Lovely staff - they honestly could not have done any more for us. Cool hotel, easy walk to main train station and subway with luggage, one of the best showers you will ever have. Would absolutely stay again, if only for the gorgeous smell when you walk in and upstairs coffee area.

We enjoyed our 3 night stay at Hotel Kanra. It's located in a quieter area of town but only a few steps from Gojo Station or a straight 15min walk to Kyoto Station. The staff were friendly, professional & accommodating. Sakura helped us with check in & she tried her best to attend to our request of foam pillows &...

The rooms are lovely. Modern yet Japanese. Loved the bath... Rooms: are large by any standard. There is a theme for the rooms and hotel. I would describe it as "modern Japanese" [whatever that means] So you have all the mod cons but with the localised feel! Clean, of course. Love the toilet seats.... Service: There are no doormen, concierges...

Beautiful design hotel. The hotel welcomed you with a pleasant smell of wood. Very friendly staff who helped us to book taxi and give good advice for sightseeing places. The hotel is super clean. Room is spacious and they also provided yakuta for adults and kids. We loved the wooden bathtub and the bathroom design. It's only 10 minutes walk...

Beautiful Japanese/western style hotel . Lovely rooms and bathroom. We had a deluxe room for 2 adults and 2 teenagers and it was a little cramped but we usually stay in 2 rooms. We loved the design and style of the hotel. The front desk were very helpful. We used the complimentary electric bikes and that was a fantastic way to...

First, I should note that, based on updates to Hotel Kanra Kyoto’s Web site, it appears that the hotel has undergone a renovation since my wife and I stayed there last year. I’ll focus my review on aspects of our stay that I believe, based on their Web site, will be consistent with our experience. For starters, we very much...

We recently stayed at Hotel Kanra, and had a fantastic time. The hotel is well located about 10 minutes walk from the main Kyoto Rail Station. The staff were very helpful, recommending and booking restaurants, cycle hire, places to see and where to go and what to do. We were with another family from Wellington, who had stayed at Kanra...

The hotel was just awesome. I regret spending only one night here and will stay here on my trip out to Kyoto every time. The hotel is located centrally but on a quiet street. The lobby is beautiful and the staff super kind and courteous. The room is a good size considering it's an Asian hotel and the bedding was...

Stayed 3 nights in January. The rooms are modern and new. Bathrooms are modern and clean. Sound insulation appears quite good between rooms. But most of all, the staff at the front desk was truly exceptional. From check-in they were extremely engaging and helpful. They helped us with restaurant reservations, directions, and getting oriented. Then one of my friends lost...

My visit in Kyoto will be memorable because of this Hotel. I loved it. The staff are extremely customer focused. I had two occasions where two staff members at Shop Kanra went above and beyond. IN fact the whole staff provide excellent customer service. If you want to buy a small Bonsai tree--to have a little piece of Japan to...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
