When we arrived the staff at the reception told us the place was under renovation so the actual place where we stayed was on another house. Not a bad place thought but I wish I had been informed of this and could have seen pictures before booking. It's a traditional style place with a nice garden at the entrance. It's... More

This hotel was overall pretty good. The food was actually good and decent. I read reviews that it wasn't that great, but I actually enjoyed it. I ate twice here... it is kind of far from everything, so we had to use wifi at the hotel to find our ways before leaving the hotel. Taking buses and trains here were... More

After 2 long visits in Japan staying in different hotels (including a lovely ryokan in Nagano) this place was so bad that even having booked for a week, we decided to move to another place. The location is far enough from center and main sightseeings in the city and the timetable for buses is not comfortable. The so called "ryokan"... More

The garden spaces were beautiful, it was clean, the food was delicious and the staff were very hospitable and helpful! They will hold on to your luggage if you arrive before check in time. It is a very walkable distance from Ninna-ji, Ryoan-ji, Kinkaju-ji and Kamishichiken (and probably many other lovely places we personally didn't have time to experience!), otherwise... More

The place is rather out of the way and would be difficult for people with bulky luggage to travel to. A staff member is able to speak English and the rest, not. That being said, the air in the area is exceptionally fresh and the surroundings are beautiful seeing lush greenery in the area and the surrounding hills. The rooms... More

I simply got out of the room to go to the bathroom. I come back - i locked it like there are many strangers - and the door wont open! So i come down to the reception and NOBODY answers - oh in the cold with a thin kimono pijama kinda like. I mean, there is a free computer here... More

We booked a room with a shared bathroom, which we were fine with. However we were not told the bathroom was out in the car park. On the second night there was no hot water and we had to have freezing cold showers. This place is also a long way from anything. There is a JR bus stop 100 m... More

I have been to many ryokans and I will say this…Yamazaki Rokan is "you get what you pay for". Obviously many people come here due to the lower prices but in my opinion, this place is not worth it at all. If you want real ryokan experience, go big or go home. This place is nestled in the country side;... More

Room and private ensuite is huge. Room is tidy, clean and having everything you need. The surroundings are perfect with country style environment, especially seeing a creek with perfect clean water flowing from the windows. Even though the food quality in the restaurant is just average but overall experience is way over my expectation.

I booked this ryokan based on Tripadvisor reviews and ... I shouldn't have. Pricy, dirty and far from Kyoto central. The only good point was the Internet connexion. Also, although we booked a double bed-room, they gave us a twin bed room. Don't go,this is a trap.

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighborhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
