The room we had was on the top floor and a good size, with good amenities in terms of lovely bathroom, products, sitting area. However TV channels very limited, especially for non Japanese guests. Ended up watching CNN every evening... Also we had trouble getting back to the hotel on multiple occasions; it's a bit off the beaten track and... More

I chose the villa Aneyakoji as a change from the big hotels around the main railway station. As it's located in a residential back street my taxi driver had a little trouble finding it but it was worth the effort. It's only small with a handful of rooms but is very comfortable and the staff bend over backwards in typical... More

We spent two nights in this small (only 7 rooms) elegant boutique hotel. We have been nicely welcomed, all the staff was exceptionally kind and made our stay memorable. The rooms are definitely larger than standard, modern, very well decorated with sophisticated japanese touch, high quality standards and care of details. Breakfast can be served in the room free of... More

I stayed here for three nights with my daughter. This is a small, boutique hotel in a quiet residential neighborhood. Breakfast (Japanese or Western-style) is included, with the option of taking the meal in your room. We ate in the small entry foyer, which doubles as a bar area in the evening (although I never saw another guest during our... More

This hotel was the perfect antidote to five nights on futons ;-). Nothing very Japanese about the hotel except for the polite front desk staff. Beds were comfy, bathroom luxurious with a deep soaking tub. We loved the location on a quiet side street in a real neighborhood full of charm and people just going about their business. Across the... More

The place is amazing. It is located only 2 blocks from Nijo castle. Easy access to other nice attractions. We stayed at the top floor, with own balcony. The breakfasts were served in room --- no extra charge for room service :) The staff was extremely nice. We totally enjoyed the experience. Will come back and recommend to anyone.

Located in a quiet street only blocks from the Castle, the Palace and the Nishiki markets (shopping), this hotel is in an excellent location. It's very comfortable, the staff bend over backwards to help and the walk home is past lots of little restaurants and shops. Highly recommended.

My wife & I stayed for 11 nights in January-February this year in Room 302 at this property. The Villa is located on a quiet residential street a block south & east of 2 major streets, although the only traffic noise we heard during our stay was the occasional siren from vehicles using a nearby fire/ambulance station. I suspect we... More

I have stayed at the Villa Aneyakoji one night from 22nd to 23rd October 2013. I know my review seems a bit outdated but I have never taken the time to write it and this hotel totally deserves some words. At the time of my stay the hotel was only 5months old. We had a very professional welcome and check-in... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
