This is a great hotel to stay at for a family. Our family of 4 was able to stay in one room. 2 adults on a king bed which could have fit 3 of us easily and 2 futons on tatami mats. The hotel is a 5-10 minute walk from Kyoto station but because it is in an alley small... More

Quit expensive but very comfortable room in up to date styling. The beds are huge and very comfortable and the location is great close to Kyoto station. The free e-bikes are a treat and Kyoto is excellent to explore by bike even when it is hot. Breakfast is okay but nothing special

We stayed at Kanra Kyoto for 3 nights. It is an excellent hotel with wonderful staff in a terrific location. The rooms/beds are extremely comfortable. There is a 7-11 next door. We went to a restaurant one block away that makes homemade soba noodles that was very good. We would definitely stay there again. It is a terrific hotel.

This small unique Hotel is simple and graceful with rooms that are both extremely comfortable which include touches of Japanese elegance. The staff were just lovely in every way. I have never felt so warmly received and looked after. They made excellent suggestions in both dining and sightseeing. I highly recommend this Hotel - the location, the staff, the rooms... More

A stunning modern ryokan (sort of) near Kyoto station with warm service. We enjoyed our 3 nights so much that it went by so fast! The hotel is about a 10 mins walk from Kyoto station but right next door to a beautiful shrine (so the walking seems short) and conveniently located near a 7 eleven. The hotel beds were... More

This is a great place. Seems newly remodeled and has a great Japanese feel to the rooms - mat floors, sliding paper walls, great shower and tub. Definitely not like a big hotel chain. Very comfortable and big beds. The location was great (5 minute walk from Kyoto station and right next to the Gojo subway stop). And the staff... More

I would recommend and stay here again purely for the excellent location (downtown - accessible to all shops and restaurants, and out from there), and the lovely decadent finishings. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the rooms were small, i.e. 2 suitcases between 2 people made it hard to manoeuvre around the room. That said -... More

The hotel interior, especially the twin guest room we stayed in, is nice. At 29 rooms, it's definitely boutique. The staff is very nice. The hotel is an interior rehab of a rather dumpy-looking building at the exterior (once you look elsewhere beyond the lovely entry). Expect no views. My biggest issue is probably the location. It is not as... More

I've always wanted to stay in a ryokan yet I was fearful that I could not comfortably sleep in a futon mattress. This modern ryokan hotel dispelled my fears. The 2 queen mattresses placed atop a wooden bed frame were extremely comfortable to sleep in. The pillows though small were also soft. I had no problem sleeping at all. The... More

Room booked: Deluxe Room In a sentence, this hotel is exactly that. It has all the comforts you expect of a luxury hotel - the decor was modern and importantly, there was a nice and soft mattress. However, it also incorporates elements of a ryokan - there was a tatami sitting area; the service was warm and personalized; there was... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
