Centrally located to the city centre, walking distance to the river (scenic pics) and the geisha quarters. Comfy, clean .... didn't visit the onsen downstairs, but the rooms were relatively comfy. We had to take a taxi from the train station though

We had to switched Ryokan because the one we stayed had a renovation today. The staff was very efficient checking us in at 10am and stored our luggage as the official check in is 4pm. The room was spacious, clean but a bit worn out... Quiet and convenient location!

Really interesting, authentic place to stay in Kyoto. Great location with many restaurants nearby and only a few blocks away from the Nishiki food street. Staff was very helpful as well and even helped us to book tickets for a baseball game in Osaka.

Great room huge and with its own ensuite bathroom. I didn't try the breakfast but fellow guests said it was good. Staff were charming and helpful despite the language barrier. The lovely elderly lady who runs the place came out to see us off, she was delightful.

Accommodating staff, room was pleasant and location was relatively convenient. The ryokan felt authentic and yet had modern accoutrements. Walking distance to local subway which connects a few stops to Kyoto station. Very close to excellent restaurants and shopping area of Nishiki market.

Stayed at this hotel in Kyoto, Japan, for a vacation with the family. The hotel has excellent staff that speak English well enough to communicate and are extremely accommodating. The location is within walking distance to all that Kyoto is famous for or within the bus route. Very family friendly.

Watazen Ryokan is conveniently situated in historic Kyoto. The room was spacious and the service was very good. We stayed for 2 nights and booked dinner for both, which I regretted a bit. The dinner itself was gorgeous and the ryokan kindly provided a different option for my daughter who is a picky eater. However, having a kaiseki dinner for... More

We checked in at 7.30 pm, the last period of dinner to be served in our room. The staffs were really helpful, they showed us to our room, briefly told us how to use hotel's facilities, prepared dinner (which was a set of 10 or more dishes kaiseki style) in our room, and right after dinner, our futon beds were... We wanted to experience the traditional accommodation in Japan including the meal. We ordered KAISEKI dinner sets and was amazed with the varieties. It would be great if the service staff is able to explain the dishes clearly and the correct sequence to enjoy. We were basically putting the food in our mouth continuously without any product knowledge.

My wife and I wanted to try the Ryokan experience so we opted for Watazen as the prices were reasonable and the location was stellar. Service overall was very good from the front desk to the room keepers. They made tea for us when we got there and were very accommodating during our two days. The location is truly amazing... More

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighborhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
