Stayed at Jiyu-jin for three nights. It's one of the nicest places I've been to in Japan. Especially because of the very nice and extremely helpful staff. They really try to make your stay as pleasant and convenient as possible. They gave good recommendations for restausrants, sights, public transport. Location is good, close to subway and Kyoto station. Enjoyed my... More

Jiyujin was one of our favourite hostels. It was a hostel with a mature age group and everyone was friendly and approachable. They facilities was exceptionally clean and beds were comfortable. They even had a bathroom which had a bathtub for us to soak in if we had the time. It was a home away from home.

I came here as a 17 year old with a friend and we met some nice people here. The location is handy - a 10 minute walk from train station, and main shops. The staff were so sweet, helpful and friendly; the accommodation itself was very clean despite it being a hot and sticky summer - just what we needed.... More

I stayed here for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The staff at Jiyu-jin are incredibly helpful, kind, and accommodating. One night I lost my passport in Kyoto, Sayaka gave me a good luck charm, and a few hours later I was retrieving my passport from the Koban at Kyoto Station. The facilities are clean and spacious, and I would... More

I stayed here for 3 days and I just want to say that the staff are very helpful and informative so I had a wonderful time here. I had to stay overnight at the airport so I asked the staff if I could use their bathroom after I have checked out. Initially they said no because will be a full... More

I created an account for this review. The room size is decent. However, the customer review is superbly awesome. Very friendly. Always willing to have a chat. It is shame that i do not know japanese so i had to rely on my brother to converse with them.

Out of all the hostels/guesthouses I've stayed during my 3 week trip this one has stuck with me the most. I stayed here for 9 days and had a great time with the other travelers and the staff here. The rooms are not large, but they're fine if you just need a nice and clean place to stay the night.... More

I usually don't stay in hostels but I loved this one. I had my own room, clean, simple, the hostel is not big so you don't really share the bathroom with too many people. Which is good. The staff is amazing, extremely helpful, and a great location to move around kyoto. They also rent bikes for half price of the... More

This is a good budget option for accommodation whilst in Kyoto. It has a good central location in the city and sights overall. It is around a twenty minute walk from kyoto station. The rooms and general areas are all spotless and the staff are excellent and extremely friendly. The showers are also very clean although there is only one... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
