Hiro’s Guesthouse is located an eventful 15-minute walk from Tsuruhashi Station, an eastern hub on the JR Osaka Loop line. Subway lines also depart from here, and Namba, a key shopping and entertainment area, is only 3 stops away. Another connecting train line heads towards the former ancient capital of Nara and can be reached in 30 minutes. Osaka Castle is a 20-minute walk or two stops by train.

Hiro’s Guesthouse is in the middle of Osaka’s Koreatown, a popular street with locals and visitors for food and gifts. There are many affordable restaurants and shops that line the lanterned street. If you ever need a kimchi fix this is the place. Hiro has a blackboard outside that says you can bring in outside food but to please buy a drink from him. That’s more than fair. Hiro, the man, is a friendly host, nearly fluent in English, and possesses a wealth of information about the area.

The ground floor of Hiro’s Guesthouse is where you can drink and eat at round tables in a relaxed atmosphere. Good music plays at a volume that is comfortable to talk. The interior space is composed of dark brick and coloured glass and directly faces the street which is great for people-watching. The second and third floors have dormitory beds and clean toilets. There’s a private tatami room too. Showers have great water pressure. Enjoy your stay!

Hiro's Guesthouse is about a 15-minute walk from the Tsuruhashi Station or Momodani Station but not a lot of cars are moving about so the roads are pretty open. Hiro's place is in the middle of Osaka's K-Town so it's always lively outside but not obnoxiously loud; probably good for people watching. As for the guestroom, it's on the second floor with ample amount of space between the beds and a couch to watch Japanese local tv on. It felt nice to not be so cramped like in the hostels I've been in. There's a fridge under the stairs that are also for guests to use.

The highlight of this stay is just hanging out with everyone downstairs to the point where I would make plans in the Namba area but would stay with them until closing time drinking beers and eating the light menu options they have - which are delicious! Hiro has a lot of life experience and always has interesting perspectives. They'll also look out for you and recommend you places to go if you're unsure of what to do. I felt really cared for, and it felt like I was at home. I plan to stay here again next time for sure.

Hiro is a very kind and welcoming host who will help you to make the most of your stay in Osaka. Since he knows the city very well it's always worth it to ask him for recommodations and advice. Being located in Korea Town, the guesthouse is the perfect base to explore the city. We've had a wonderful time, thank you!

Hiro is the best host a traveller could ask for. I can recommend his comfortable and welcoming guest house to any and everyone who plans to visit Osaka.

Whether you’re in need of some english-language guidance (like myself). or confident with Japanese and simply want some tips on local sights and colour, Hiro has you totally covered. And it’s a joy to sit-in and chat away in the first floor shared space.

In my case, he went out of his way to provide help ordering meals in adjacent Korea town, and even help planning the next leg of my trip and booking the next accomodation.

Truly a hero! Thank you Hiro’s Guest House!

Room: We spent four nights here and had the whole place to ourselves for three nights. We stayed in the private tatami room which was spacious and got a lot of natural light in the daytime. The shared areas were clean.

Service: As we were the only guests, we only saw Hiro, the owner once, but he often left us notes or was available by email if we needed him. His friend Brandon was also on hand every now and again to give us tips. Both of them were very helpful and organised for a suitcase of ours to be sent to Kyoto.

Location: Walking distance from two stations (about 10-15 min walks.) Walkable with luggage.

We arrived close to 9pm on a Friday night (thanks for waiting for us!) and expected Tsuruhashi to be a hive of activity but everything was pretty much shut. The majority of things open in the day time and tend to shut at ~5pmish. This wasn't an issue for us, but meant that we did tend to visit other areas for dinner as we wanted to be somewhere more lively. Staying here was a great chance to try some Korean food for breakfast/lunch though!

I would say this is probably one of the best experiences I had in a hostel. Hiro (the owner) is very accommodating and friendly. He even let me use his mobile for a local call (thanks Hiro). Everything is great from the bed to the sheets and the bathroom. I was curious with all the buttons. It was my first time to experience an electronic toilet bowl! It's a bit of a walk from the train station. Just look for Koreatown. You wont get lost. Bath towels can be rented and bath gel and shampoo are all provided. The room is very spacious. Has a common area on the second floor and ground floor. I like how the curtains segregated the room into 3. I stayed on the 2nd floor btw. Room rate is standard 2k yen per person. Would definitely come back and stay here on my next visit.

I have to say, If there is one special thing about this hostel that stands out among the rest, it is definitely (effects: drum roll) Hiro.
- He is very, very considerate, hospitable and accomodating. He will really go out of his way to help you out, i have to say beyond what is expected of an inn keeper.
- in his hostel, you can find a map of the korea town neighborhood that has the mapped restaurants (incl store hours), bathhouses and his recommended food to order - so it is easy to go around the area

If there is one critic, it would have to be its location. Although, the direction as what he posted in his website is very helpful, it is not near Tsuruhashi station as what it may have seem. If you have big luggage, or you are tired from touring around, it is quite cumbersome to have that walk to reach his place. If you dont mind the 15 min walk (20-35 min for me), then I say this is a good place to make your home base as you tour around Kansai.

Having stayed at Hiro's Guest House many times and then moved across the road to live in an apartment overlooking Hiro's, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the place and Koreatown.
Osaka is known as the 'Kitchen of Japan' for a good reason. Walking around the city, through the alleys and up and over each of the soft rolling hills that characterise this diverse part of Japan, the visitor is caressed by cooking smells that will bring even the most hardened weight-watchers disciple to their knees. At the heart of the vast cooking pot that is Osaka, is Koreatown, and in the centre of the bustling stalls, manned by fast-talking grandmothers who seem like they just stepped off the boat from Jeju Island yesterday, is Hiro's Guest House.
Standing as a beacon of salvation for weary travellers in need of a bed and/or a cold Asahi, Hiro's Guest house is the hub of Tsuruhashi, an area that has become famous for its eclectic range of delicious Japanese, Korean and even Chinese foods. I could spend more time talking about what is widely recognised as the best Okonomiyaki restaurant in Osaka, or the mouth watering slabs of pork and beef sold at the Korean BBQ joint metres from Hiro's place, or even the evenings sitting outside Hiro's Guest house, imbibing far to much beer and Chuhai with the locals who are always keen for a chat, even if your Japanese doesn't stretch past "Two beers and a circumcised chicken please." But the main reason to go to Hiro's Guest house, as those of you who have already taken a glance at the other reviews will notice, is the man himself - Hiro.
Yes, the man works like an ant (that's good, they work hard), maintaining the bunk rooms and the more private single rooms; keeping everything spotless, waiting up for guests coming in late; hosting the now famous squid ball parties and just generally making sure everyone has a good time. But it's more than that. It's about the lengths Hiro goes to to ensure that you know where the best food is, where the coldest beer is (usually in his fridge, i can attest to that) and how do see as much of Osaka as you can before you head to Tokyo (and then regret it). Ask him anything and he will go out of his way to make sure you are in the know. Buy food from one of the local stalls and bring it back to eat in his cafe - no problems.
Hiro's philosophy of 'take it easy' makes him seem more like a Hawaiian surfer than a Japanese business owner, but this is what gives his guesthouse that distinct feel and why people enjoy their stay there and come back.
So, to conclude, Osaka is awesome, Osakan food is awesome and it's best served with a hearty side of Hiro's local knowledge, oh, and one of those giant Asahi's from his beer fridge. Take it from someone who knows! Cheers.
