Detailed Reviews
The location was great for exploring the Higashiyama temples. Kyoto is a very spread out city so it is hard to get to all locations easily- Higashiyama however has a substantial concentration of temples and the setting is quite idyllic. We split our party between Kasuien and the main building and appreciated that option. Although Miyako Kyoto was great overall, Kasuien really did stand out with its beautiful rooms and bath. The room was spotless and the smell of wood that permeated it was memorable. The bath, in particular, with volcanic water option, and natural lighting, was spectacular. We caught Kyoto in a cold spell and saw some snow in March, and the room was a bit cool - but the temperature was perfect for restorative sleep in the fluffy cozy bedding. The conveniences of a modern hotel (including great new fitness facilities; pool; extensive buffet breakfast with beautiful views of the city and mountain) combined with the luxury of a ryokan in a convenient location was quite unique to the hotel and much appreciated. We did wish the lounge was open more often (it was only open at 10 a.m. most days; and closed for breaks many times) to make it more convenient to get beverages. The new onsen with hot spring water was also nice, if relatively basic. All in all, a classic, historic, comprehensive hotel, great especially for families or larger groups with various needs and interests.

Thank you very much for choosing The Westin Miyako Kyoto for your recent stay. Our hotel is located in the Okazaki area of Kyoto, renowned for its abundance of temples and shrines, and historically significant as a key base for the Tokugawa Shogunate. Following the Meiji Restoration, as Kyoto citizens lamented the city's lag in modernization compared to Tokyo, they undertook the ambitious project of bringing water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto, a pioneering effort 130 years ago. This initiative gave birth to Japan's first hydroelectric power plant and water purification facility, alongside the introduction of electric trams and numerous domestic exhibitions. Today, this area stands as a celebratory space combining historical buildings with modern architectural heritage. 130 years ago, The Westin Miyako Kyoto was established, embracing its historical roots. Designed over five decades by the renowned architect Togo Murano, both "Kasuien" and the main building were hailed as masterpieces. Recently, in line with Murano's visionary legacy, we have completed extensive renovations to ensure these landmarks are preserved for future generations. Notably, we have introduced "Spa KACHO," Kyoto's largest spa covering 2,100 square meters, featuring natural hot springs excavated from within our grounds. The new "Kasuien" faithfully incorporates Murano's original design, extending these hot springs directly into guest rooms, where bathtubs crafted from "Maki" wood emit a rich aroma. We are committed to continuously enhancing our hospitality, striving to provide a richer experience beyond our exceptional facilities. We invite you to visit Kyoto throughout the seasons, where its captivating charm awaits. We eagerly await the opportunity to welcome you back.

I would like to stay at this hotel again. This time, I took a bus from Itami Airport to Kyoto Station Hachijo Exit, and there was a hotel shuttle bus nearby, so I was able to get on with about a 5-minute wait. The hotel bus runs every 30 minutes and can be used without a reservation. It took about 20 minutes from Hachijo Exit to arrive at the hotel. The spacious entrance makes you feel relaxed. There are 4 elevators, so you can get there without waiting. My room was on the 6th floor, but there was also a direct elevator to the natural hot spring, pool, and fitness center on that floor, which was very convenient. The large public bath was more luxurious than I expected, and there was a semi-open-air bath, so I was able to really relax. There was a wide variety of breakfast options, so I had to take a look around first before eating, otherwise I would overeat. Needless to say, the taste was delicious. There are no shops around the hotel, but there is a convenience store about 6 minutes walk away.
If you don't mind walking a little, it's convenient for going to Nanzenji Temple and Kiyomizu Temple. A taxi to Yasaka Shrine or Gion costs over 1,000 yen, but taxis in Kyoto are friendly and recommended.
The rooms, breakfast, and facilities were so great that I wanted to visit every month.

I stayed here using an AMEX certificate. I decided to stay at the Kyoto Westin because guests are provided with breakfast service. I traveled by train, and wanted to take the shuttle bus from Kyoto Station to leave my luggage before sightseeing, so I arrived at the hotel in the morning. As soon as I got off the shuttle bus, I was greeted by the hotel doorman and staff and left my luggage there, which I didn't feel was so polite these days. Maybe it was before check-in, but I felt that the staff was short-staffed and services like this had deteriorated due to the coronavirus pandemic, so I received a very warm hospitality and had a comfortable stay. Also, even though it was a Saturday, I was upgraded to a room with a Heiankyo view and was guided to use the lounge for breakfast, which was very satisfying. I especially liked SPA Kacho. It is a very luxurious space. The dressing room is wonderful in that it is designed to ensure personal space, and it is well-cleaned, so it feels clean and comfortable. It is a semi-open-air bath, but it is quite spacious, so even though it was crowded, I didn't feel cramped and I was able to relax and relax. I heard that the restaurant has a good buffet breakfast menu, so I would like to try the restaurant next time.

The beautiful renovated property is totally different than when I stayed last time 8 years ago. The rooms are modern and super classy, certainly the nicest Westin room I've stayed in. The dining / breakfast is stellar. And the biggest selling point, which for some reason seems undersold in their marketing, is the new onsen spa, which uses actual natural onsen waters. It is like a Roman caldarium palace and begs to be seen. It was truly the highlight of my stay.
One (not so small gripe) though that would make me hesitate to choose it again.
I had to arrive to Kyoto fairly early (9:30am). When I arrived the check-in staff literally looked at me like they had seen a ghost, and kept looking at their watches when I said I wanted to check in. I didn't expect my room to be ready, but they wouldn't even check to see if there was a room ready for me, and didn't take down my name, passport details, etc. I am a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium member, and would have expected at least a (half-hearted) effort to find an open room. I was then sort of escorted out of the hotel once they let me drop off my luggage in a way that felt really pushy.
Maybe I had a bad experience, but it seemed totally unnecessary and something I've never experienced in a Westin property. I had chalked it up to a Japanese thing but then in the rest of my three-week trip any time I arrived early hotels made an effort to accommodate me.

