Have you ever read of a place, building, or country that made you say, “I wish I could go there.” I did after reading an article about The Willcox in the October, 2021 issue of Bliss Victoria magazine. At the time of that reading, I temporarily resided in North Charleston. When I realized that The Willcox was in Aiken, South Carolina, I made all the necessary arrangements to pamper myself for a weekend. After arriving in the quaint town with an equestrian history, I felt as though I stepped into the magazine’s pages. A beautiful wedding party had filled a large portion of the lobby, but the desk clerk made me fill welcome as she handed me the brass key (Yes, a real key!) that would open the door to my room. Everything you could imagine was there when I opened the door; a four-poster bed, a loveseat, coffee table with chairs in front of a non-working fireplace. A desk that faced a window and a beautiful bathroom with a sunken tub and outstretched tray that held all bath necessities as well as a separate full, spacious shower. In the evening, my bed was turned down with chocolates placed on the pillow and chilled, fresh lemon infused water in a pitcher that sat on the nightstand. They even filled the ice bucket! Relaxing music filled the air, encouraging you to shake off any possible stress. The staff in the dining area were pleasant and very much on point in making sure I had a wonderful experience. From the appetizer, entrée to the finishing touch of desert, the meal was a memorable one. I had everything I could ever want to enjoy a much-needed pampering experience. I was just like a mischievous child as I floated in the deep tub and later, wrapped myself into the plush bathrobe that hung in the closet. When I could no longer keep my eyes open, I fell into the center of the bed and drifted off to sleep. Overall: The building, grounds and lobby of The Willcox were as the photographs depicted. If you have time, check out the shops and boutiques in the nearby business area. I truly enjoyed picking up a few gifts while speaking to the owners or employees. After a great lunch, I reluctantly had to return to the real world but took some wonderful memories with me.

Love the outdoor patio by the pool. Very relaxing. The interior lobby near the bar takes you back in time and sets the tone for a pleasant evening. Something was off with the service as the oyster recommendation was strong, yet the oysters were not fresh and clearly past their prime. Shame on me for eating oysters in a non-R month. Staff also pushed the espresso gelato, but passed. Food/entree/apps were good, but I suppose the biggest opportunity was with the staff and being a bit more considerate and aware to take the lobby ambiance and carry that forward to the pool/patio dining experience.

My friends and I rented the Pool Cottage that is offsite but affiliated with The Willcox. It was a charming, older residence that was perfect for our girls’ birthday weekend. We especially appreciated the pool on the property and the personal on-call concierge, Jennifer. We’d definitely stay here again!

The Willcox provides a warm, yet elegant Southern experience. This was my third time here and I can’t imagine staying elsewhere. The wood paneled grand lounge with two fireplaces is so inviting and comfortable that one could stay for hours, reading, talking, or enjoying food or beverages. Cocktails are excellent. Live music is played on Thursdays and another night. We stayed in the lovely second floor Churchill suite. We enjoyed its well appointed period authentic rooms and its tree-shaded balcony at the quieter east end of the hotel. We felt like we were sleeping on clouds, the bed and linens were so comfortable. Staff is friendly, courteous, and has a “Can do” approach to any challenges. Other hotels may be updated in a contemporary style, but we sought the special experience that we have only found at The Willcox. We can’t wait to return.

We were so excited to finally be able to visit the Wilcox but sadly my expectations were not met. The check-in was smooth but I found that they did not go above and beyond. We tried to have them book a dinner and she said the next person coming in would get back to me and they never did. We had a junior suite and although it was spacious it clearly needed some repairs. Part of the bathroom faucet was missing, the dresser was damaged/chipped and there was some ceiling patching that needed to be done. I just expected the room to be pristine. The restaurant was okay nothing to write home about. I ordered avocado toast one morning and it came out completely brown. It was hard to eat. My biggest disappointment was making an appt. at the Spa and receiving a confirmation and then later saying it was for a different day. I had all the previous emails so the mistake was on their end. To their defense they did try and make it up by trying to book another option on the day of checkout. But this did not fit into our travel plans and they kept on trying to book a massage which I told them I could not do. The best part of the whole experience was John, the bartender. We enjoyed chatting with him each evening and the level of service was top notch. The Wilcox needs to follow his example moving forward. The town was very quaint and we had a nice time walking, shopping and trying some of the restaurants.

Incredibly slow service Kids were hungry and getting cranky. Average to poor food that was over priced considering portion size and quality. Stale rolls Worst ceasar salad ever—5 leaves of bitter lettuce with a tasteless dressing and cold poached egg. Never coming back here

Carole Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, it is only from dedicated people like you that we can learn and grow as a business, I have 2 young boys so I can relate to hungry cranky kids. From reviewing your guest check on the day, it looks like one guest ordered a soup to start this could explain why the entrees took a little longer to come out, as the server would wait until the soup was consumed. Our Caesar salad is served with sweet gem lettuce, bacon, croutons, white anchovies, shaved parmesan, and a soft-boiled egg. We bake our rolls throughout the day so that they are hot, fresh, and ready to go. We pride ourselves on serving top quality local ingredients and I apologize you did not enjoy your experience, if you choose to dine with us again, please reach out to me so I may take care of it personally. The staff is most accommodating. Only downside we found was the TV. It refused to turn on a few times and the provider has a really crappy menu. Also, they apparently discontinued HBO subscription. To the plus in this vein, a DVD player is in the room. One visit to red box, we're happy. To the positive, this is 5 star review after all. Room is very nice, 2X/day room service. The on site restaurant is excellent. Cannot express how happy we are with food and the service - both excellent. Unlike some higher end establishments, the portions are most adequate to more than adequate. The included breakfast is very good, The site is very close to the downtown shopping / restaurant area. Word of caution, as per always - NEVER TRUST GPS. especially with all the one way streets - IT WILL SCREW YOU EACH AND EVERY TIME. Get a map (for you young folks - that is a folded piece of paper that has a depiction of the streets). Don't wait until you hit the property, the poor girl we asked to map out a restaurant not 2 miles from the property had us in completely the wrong direction. Then, of course the car (late model high end car) GPS further screwed us up with further bad directions, Plus side is the first night we blew off the reservations and ate on property - meal could not have been better. Great property for relaxing long weekend. Word of caution. Like many quaint southern towns in the bible belt. most every store and many eating establishments, are closed on Sunday. Monday is little better. Recommend a Wed - Sat or Thus - Sun long weekend.

Stayed for 5 nights in early February at Chef’s cottage (upper) with my wife and our 2 labs. Can’t say enough about the accommodations, the service/staff, and the hotel. Dinners were wonderfully prepared, breakfasts were wonderful as well. We will be back, sadly not soon enough as we live 800miles north!
