Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. The vicinity was serene and the hotel was quiet. The rooms were quite spacious and clean. The food was very very delicious. For us, it was quite a memorable stay.

Top notch customer service - staff was incredibly friendly and warm. Getting to experience a traditional ryokan was definitely one of the highlights of our entire trip to Japan. We truly enjoyed the private baths, breakfast in our room and having a kaiseki dinner in the room as well.

Nice location. Friendly, efficient staff. Sizable and quiet room for 3 people. Shared showers and hot bath are nice and well managed. Overall, a pleasant, simple, low-key way to get the Ryokan experience. Only minor suggestion would be to have the in-room mirror and vanity lighting a bit brighter and more convenient to use.

Recently stayed for two nights. Truly wonderful, welcoming and hospitable-- a great Ryokan experience. The location is also terrific for visiting some of Kyoto's best shrines and temples. Highly recommend the Japanese breakfast. Would go back.

Everyone there was helpful, kind, and considerate. The food was beyond great and gave us the opportunity to try something beyond sushi. I'll do more yoga before my next stay. Sitting on the floor all the time was hard. The location was great-near sites and near the river for running.

Really reccomended: very kind staff, Amazing japanese dinner, perfect location in higashiyama. Medium/High price, however it is justified by the quality of the service. To live the real Japan go to Motonago

We really enjoyed our stay at this ryokan. Everyone was extremely accommodating (the amazing Japanese hospitality you would expect), and I was a bit nervous about not knowing a word of Japanese but we had no issues communicating with the staff. The room is very clean and comfortable - we were saying how the Japanese futon from this ryokan was...

I found Motonago through TripAdvisor. We would like to experience authentic ryokan in Japan at least one night. Motonago is situated in a quiet part of Gion. It’s located near many sights, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Ichinen-zaka and Ninen-zaka, Higashiyama District, Kodaiji The surroundings of the ryokan bring us back to the old Kyoto, the interior of the ryokan making it a...

The staff at Motonago were very attentive and patient; helping us with all our queries, from booking the hotel itself to the private booking of the shower and hot tub facilities. Everywhere and everything was clean and tidy. Including shared bathrooms and shower facilities. The kaiseiki for dinner was super yummy and so was the Japanese breakfast - all served...

Saw some recommendations on trip blogs for this Ryokan and decided to book a night with them. No regrets. Upon entry, we were greeted by the staff as though we were distinguished visitors. Staff were friendly and conversant in English. The Ryokan is conveniently located within walking distance to Kodaiji and Kiyomizu-dera. We were constantly 'wow-ed' by the authentic experience...

Motonago hospitality With Kyoto flavor a homy feeling. Motonago nestles in a quiet, nostalgic scene, completely apart from the hustle and bustle of the city. Once you step outside, you can sense the overflowing taste of Kyoto - Japan's old capital. All the charm of Kyoto is gathered here, where Motonago stands. On entering through a door with a tiled roof while seeing a tasteful earthen wall made using traditional techniques, Motonago welcomes you with a warm hospitality that only a humble inn like ours, with its 11 rooms, can offer. Guests can relax while enjoying dinner and breakfast in their rooms, and our staff wear traditional kimonos as they serve the meals.
