During our stay in mid-April, the temperature outside got up to 70° F, but inside our room it was warm and stuffy. It also reeked of smoke even though we had reserved non-smoking rooms. After calling reception, a very nice man came and sprayed air freshener and opened the window. This, of course was useless, except to demonstrate that they...

This hotel needs to work on their ventilation. We spent 4 nights there in april. It was cold outside (about 10-15 C) but so warm and humid in the room that we couldn't sleep at night. We asked twice if they could fix the AC but nothing got better. It was not possible to open the window and the airpurifier...

The hotel is comfortable and was quite convenient to the train station. It is clean, and provided the usual toiletries, plus a small fridge and coffee/tea maker. It was supposed to be a non-smoking room/floor, however, when we walked the hallway, we smelled the smoke. When we called the desk, they provided us with an air freshener. For short time...

The hotel had a Starbux at the ground floor and was in front of a train station. There were few nearby Lawson & 7-Eleven. The only comment I have is that they didn't have any english movie channels. They had a couple of English news channel only. Also, they didn't have complimentary coffee, just tea.

We had a pleasant stay at Karasuma Kyoto Hotel. It's located near Shijo station which is 2 stops from Kyoto station, but not on a JR line (you can't use your JR rail pass if you have one). It was a good location however, walking distance to the Gion area and to Nishiki market. The hotel was basic but served...

The hotel is central. Easy to walk or catch trains/subway/buses to various locations. (The transport system in Kyoto is full of non-integrated transport lines) The room was larger than others I have had in Japan, the bathroom was the usual small compact. The twin beds were very comfortable. It was clean but was lacking a safe. The hotel did offer...

This hotel is centrally located. Only 2 station away from kyoto station. Take subway karasuma line to Shijo station (exit 6). The room is nice and clean. Bathroom fully equipped with necessary toiletries. Only one thing, however, wifi is so slow and signal is unstable. It keeps disconnects every 3 mins or so make it impossible for me to download...

I stayed here for three nights in August, it was approx 25 mins walk from Kyoto station (quite hard going in the heat with heavy rucksacks) so was happy to arrive at the hotel. The reception area is lovely and although our triple room was absolutely fine for our needs it was a little tired looking in comparison. The room...

This hotel is adequate, clean, comfortable, average. Nothing extraordinarily extravagant. Decent location. Starbucks near lobby is nice and convenient for morning coffee and breakfast. Short walks to local public transportation. Price is typical for Japanese hotel of this size/location etc.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
