This was my second time staying at Watazen. My experience this time, not as good as I remembered. Watazen is in a good location. Close to Gion. From train stations, it's about 10 mins walk from two stations. You can walk to Gion if you like , where a lot of things are happening . Hotel itself is pretty basic....

This was such a lovely hotel! It was walking distance to the Nishiki Market and all cab drivers know this ryokan so you won't have trouble getting here in a taxi. It is comparable in price to a regular hotel in a big metropolitan area but the experience is so much better. The tatami mats, the complimentary tea when you...

The location is very convenient to bus stop and metro station. This Ryokan also close to a lot of attraction places. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We really enjoy the open bath and prepared meal here. It is our first and great ryokan experience in Japan.

It was my first time in Japan and my first time in a ryokan and I had a great time. The staff was very helpful and they made me feel at ease and helped me a lot whenever I needed it. I truly felt I had a real Japanese experience.

Watazen ryoken was a terrific experience. The staff was very helpful and accommodating as we arrived early they held our luggage and transferred to our room. We enjoyed the location, being close to the shopping district, subways and buses. If we get a chance to visit Kyoto again, it is definitely on our"stay" list.

Check-in was fast and efficient, though check-in time is only at 4pm. Stayed in Japanese-style room with private bathroom. Spacious, clean, excellent. Best stay during my Japan trip. Rooms are not sound-proof I guess, since I could hear people and the TV from next door. Chose to have my meals included, breakfast and dinner. Highly recommend this option as you'll...

My 17 year old daughter and I enjoyed a wonderful 2 nights and 3 days in Kyoto with Ryokan Watazen as a base of operations. Watazen is well-located near Nishiki market, all sorts of shopping and restaurants, the train and a short walk to Gion district. We very much enjoyed the relaxing robes (yukata) provided by Watazen and loved the...

It was wonderful experience. Every hotel crew were friendly. It remains as very pleasant memory. However, I think it could be better experience, if they can use English a bit more. The crew who served dining was not able to speak English, even though she had very delightful attitude.

Watazen Ryokan is such a great place to stay in if visiting Kyoto. We booked room packages that come with dinner served in your room. They have what they call the "F-Kaiseki" dinner (a multiple course dinner; "F" for foreign; the kaiseki dinner is tailored a bit to suit foreigner palate), or a shabu-shabu (hot pot) dinner, both of which...

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighborhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
