This place was a real gem of a find, when we booked it we weren't expecting what we got! Having spent the night before in their sister ryokan on the east side of Kyoto we were expecting similar, as it was very good. But it was better! The rooms seem better maintained and have more plugs! you get the same...

They all speak english fluently and act professionally. The public bath was another great way to experience how local people enjoying the hot spring. The reason I didn't give 5 stars...

Plus: traditional ancient Japanese style living, good room amenities esp the warm jackets, hospitable front desk staff who could speak good Eng, 10 min walk from Kintetsu station, 1 min walk to convenient stores n a good veggie restaurant for good dinner buffet, bus stop nearby for going to major attractions. Yet as it is a hostel, although we requested...

Me and my boyfriend got allocated to a room upstairs, the room is mini sized but rustic and lovely. Sharing facilities are very clean and tidy. Everything is wonderful until late night around 11pm ( there's no curfew time but rule no.1 is to stay quiet from 10pm) A group of Chinese speaking tourists moved into a room next to...

If part of the reason you're going to Kyoto is seeing the cool old buildings, check out Haruya. As someone who's interested in history and old houses, I just found it really neat. Having said that- it is an old Japanese house: so creaky. Really creaky. And holy cow does the sound travel. Just pray the other guests follow the...

The place is clean and quiet. Staff was really friendly too. However it is quite old and the room is really small. In addition, we were allocated a room on the top floor with very narrow stairs. With the communal bathroom and toilet downstairs, it is really not ideal for guest who needs the toilet in the middle of the...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
