Very small rooms, but well laid out, clean and comfortable. At first I thought there was no AC but it was just sort of hidden. I really enjoy the novelty of using a real metal key to turn on the electricity in the room. Good bathroom amenities. Very slow elevator, so don't be afraid to duck into the stairs which... More

We stayed here for one night on an overnight trip to Kyoto. On first impression we were wow-ed by how minimalist the hotel looked. We booked the Twin with Terrace room. The room is huge with a separate bathroom. The management of this hotel really thought about all the little amenities provided for their guests. We love the hotel even... More

Too hyped for what this is. I stayed in a single room for 4 nights on a business + leisure trip to Japan in June 2016. The hotel is in a convenient but very quiet location, just one metro stop south of Kyoto station - 10 min walk. Good bus connections to temples and other attractions too. Anteroom bills itself... I stayed at the Anteroom hotel in April 2015 and found it to be modern and convenient. The location is a 5-10 minute walk to the metro station. In addition, there is a bus stop 5 minutes away as well. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious and adapted to my requirements as a vegetarian. The hotel is... More

We stayed here for 3 nights in June and were placed in a semi-double room. This is a misnomer for it is in reality a single room with barely enough room for 2 people on a very small bed. The windows are opaque so you cannot see outside. The carpeting is worn, stained, and dirty. The bathroom is barely large... More

A new concept based on a cultural expo lounge with live music, bar and of course a Hotel. The rooms are quite good (bearing in mind that you are in Japan, please do not confuse with European or US hotels and sizes) quite, clean and well equipped. The breakfast is as simple as two hand-made on time sandwiches, juice, salad... More

This was a fine (and very affordable) hotel in which to spend 4 nights. Don't choose it if you're looking to be in the middle of all Kyoto has to offer--public transit or a minimum 30-minute walk is required to get to anything you've probably come to see. It's definitely a locals' hotel--Western/English-speaking tourists needing extensive assistance or hoping to... More

I quite liked the interesting arty angle the hotel had - the design of the rooms was also cool. However, not that friendly and there was an issue with the dry cleaning - the dry cleaner they use couldn't clean a particular item, which was fine but they didn't bother cleaning the other items that we wanted cleaning. They just... More

I spent a couple nights at the Hotel Anteroom during peak cherry blossom season. It was literally the only affordable option left in Kyoto at the time, and it turned out to be quite a pleasant stay! The hotel has a little bit of an arty vibe to it. Staff was friendly and helpful. Check in and check out went... More

This is not your standard Kyoto hotel, with a hard loft feel and contemporary art in the lobby. I really enjoyed my stay here. The breakfasts are healthy and filling, the staff are helpful, and the rooms are comfortable. The location isn't very exciting, but it's a 400m walk to the subway, which links you to everything. Also, there are... More

Staying in Southern Kyoto

Neighborhood Profile
Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.
