This small hostel is well known as one of the best Sake tasting places in Kioto. It's situated close to Gion and Pontocho. It's really clean and the staff is really cool. The best is the bar where you can taste different sake. Really good!

The rooms are fine and normal compared to other hostels. Size, bathrooms and beds all okay. The beds are pretty comfortable. I like the balcony in the room I was in. I really liked having a sake bar downstairs with a computer for our use. The common room is really small as others wrote but I looked at the bar...

Nice hostel in an excellent location!! Staff is really nice and helpfull. The only minus is that there's no hang out place so you wont't really meet many new people. But as i was traveling with a friend of mine that was no problem. Would recommend!

Value for money. A very reasonable price for the location. The hostel is clean. There are two showers and one bathroom. One of the showers did keep getting blocked whilst in the shower however the water receded eventually. Towels have to be rented. There a coin washing/drying machine. The location is quite central. If you are/have bought a JR pass...

We went here for a sake tasting as part of a small tour. Excellent tasting of three varieties of sake with great explanations. The owner is this wonderful lady who speaks great English. She is well-traveled and enjoyed shared memories of her trips with us and learning more about our countries, while answering questions about Japanese culture and sake making....

I previously stayed at jam for 3 nights while visiting Kyoto- Jam hostel has an amazing location right in the geisha district, it's a short stroll from everything you want- food, drinks, shops, temples etc- and there's a train station right out the front! The rooms are nice, clean and comfortable- I stayed in a mix 6 bed dorm. The...

Great location. The owner of the hostel owns her own sake bar below the hostel (which worked out pretty nicely), like most hostels in Japan its extremely clean, soft white sheets, very well maintained. Its right in the heart of the Gion district and you could not ask for a better location in terms of buses and subway access to...

The hostel is located at a very good place inside of the Gion district. First of all the staff is very friendly and it is possible to store your luggage here before checking in and after checking out. We chose to stay in a private room which was of decent size and very clean. There are enough facilities to provide...

Staying in Gion

Neighborhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
