it was high end and deserving of Marriott's designation as one of their premium brands. Unfortunately, from Friday afternoon until Sunday evening it was like living in a college dormitory. Among the many inconveniences we encountered was the fact that using the hotel pool was next to impossible. The pool itself, as well as the area around it, are woefully undersized for a property that serves this many guests. At one point Saturday afternoon, there was a lengthy line just to get to the pool area. The hotel staff seemed overwhelmed and actually called for hotel security to come keep order. Once in the pool area, using the pool was out of the question as it was filled with dozens of people just standing in the water and socializing. Anyone actually being able to swim was simply not possible. I have been a Marriott fan and frequent guest for many years and have spent hundreds of nights in Marriott properties around the world. This was, possibly, my worst experience at one ever. If I am ever in Austin again on a weekend, I will be sure to stay somewhere else.
