We arrived on a rainy night, they received us very friendly, give us some nice hints to dinner. They have a friendly staff. The room was small, very small, but well is a new experience as almost everything in kyoto, you have to look as the simple but meaningful things. Good relation Cost/Benefit (January 2014)

Thank you for staying at TOWA. We are pleasured to hear that you did japanese experiences!! I suppose it might be difficult to sleep with Futon on tatami matress as unusual or eating a japanese breakfast however it's japanese people's real life:) Thank you very much again. We are looking forward to seeing you again!! Not sure what I expected, but on reflection, the ryokan is exactly what it says it is. The photos do it justice. We didn't get our welcome tea, which was disappointing, there were a few people in the public area so maybe they were too busy. We had wanted to try Kaiseki style, and although I haven't had it elsewhere... More

It was our first time staying in a ryokan. We enjoyed the matcha tea when we checked in. We had the kaiseki dinner served directly to our room. It had 9 courses with plenty of food and took 1.5 ~ 2 hours. We enjoyed trying the variety of dishes. We had Japanese-style breakfast which was served in the banquet hall.... More

As you said it might be hard to sleep on Futon if you aren't used to do it,however it could be typical experience in Japan. Also it was a even casual way we hope you... More

We enjoyed our stay at Towa. We stayed in the traditional Machita, which can host comfortably 4 to 6 people, with 2 spacious bathroom and a little private patio great to park bikes (we rented bikes close to the station at Kyoto Eco Trip http://www.kyoto-option.com/en/) The house is very clean, with great amenities, it is very quiet in a pretty... This is a good and clean japanese style ryokan near the railway station. I stayed there for 2 nights. The location is convenient, and there are also a lot of japanese / western restaurants nearby. The room is spacious, staff very warm and helpful. The wifi was not very strong though. Though the room has a private toilet and bath... More

We had a quiet, clean and all new room, but unfortunately the whole structure lacks the true ryokan atmosphere since hosted in a western concrete building with a small bathroom in the basement. We had a cold bureaucratic welcome with double document check and advanced payment. We had no opportunity to try their website acclaimed dinner since we had no... More

Perhaps my expectations were already managed with all the reviews saying that the ryokan is not as luxurious as what the website makes it out to be. However, for the price category (and accommodation in Kyoto is not cheap), the ryokan has done very well in terms of the friendliness and warmth of the service, the quality of food and... More

Stayed for a night. Towa is a more like a western hotel but in machiya style, not the traditional Ryokan. Nevertheless, I was greeted with very friendly and cheerful staff, with a complimentary matcha and sweets when I checked in. Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
