Near the best sites in Nagano city, relaxing. A couple of minutes walk to the Zenkoji Temple. You'll want to attend the 5 am chanting. The monks parade in, give you a rap on the head if you kneel for it. Also easy access to buses for the hiking area. About 15 minute walk from the train station, or three... More

I arrived to be greated with a hot cup of buckwheat tea and all the information for the area that I needed. The Hostel has everything you need plus more. Washing facilities, a good hot shower, kitchen with everything you'll need, free coffee and different types of yummy teas, plenty to keep you warm in the cooler months and great... More

Very friendly staff who are helpful and very knowledgeable of timetables and the ways to get to places. It's very close to the Zenkoji shrine, and very close to a bus stop, or its about a 15min walk from the JR station, up a slight incline. Rooms are very clean. The dorms have privacy curtains. There are heaters in each... More

This hostel is fantastic! The staff welcome you as if you are an old friend, make you tea on your arrival and are beyond nice. I loved every moment of our stay. Only issue we had was the cold, but the staff had extra blankets and hot water bottles to keep us warm. We even got a free upgrade to... More

Great Location, Only 10 mins walk to Senkoji Temple and downtown Nagano. The room is quite ok but you don't have door-locked ,Share bathroom is small but clean though. Well English spoken staff ,polite and helpful.Good Choice for a budget accommodation in downtown Nagano.

Overall we were very happy staying here for one night. The location suited us fine for exploring the main sights of Nagano in one day. The owner was absolutely lovely, very friendly, caring and helpful. The private room we stayed in was simple but efficient. The main downside is the shared tiny toilet and shower. Great for a short stay.

1166 Backpackers is a friendly hostel in a typical Japanese house close to the main attraction in Nagano. Zenkoji Temple is only a few minutes away. The hostel has bunk beds upstairs and a small kitchen and living room downstairs. There is free tea and coffee all day. When I was there I met interesting backpackers from around the world.... More

I have never spent as much time in a hostel as in this one. The staff is incredibly friendly and always eager to provide information on the best places to see, eat or do in Nagano or nearby. Moreover, they are funny, kind-hearted and try to create a family-like atmosphere. This is complemented by very nice and clean rooms with... More

This is a terrific little hostel on a quiet little street but a stones throw from Zenkō-ji. Probably about a 15min walk from Nagano JR Station (or 150¥ by local bus). It really just feels like someone's house - but its best feature are its staff. As someone who works in the industry - the customer service here was 5... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
1166 backpackers is a place to sleep, meet local people in Nagano, Japan. We have 3 rooms waiting for you to sleep in. Our lounge is a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy with playing games or reading books. We are located in the MONZEN neighborhood in the old city center where is few steps away from the Zenkoji temple. Travel as escaping the hustle and bustle of urban city to Zenkoji temple, you will see old traditional houses here and there. To be amazed, over 50 small business like cafes, restaurants, book shops, flower shops, galleries and craft shops are newly opened by young people in this 5 years with renovating old warehouses in this area. These shops are not for busy tourists hopping around major touristic spots with lonely planet but for tourists who need time for chill-out. As we all know, Nagano city is hub of hopping around major spots like ZENKOJI TEMPLE, SNOW MONKEY PARK, MATSUMOTO CASTLE, OBUSE, TOGAKUSHI, ONSENs and more. So, what I want to say is we are best-located hostel for both sides of sightseeing and relax time!! ... more   less
