I wasn't expecting much for the price I paid but had such a great stay I actually extended my stay. Initially when I went to my room I found it was next to the elevator. I immediately asked to be changed if possible. They gave me an upgrade. The hotel is in a great location with many attractions walkable and... More

We spent 3 days at the Sunroute and found it to be a great base for sightseeing, fairly spacious and offering a wonderful buffet breakfast (with a view). Close to Kiyomizu-dera, Gion and the Manga museum. Local bus right in front, 5 minutes to Kyoto station. We had both a single and double room which were about the same size.... More

This hotel lived up to all Japanese standards, clean room well supplied with comfortable bed and excellent bathroom, charming, polite, helpful staff. Very good breakfast - but unable to comment on restaurant as we ate out - would stay here again.

My partner and I found this hotel to be more roomier than that we found in Tokyo. All in all it was comfortable and the staff were pleasant. Bathroom is still quite small though which is common through Japan. It's about a 25min walk from Kyoto Station and as we are a fit couple did this a few times as... More

I stayed in 3 different hotels in Kyoto, and this room was the largest and most comfortable. The room had a couch in it in addition to the bed and desk, and it was nice to have that place to sit and relax. The hotel is a long walk from Kyoto Station, but you can also take a bus to... More

We enjoyed our stay at the Sunroute hotel. It's a little off the beaten path but actually very conveniently located to some popular shopping and eating areas and it is just a short walk to the subway station. The hotel itself is basic, but roomy, nice and clean. Staff was friendly and the little cafe attached had decent lunch options.

Restaurant is on the 10th floor: great view with your breakfast, which was very good. This is hotel is conveniently placed for shopping and Kyoto's market (a must-see). It doesn't have a spa, hot spring baths or swimming pool that I was used to in my tour of Japan but Kyoto is a lot more touristy than other places I... More

This was a standard, small hotel with small rooms of average convenience. Front desk staff had very little English, nor much advice when I tried to enquire about taxis in Japanese. Luggage left with staff before check-in is in the open so the lobby is always full of suitcases. Two pros: nice views of the river from our room, and... More

This hotel was within walking distance of Gion, Nishiki Market, and Pontocho (we're from Chicago, we walk a lot), but it was a bit far from the subway. You won't need the subway a lot (Kyoto has a very small subway system) but it is worth noting for your departure/arrival and for when you want to go see Fushimi Inari-taisha... More

The hotel is just a short walk from the Gion District which is really nice. Also, there's a bunch of great Bars and Restaurants all around the hotel. The rooms were good, nothing to complain about, good views of the surrounding area, comfy beds and good bathroom. The buffet is located on the top floor which has a spectacular view... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
