I stayed here for one night and quite like it. The outside appearance of this ryokan is so nice. The room is also big enough and clean. For the rate we paid, this ryokan is really worth it. The big plus for me is this ryokan surprisingly about 15 minutes walking distance from main gion street. Metro is also 5-7... More

We stayed here for a couple of night...it's been a long time dream to experience staying in a ryokan and Kohro sure isn't disappointing. It's a new and modern style with includes rooms with en suite. You can choose one with shared bathroom also for less price. Definitely clean and tidy, everything is beautifully put together, a total Japanese style.... More

A number of good points and bad points for this ryokan-hotel hybrid: Good - Location - Breakfast in the room - tasty and good value Bad - Free Wifi signal poor in the room - Rooms a little frayed around the edges (though nothing too shabby for a 3* hotel) - Poor Service English was spoken by most staff but... I spent a while to get to the hotel. It will be better of there is a map guiding the guest from the nearest subway station. Although only some of them can communicate in simple English, every staff shows their caring, politeness and helpfulness. The room is big. The staff prepared the tatami (the bed) for the guest when we... More

At a walking distance from both Karasuma and Gojo metro stations very close to the Nishiki Market and 10 minutes away from Gijon, this Ryokan did not let us down. THe Japanese style room were comfy and the service was super. Every morning we had our tatami prepared, and our kimonos changed. The Ryokan bath was roomy and modern. A... More

Stayed for two nights after deciding to spend some extra time in Kyoto (had been staying just round the corner before). This is a really good value for money place giving you the sleeping on tatami experience but less "Japanesed-up" than other places. For example the front desk staff dress in Western style clothes rather than traditional dress. This doesn't... More

A good balance of location, ryokan experience and value. It was comfortable and pleasant enough - obviously nicely renovated since some of earlier reviews, The room size wasn't too bad by Japanese standards - we had a shower but the shared bath was also welcome after walking all day. The western breakfast was good but you needed to give 24... More

This is the 3rd ryokan we stayed on this trip. Loved the tatami mat floor, the onsen is fabulous and open till late which is perfect after a day of sightseeing to soothe the tired body. Easy to get around from this ryokan, we walked mostly to the nearby attractions. The gentleman was very humorous, helpful and spoke good English.... More

Unsure why this place hasn't been reviewed in years but my wife and two sons (one baby and one 4 nearly 5) stayed here for one night in April 2014. Apart from sleeping here, we didn't spend much time as we wanted to be out and about in Kyoto. However, our time here was good. We accessed the hotel by... More

At the end I was satisfied with the ryokan, but we had to change rooms. Good things: fantastic onsen - made of cedar wood, which gave the room a wonderful smell, they have very good cosmetic products there, also it was open till late and even though it is a public bath, I had a nice feeling of privacy. of... Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighborhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
