We chose this ryokan because it was more affordable and we planned only one night. Unfortunately I found the mats and the pillows too hard for my liking, just warning others who are 5 and a half months pregnant and traveling to Kyoto! The mats were hard and the pillow was flat and about as comfy as those flimsy pillows... More

The hotel is in a great location, close to transportation, restaurants and fish market. Room is lovely Japanese style, super clean and comfortable. Beds were prepared promptly and were very comfortable. Staff was very kind and professional. We loved staying at this hotel.

I and my family's really enjoy our stay at Watazen and the dinner's and breadfast's are excellent. The best part is that, they can prepare the dinner and breadfast set to cater for non meat and seafood. Very near to Kyoto Railway station and shopping area. We will definately staying in Watazen Roykan, if we are in Kyoto again. Thanks.

Ryokan (tatami mats and bed set out in evening and packed away in morning) with an onsen in the basement and very friendly staff. The rooms were spacious and an iron provided at request too and a laundry room too. The location is excellent - in a trendy area of Kyoto close to Nishiki market and Pontocho. I recommend visiting... Watazen has traditional ryokan rooms with tatami mats and a futon rolled out at night to sleep. Unlike fancier places, they don't serve meals in the room but breakfast (including a very good Japanese breakfast for a 1000 yen supplement to the free continental breakfast) is served in the dining room. Our rooms were large and quiet with private baths.... More

Centrally located to the city centre, walking distance to the river (scenic pics) and the geisha quarters. Comfy, clean .... didn't visit the onsen downstairs, but the rooms were relatively comfy. We had to take a taxi from the train station though

We had to switched Ryokan because the one we stayed had a renovation today. The staff was very efficient checking us in at 10am and stored our luggage as the official check in is 4pm. The room was spacious, clean but a bit worn out... Quiet and convenient location!

Really interesting, authentic place to stay in Kyoto. Great location with many restaurants nearby and only a few blocks away from the Nishiki food street. Staff was very helpful as well and even helped us to book tickets for a baseball game in Osaka.

Great room huge and with its own ensuite bathroom. I didn't try the breakfast but fellow guests said it was good. Staff were charming and helpful despite the language barrier. The lovely elderly lady who runs the place came out to see us off, she was delightful.

Accommodating staff, room was pleasant and location was relatively convenient. The ryokan felt authentic and yet had modern accoutrements. Walking distance to local subway which connects a few stops to Kyoto station. Very close to excellent restaurants and shopping area of Nishiki market.

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighborhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
