I stayed at the hotel for 2 nights on a business some 12 years ago and decided to book again on a six-week retirement holiday across Asia with the Wife. I wished I had not used the Manila. The first visit after 25 hours on the road, an hour taxi and a fifteen-minute check in, was to the bar at 2345 to get glass of wine. It was a half glass and when the bill arrived it was £15. We asked for a cold beer next; however, it was now 65 seconds past midnight and we were told the bar closed at Midnight and there was no flexibility by a miserable dude in a stiff ensemble. We never went to the bar again but bought a 5Ltr box of wine from the Supermarket for £12. First problem was the Food was always cold, from the three restaurants we used. Plate warmers may help? I once watched as the fried rice was put out fresh in the buffet, but it was still barely lukewarm a minute later when I got to my seat. Breakfast was too cold to eat 4 mornings out of 5. Every morning you are shown to your seat, which is nice and efficient. However, if you arrive at 9.30, you are on your own to find a table, to find your own cutlery and you have to ask for Coffee. The fruit juice glasses were already stowed and getting water was a task. You are reminded three times they close at 10 from the moment you walk in and whenever you ask for something like coffee. The cold or mildly tepid evening buffet for the wife and I was close to 6000 Peso’s (almost £100) which we did not realise until second visit to the restaurant. I have paid more than a £100 for a meal before but it was high end chef and included wine. We were told a 30% reduction for guests on our Sunday visit, then another waitress told us 20% on Monday. Turns out they took 20% off (before tax) on the Monday and nothing from the Sunday. There is no hotel information in the room other than a room service menu. In front and below our balcony was a 100-foot conference tent. From 0800 in the morning until 1800 there was various people shouting into a microphone not stop. They started again on the Saturday with multiple sound checks ay 0600 and then the shouters started again at 0700. The next day (Sunday) at 0700 music started with what we assumed was a church service, in spite of this it went on until 1730. Asia is already noisy; we have visited over 10 times and expect it but people shouting down microphones for 10 hours a day is not normal. It rained, not a problem usually. Nonetheless the balconies started filling up with the rain and began flooding over the lip of the door. I went out in the rain and unblocked the drain which had about 6 inches of rubbish, leaves and mud over the hole. The balcony was filthy and was never cleaned when we were there. Next door balcony was thick in slimy grit worse than ours. The room was a fantastic size with all the 4-star amenities. Yet it’s let down by the bathroom floor was never washed. The spillage of what may have been dried coffee was there when we arrived and was still there when we left. The hotel itself is beautiful and pictures show it as fantastic. The pool area was nice, but no shade so we did not use it. We went to 7 countries staying at 8 hotels in 6 weeks. The Manila hotel was the noisiest, most expensive, unfriendly hotel on the entire trip and the only one to receive any negative comments.

The atmosphere of the hotel is great, classic interior and classic rooms. Staff is overall friendly and attentive. The room was clean and daily cleaning good. The elevators are fast. Unfortunately the windows in the guest rooms can’t be opened for some fresh air. Location is great with Intramuros on walking distance of around 15 minutes and MOA and the airport only 15-20 minutes by taxi if there is no rush hour. We found some improvements, one is the breakfast buffet which has basically no variety. It gets boring after a week. Besides this, the hot food like fried tomatoes, scrambled eggs or hash browns was not warm at all. Finally, as a western man with a Dutch-Filipina wife we both noted that staff were friendly and polite towards me but often ignored my wife….

My grandma loves to go out to roam around. Being 92 years old, she feels bored often as she stays in the house most of the time. She loves it when she knows that we'll go somewhere nice and have a cup of tea. She loves to stroll around in the city watching lights even when just stuck in traffic. My wife wants to take her grandma anywhere nice where we can all sit down and relax. The Manila Hotel is always on top of our list to visit and have a cup of tea/chocolate. Especially during December, the decorations are amazing and there is a quartet that plays music in the lobby. Grandma loves to visit here every now and again. Sadly, she passed away and we truly miss her company sitting and sipping tea with her while enjoying ourselves relaxing here. The last time we went here was pre-covid but her memories with us in this hotel will never be forgotten.

