Normally, I don't leave reviews but I want everyone to know how terrific this place is and for Compass to be successful. I would honestly give a higher score than 5 if I could. This place is wonderful for budget travellers. We stayed with Mama, Papa and Coco for our whole trip to Japan for 10 nights without regrets. For... More

Wonderful stay in this typical Kyoto house. Very clean and great sleep on futon - nice area very quiet but 10min from station by bus (3 different buses). Mama (the owner) gave us excellent indications and tips and we could even enjoy a diner in a Very traditional Japanese bar style restaurant, small and local- the kind of place difficult... More

We stayed in the most beautiful double room in this amazing guesthouse. The hosts were wonderful people who made our stay excellent. This was the most beautiful room I have stayed in in years and the price for Kyoto was also very favorable. Kyoto is an amazing city; this guesthouse is only 10 minutes on bus from the station. Only... More

Lovely traditional ryokan style hotel in Kyoto. A little far from things, but well worth a stay. The staff are the main selling point of this place and you'd do very well to find a more helpful and friendly set of staff anywhere in Kyoto. Positives - Staff are fantastic. Really friendly and helpful. - The private room we stayed... More

Excellent stay, Mama and Coco were very helpful. We stayed 2 nights in the private room which was amazing, it has its own wing of the house by the Zen garden. The bathroom on that side of the house is rarely used so it's pretty much private. Highly recommend coming here.

Friendly family vibe, mama (the head of the house) spoke impeccable English, free breakfast, great facilities, and authentic Japanese architecture. Couldn't have asked for more. Would definitely return if visited Kyoto again.

Everything is Perfect: - the host is Mama, a friendly lady who has a natural gift, she makes you feel at home. - the house is very nice and elegant - the little zen garden - the breakfast in the morning.

I spent 4 happy nights with MAMA and COCO. They were really verrrrrrrrrrry nice all the time. The guest house is traditional Japanese style with a small beautiful garden. Everything is clean and warm. MAMA gets up early to prepare breakfast for guests, bread, milk, coffee, juice, egg and fruits. And if you need a Kyoto Bus 1 Day Pass,... More

I had an amazing stay with Mama and her family in Kyoto. It truly felt like home away from home! She went out of her way to help me with my day to day plans in the city, and even provided bus cards for the day, and lent me an umbrella when I didn't have one. I stayed in the... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We took an old Kyoto house, with it's 100 years of history, and turned it into this guesthouse. It is about 15 minutes from Kyoto station by bus. It's very conveniently located to many sightseeing spots. And we are surrounded by local atmosphere, a shopping street and public bath houses. You can enjoy Kyoto from a variety of different angels. ... more   less
