We stayed here for 4 nights during or Japan trip. The hotel is in a good location, very close to the city centre and many of the sights. The staff are very friendly and helpful and we thought our room was of a good standard. The bathroom is fine but the bath is incredibly small, they may as well have... More

Sunroute was a well-located hotel for our first two nights in Kyoto (we moved to a ryokan after this to experience something more traditional). We were able to access several sights on foot, and trains were not too far to reach when going further afield. Likewise, taxis are easy enough to get from the main road, provided it's not peak... This modern multi storey hotel offers spacious, well equipped rooms. The buffet breakfast is served on the seventh floor with a wonderful view on Kyoto: it is the occasion to taste mostly japanese breakfast dishes with some "western like" ones. The staff is very helpful. The place can be reached with a 10 minutes bus ride from the railway station.... More

We were incredibly happy with our stay. We were here the first three nights of a stay in Japan. The room was larger than most we experienced during the trip. The bed was comfortable and bathroom adequate. The staff were friendly and very helpful despite a bit of a language barrier at times. There are great restaurants within walking distance,... More

I wasn't expecting much for the price I paid but had such a great stay I actually extended my stay. Initially when I went to my room I found it was next to the elevator. I immediately asked to be changed if possible. They gave me an upgrade. The hotel is in a great location with many attractions walkable and... More

We spent 3 days at the Sunroute and found it to be a great base for sightseeing, fairly spacious and offering a wonderful buffet breakfast (with a view). Close to Kiyomizu-dera, Gion and the Manga museum. Local bus right in front, 5 minutes to Kyoto station. We had both a single and double room which were about the same size.... More

This hotel lived up to all Japanese standards, clean room well supplied with comfortable bed and excellent bathroom, charming, polite, helpful staff. Very good breakfast - but unable to comment on restaurant as we ate out - would stay here again.

My partner and I found this hotel to be more roomier than that we found in Tokyo. All in all it was comfortable and the staff were pleasant. Bathroom is still quite small though which is common through Japan. It's about a 25min walk from Kyoto Station and as we are a fit couple did this a few times as... More

I stayed in 3 different hotels in Kyoto, and this room was the largest and most comfortable. The room had a couch in it in addition to the bed and desk, and it was nice to have that place to sit and relax. The hotel is a long walk from Kyoto Station, but you can also take a bus to... More

We enjoyed our stay at the Sunroute hotel. It's a little off the beaten path but actually very conveniently located to some popular shopping and eating areas and it is just a short walk to the subway station. The hotel itself is basic, but roomy, nice and clean. Staff was friendly and the little cafe attached had decent lunch options.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
