Fantastic budget hotel. We had a 5 bed futon room for 3 and it was very very spacious and futons very comfortable. Great Western lounge and Japanese lounge... Staff cannot do enough to help you. Great information book in each room giving great amount of detail for day trips, restaurants etc. Cannot recommend enough!

I stayed at this hostel as a couple but opted for the private double room with private bathroom instead of the shared rooms. This brings in the best of both worlds with a private accommodation and the opportunity to meet other travellers in the common rooms. It's located about 10 minutes from Kyoto station by walking, but keep in mind... More

Great location within walking distance to Kyoto station. We did stay in a room with bathroom and there are common facilities such as kitchen with a fridge, living room, locker and laundry. No problem with communication as owners speak English. Overall, great budget accommodation.

Fantastic beds, they really feel like a little room of your own and if the light is turned on at 5am .....you don't even notice. Lockers are massive, there is a USB and universal plug in every bed, they have a good space for heating up food making tea/socializing, the staff were super friendly and helpful ( they even gave... If you're looking for a place from which you can easily access all the interesting things in Kyoto and around, this is the place. It's walking distance from the train station and bus terminal, so anywhere you need to go is close. There's a local onsen and quite a few restaurants as well as supermarkets around. The owner speaks english... More

This was our first time staying in a hostel--we are a family of 4---2 adults, an 8 year old, and an 11 year old. We booked it over more expensive options because the reviews were so good, yet we were still nervous about what a hostel would be like with kids and middle aged adults. They only had a 3... More

We stayed in a Japanese style room which was quite comfortable and large. There were good facilties in the room with a bath shower and cupboard space. The futons weren't that comfortable but as we didn't stay in another Japanese room we can't compare them with any others. The best thing about this hostel, though, was the communual area with... Good on budget. Centrally located easy access to trains and buses in the middle of Kyoto. Get used to the tiny washroom though. The staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They have kimono and setting for you to do a DIY Japanese photo

Value for money and then some. Extremely convenient location: 10 min. walk from Kyoto Station. There were spacious lockers, so you could leave your belongings without any worries, and the room temperature was very comfortable. There is a manual in the hostel with all the sightseeing and food-tips you could possibly ask for, the guests could try some Japanese sake... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
