The best thing to say about the Monterey is the location--close to most of the things you want to see/do in Kyoto. The beds were larger than average for Japanese hotels and were comfortable. The downside was the cleanliness and service was not what we had come to expect from our experiences in Japan up to that point. It was...

This was a pleasant hotel with a sento (bath-house) on the top level. It has a very good location close to subway stations and buses to all of the main sights within Kyoto. It is also very close to Dean and Deluca where I got my daily fix of quality expresso, a drug store, convenience store and restaurants. My room...

We stayed here for the Kyoto part of our honeymoon. Nice clean hotel, handy location and more budget friendly than the rest of the hotels we stayed at around Japan. I would say manage your expectations in regards to the room sizes as they are quite small. Our bed nearly took up most of the room space and the bathroom...

Good hotel close to subway, train station, and shopping district. Rooms are average size for Japan and feel modern. The front desk staff speak English. There's a spa, but you have to pay to enter. The breakast buffet seems a little expensive.

Hotel Monterey is a Kimpton-like hotel in Kyoto, centrally located for easy access (walking) to the Imperial Gardens, Gion, the Nijo-jo Castle and right around the corner from a wonderful shrine, Rokkaku-do Temple, which is the birthplace of ikebana. Easy access to the many forms of public transit used to visit Kyoto. Well-deserved reputation for a lovely onsen. The hotel...

We stayed here for three nights. The location is very good, walking distance to old Kyoto and a few stops in the underground from Kyoto station. Room was good, but the bed in double room a bit narrow! Good breakfast but you need to be there well before closing time otherwise some of the treats are finished.

Beautiful hotel with Onsen Japanese style bath in penthouse. Very elegant French restaurant and amazing staff...though i do speak French but couldn't understand some of the menu which seemed to be mistranslated:-) One of the better hotels I stayed in in Japan.

I stayed here last summer in June and it's a lovely hotel. I had a single room with a giant bed by any standard! It was 2 full sized beds put together, amazing for Japan! The hotel is very close to the subway and one stop from Kyoto station. Across the street is a bus stop and Nishiki market is...

While the hotel it self was lovely, the concierge was fantastic and got us a late notice Kobe beef reservation. The mattress was very uncomfortable, it was a short mattress with next to no padding so each coil was felt. This was our third hotel on our Japan trip and was by far the most uncomfortable bed. The rest of...

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