First of all, we would like to express our sincere apologies for your disappointment in our hotel and for not meeting your expectations. As you have pointed out, the check-in staff should have been there for you, even if you arrived early, to find and prepare a room for you so that you could relax in your room as soon as possible. The staff lacked the compassion, kindness, empathy, and imagination that every hotel staff member should have for you. We sincerely apologize for this. I will ensure that management and all staff members reaffirm and reinforce the poor service you have pointed out. Management and all staff will reconfirm and work to improve the situation so that we can meet the expectations of our guests as a Westin brand. Once again, I would like to express my deepest apologies for the inadequacies in our service and management. Sincerely yours, Yuji Osawa Manager Front Office The Westin Miyako Kyoto

Excellent hotel. Great room (had a junior suite) with a fantastic view. Staff was friendly and helpful (but a bit understaffed). The bath spa was amazing -brand new! We made the mistake of ordering room service for dinner. The food took nearly 1 hour to arrive and everything was cold. Had breakfast in the restaurant the next morning (also understaffed). The poached eggs were overcooked and hard and the scrambled eggs were undercooked and runny. Recommend eating "outside" of the hotel. Other than that, I highly recommend this hotel.

The spa and member lounge were notoriously bad, but I made a reservation to stay there.
but it was a mistake.
The lounge was crowded and I was told that it was too noisy when I was talking with my friends.
I was sitting next to her, so it wasn't loud.
Many people didn't know that the lounge is a place to have a good time talking.
Also, I had asked about problems with children, phones, etc. and the hotel replied that they would improve So I used it with peace of mind.
but in Japan, do they bring plastic bottles into the spa?
I spilled water from a plastic bottle in my mouth into the bathtub, and even though the corona has calmed down, it is still filthy!
Spilling water in the sauna would be even more filthy!
First hotel I've ever been to that allowed me to bring in plastic bottles and it was filthy!
Even Westerners know Japanese manners such as not bringing in towels, but why can't the Japanese?
I have stayed in Tokyo and Kobe, and all of those hotels do not allow plastic bottles in the spa.
The Westin was not a luxury hotel, but a Japanese onsen ryokan hotel.

This hotel was always good, but after their renovations before the Tokyo Olympic Games, they have now transformed this property into something spectacular. The rooms have a wet room which is like having your own private onsen! The decor is beautiful, and the rooms spacious. The facilities in the hotel are first class. The buffet is great and good value. But the real bonuses are location (on the eastern side of Kyoto close to Keage Incline, and the temples and shrines) and the shuttle bus (back and forth to Kyoto Station). Kyoto is the best place to be in Japan for tourism and accessibility; and the Westin Miyako is the best place to be in Kyoto!

Service is excellent! The room is spacious. The hotel has a the facilities like gym, car park etc..The highlight will be the onsen!
They also welcome the kids with kids amenities and activities books.
The car park is not free but is flat rate for 1500 yen per day.
Breakfast is delicious and has a lot of varieties.
We requested the service to transfer our luggage from Kyoto to Tokyo hotel that we are staying. The arrangement is seamless and efficient. I just inform the check in staff when I checked in. On the day I was sending the luggage, all information already filled up and prepared for me, I just need to let them measure the luggage size and make payment during check out. The transfer of luggage is only taking 1 day from Kyoto to Tokyo. But to play safe, they will tell you they need 2 days.
The location is good. Is around 10 min to 15 min drive to most of the Kyoto attractions.
Definitely will stay back if we come back to Kyoto again.
Good job, Westing Miyako Kyoto team!

We arrived for two nights with high expectations as we stayed here ten years ago.
This hotel is isolated if you want to walk to great restaurants, shopping or parks. However there is a subway station nearby, and a shuttle that operates between the hotel and Kyoto train station that is a positive.
Staff are enthusiastic, willing to assist in any task.
Rooms are recently renovated, modern and we were upgraded which was nice.
But I save my greatest disappointment for the club lounge. I am a lifetime platinum Bonvoy member and have experienced the best and worst of club lounges around the world. This is one of the worst.
Canapés are embarrassing in the lack of range, quality and substance. But it gets worse. Children no matter what age can attend throughout the cocktail and canapé servings. Battling children running around as if it were a crèche is not my idea of a serene, sophisticated club lounge.
Now if you have a bevy of children, or you like to drink copious amounts of alcohol, this is your club lounge. However it’s just poor management to mix the two and expect a happy outcome.
There are so many good options in Kyoto which is a fabulous place to visit, but unfortunately management have taken this hotel backwards in elegance and sophistication.it may be newly renovated but it’s not an oasis for couples.

Westin Kyoto is located in a quiet neighborhood but east connected via the city metro. The rooms are very well refurbished with a touch of Japanese luxury. The city view suite looks over the entire Kyoto city, with Heian Shrine in sight! The breakfast is the best I’ve experienced in any hotels. There are so many authentic Japanese options which you’ll never expect in an international brand. The hotel onsen is quite large and there’s a semi open air onsen, perfect for winter! Definitely recommend Westin for travelers wishing for a semi secluded stay!
