The room and bathroom are clean but somehow when we enter, the tatami in entry area got some wet. The living/public area is kind dirty which need more maintenance. The staff are helpful but not that kind. They have bike rental service but DON'T rent there, although the rate is cheaper but the bike condition is horrible. The only spark... More

We booked this guest house due to the good review of its sister hotel. However, it's pretty disappointed. Before we entered the guest house,it already smelled bad. Our room is on the first floor right beside the kitchen. Although it felt like we could totally use the kitchen as our own space but due to the bad smell I don't... More

I found Ikoi-no-ie a good and clean guesthouse, but nothing special either. No real highs or lows to report. What attracted me primarily that they do nice last-day offers on private rooms for single travelers, thereby avoiding paying high rates or having to sleep in a dorm (now too old for that!). The rooms are traditional Japanese style, and are... More

Ikoi-no-ie is a good choice for people not wishing to spend a fortune in Kyoto. It's conveniently located (easy 10minute walk from the Kyoto Station, good access to other public transport like buses and subway). However, you're not right in the centre like downtown or Gion. There is also a convenience store nearby, (7/11) with an ATM that services foreign... More

Nice staff who gave us accurate information on hotel rules and facilities. We liked the fact that we could take maps and/or borrow pamphlets on the main Kyoto events (as well as Nara/Kansai and further areas). The reception was closed during the night (from 10 pm till 8 am) but we had our room keys, so we could come back... More

Really nice, be prepared to sleep on the floor with rice pillows but nice and comfy! Good location off the main road in the quiet backstreets. Really helpful staff who speak english really well! Bit of a walk from the JR station but close to the subway. Would stay again.

I am just come back from Japan, stayed in Ikoi No Ie in Kyoto four nights over ( ome more nights asked at last!). Nice and cosy place, close to the station ( 1o minutes by walk, 5 minutes by bus 3 stops), plenty of commonal services, with frendly and young staff all day available at reception. They were alwas... This is a very nice little ryokan-style hotel, more like a guest house than anything else. The staff all wear kimono and speak very good English. They organize fun events and have a LOT of information about Kyoto restaurants, transportation, festivals, etc. Our room was very comfortable (although a little small), and we had free access to internet, shower and... Nice ryokan style hostel, very clean shared toilets, comfortable rooms. Very hard to find, 15 minutes walking from the train station, I would rather stay around Gion area, where all nice bars and restaurants, and a lot of temples too, are.

Good little hotel. Hard to find, especially after a long train ride or a night of drinking. The address given is not reception, reception is 1/2 a block away. Not a big deal. I don't like sharing a shower, but hey....you get what you pay for. Nice size room, so cat swingers will be happy. Loved the staff, a great... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
