Super helpful and informative people in Jiyujin. Whenever you leave the guesthouse, they will ask what we did yesterday and will provide helpful information on where are the must go places and how to go. Oh and they do speak english! They also sell a one day bus/train pass over their counter and their location is just 5min away from...

Brilliant. Extremely friendly hosts. They could not have been more helpful or polite. Very clear instructions on how to get there from the train. Can even rent a bike. If we visited Kyoto again would use. Rooms clean with air con. Good range of maps and activities on offer too.

Highly recommend Jiyu-jin to any travellers looking for somewhere basic but clean, quiet and friendly to stay. I can't stress enough how nice the staff here were! They were extra friendly and really helpful, telling us about festivals and events going on in the area, transportation and how to get to sightseeing spots. They provide loads of maps and info...

Jiyujin was everything that I could have hoped for in a hostel, and was actually better than a hotel in a lot of ways. The staff was great and very helpful, and that place was extremely clean and organized. There are plenty of bathrooms, a great open kitchen for anyone to use, and laundry facilities for 100 yen per load....

Stayed here for 3 nights. What a pleasant experience staying here. Friendly and helpful staff, showed me how to get to my destination by bus (in which Kyoto's bus is really confusing to ride). Practiced my self-taught Japanese language with one of the staff. Even it is only a guesthouse, they really show the "omotenashi" spirit in every way they...

I went there with two friends, so they gave us our own Japanese style room (mattress in the floor). It was really clean, really confortable, the heat worked perfectly and the staff were ridiculously nice. The baths were very clean, but if you go in high season i don´t think there will be enough for so many people. Location was...

Stayed at Jiyu-jin for three nights. It's one of the nicest places I've been to in Japan. Especially because of the very nice and extremely helpful staff. They really try to make your stay as pleasant and convenient as possible. They gave good recommendations for restausrants, sights, public transport. Location is good, close to subway and Kyoto station. Enjoyed my...

Jiyujin was one of our favourite hostels. It was a hostel with a mature age group and everyone was friendly and approachable. They facilities was exceptionally clean and beds were comfortable. They even had a bathroom which had a bathtub for us to soak in if we had the time. It was a home away from home.

I came here as a 17 year old with a friend and we met some nice people here. The location is handy - a 10 minute walk from train station, and main shops. The staff were so sweet, helpful and friendly; the accommodation itself was very clean despite it being a hot and sticky summer - just what we needed....

I stayed here for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The staff at Jiyu-jin are incredibly helpful, kind, and accommodating. One night I lost my passport in Kyoto, Sayaka gave me a good luck charm, and a few hours later I was retrieving my passport from the Koban at Kyoto Station. The facilities are clean and spacious, and I would...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