I would like to start by complimenting Jeffrey for his exceptional customer service. Initially had a couple of problems with the booking process but Jeffrey went out of his way to help and gave us a couple of extra benefits we weren’t expecting! Please take the time to commend him . Truly excellent. The hotel is fantastic as well. Stayed in a lot of 5 star hotels and this is up there with the best ones. Not sure what people find to complain about… room, service and restaurants are excellent. Will stay again

When you arrive here it all looks spectacular. Men in white outfits. A spectacular lobby... the lobby really is very grand. Unfortunately, guests do not stay in the lobby. They stay in rather run down rooms. Generally tired looking. The carpet was old and bunched up in places. Some pf the draws did not open. The power points by the bed did not work. The glasses had covers over them... but smelt very stale and unwashed. There had also not been a good cleaning done... there was dust on tables, and the window was filthy. If they want to claim this is a 5 star hotel, they need to spend some of the money they have splashed around on the lobby on basic maintence and cleaning. As it was... very dissapointing. On top of that, the food was very expensive for what it was... again, I got the feeling the hotel is coasting on a reputation it once had, but no longer deserves. Having said that, the rooms were not too expensive, and there were some good points. The view was spectacular over the city (although washing the windows would improve it) and there was a good bath, with bubbles which was nice after a long day. Perhaps if they improve house keepibg, and do a little refurbishment, this place will be worthy of its historical roots again.

When you enter the hotel, the interior looks luxurious. Rooms are also good but you won’t get the very best of The Manila Hotel’s room when you don’t book for the best room type. There’s also a buffet which is named Cafe Ilang-Ilang. They serve delicious foods with a wide variety of cuisines.

Stayed here overnight with my sister for a staycation, being locked down for more than two years due to the pandemic, I really looked forward to it. Plus it would be nice to be back to where I took my oath taking 15 years ago at the Centennial Hall. The lobby looked grand as it has always been. But the moment I stepped inside our room on the 12th floor, the rundown flooring of the shower room (looked like black grime was all over) immediately caught my attention. Plus the bath tub stinks. The hotel is over a hundred years old, but issues like these requires due attention. The floor carpet also looked dusty, and there was a pill under the arm chair, which to me means there was no thorough cleaning. Bottled water was overpriced, 10 times of what it's worth at a convenience store. I am supposed to use the flatiron in the morning but had second thoughts when I saw an exposed copper wire. Soundproofing was also poor. Breakfast at Cafe Ilang Ilang was ordinary, there was no crowd control, and there was a smell of kitchen towel that was not washed and dried properly. In addition I felt like there was a caste system at Cafe Ilang Ilang, where the elite looking guests get the best space, while we were assigned to a corner table where diners almost collide while in queue. I am not sure but maybe your place at the cafe depends on your room category. I already stayed in three to five star hotels here and abroad and this is the first time I got disappointed. At the check-in counter some guests cut in and don't have manners and to my surprise the front desk allows it. Seriously, the management should look into these issues and it would be nice if the hotel undergo a major renovation. If anything, I am just glad my sister enjoyed the grand lobby and their Willy the Bear mascot. All in all, I felt like I did not get value for what I spent.

PROS: 1. 20% discount when booking at least 2 weeks prior to date of stay when booking at their website. 2. Pleasant but unintrusive staff. Very responsive and efficient room service and housekeeping. 3. Clean comfortable room (room 434) 4. Great location. MH is a common venue for events with a lot of attractions within a 2 km radius (eg. Rizal park, Ocean park, National Museum, Planetarium etc.) 5. We appreciate that they left us a note explaining why they were having problems with their cable service provider. CONS: 1. Place is already showing signs of wear and tear (understandable since the hotel is already 110 years old) however defects that affect functionality should not be overlooked like our tub drain that won't open or the elevator indicators which both light up making it hard to tell whether it is ascending or descending. 2. Online payment is a bit complicated, once you reserve at their website you would still wait for an e-mail from another service provider which would give you a code (which expires in 24 hours) to input at the third party's website in order to make your payment. I always get redirected to another website while attempting to make the payment so I just e-mailed their reservations team directly and made my payment via bank transfer. 3. They have a small heritage museum that shows photos of the old Manila and a model of the hotel. However there are pedestals cramped on one side of the room with no displays on them. There are also QR codes below the photos scannable by the Manila hotel app but I can't find the app on Google play. Maybe they can spruce up this place as this would add depth to the history of the hotel. 4. View from room 434 is not that nice. So if you want a nice vista try asking for another room.

I brought my family tgis week here and we all had a great time. The swimming pool is perfect. While my kids and wife were swimming I got to enjoy 2 bottles of beer at the bar just very near the pool. Our room was also perfect and the staff was generous to provide us additional towels. Breakfast at Ylang Ykang was really good. The gym has new equipments. Overall it was an enjoyable moment for all of us.

The Manila Hotel no longer lives up to its reputation as the premier hotel in Manila. The staff hardly smile. They do not make conversation with the guests nor do they offer to help, not even with your bags when you arrive. Food was very ordinary. The breakfast buffet was disorganized with people cutting queues.
