We stayed in a few Tooyoko Inns during our time in Japan, and this hotel seemed just that little bit better than that chain of hotels, and a touch pricier. Well worth it though. The only downside for me was the location - while it wasn't bad, it wasn't great for walking access to the main sites of Higashiyama and... More

We had many doubts while choosing hotel in Kyoto and finaly stayed in Palace Side Hotel for 6 nights. It was a great choise, and we are very glad we did it. The hotel is located in very quiet and calm place in Kyoto, just near the Imperior Palace. There are metro station and bus stop in a 5 minutes... More

The best hotel I've tested in Japan, room are huge, and clean, the price is cheap. If you want to visit Kyoto don't hesitate, and it's very close to the imperial palace

This hotel is situated in an excellent environment. Literally next to the Palace. Calm and peaceful. North of subway Karasuma line Marutamachi exit number 2 ( with no elevator, exit number 5 has an elevator). Staff speaks fluent english and are generally cheerful and helpful. Free internet in the lobby (30 minutes max) or borrow an ethernet cable to use... More

The location is great. few stops away from Kyoto station. Just next to the Imperial Palace. The Hotel was great value for money. Clean and staff were very friendly. free internet in the lobby. Breakfast was average. Room size ok. not small.

My stay at The Palace Side Hotel was really a good experience. I wanted an affordable hotel to rest after several hours walking the streets of Kyoto and worked just fine. The bathroom is similar to others I've stayed (cabin-like) but always very clean. The doors are very thin and you can hear people breathing outside the room, but I... More

I stayed here during a conference and very much enjoyed my stay. Staff are very polite and I never had any problems. The single room I was in was basic and clean, comfortable and with A/C which is necessary in the summer in Kyoto. They have very good rates if you stay longer, which was one of the reasons I... Stayed at this hotel back in April 2008. Decided to stay here because it was cheap, which allowed us to stay a few extra days in Kyoto. The staff was friendly and helpful. There's a restaurant conveniently located in the lobby. The room was clean, but was what you'd expect for the price. As many other reviewers have said before,... More

this hotel is OK. Older style hotel with tiny washrooms. We used the washrooms down in the lobby instead during our stay. No internet in the rooms, and public computers are timed for max 30 minutes. You can bring your own laptop to the lobby and hook it up using LAN cable. No wireless access. Hotel provides rental bicycles, which... More

This hotel is nothing fancy (rooms are small - where aren't they small in Japan? - cabin bathroom little isolation), however it is 2 to 4 times cheaper than main of the other hotels in Kyoto. The hotel staff has been extremely friendly with us, although we have been travelling with 2 kids of 6 y.o. and 2 babies of... More

Staying in Nishijin District

Neighborhood Profile
Nishijin District
A district with a long textile heritage, ancient Kyoto is still alive in the Nishijin District. Studded with its weaving factories, tea houses, and onsen, the neighborhood is charming and peaceful with a self-possessed air. Less traveled than other parts of the city, it is a district where you can take it at your own pace. Visitors can explore the many weaving and cloth houses, the free kimono shows, and the many shops selling traditional clothing and goods. Showcasing architecture with sloping roofs and wooden reliefs dating to decades past, the streets in the Nishijin District transport you back in time, making them a joy to wander.
