My husband and I stayed here for two nights to try out an authentic Japanese style hotel. The hotel is in such a convenient location to the train station and downtown. They even let you rent out electric bicycles which is a nice way to get around the city. As it was our honeymoon, the staff gave us a welcome... More

Really impressed! Just stayed there and really happy we choose this hotel. Our room was massive, bed was super comfy and huge- futon style yet with a modern twist. Bathroom had both a shower and a Japanese wood soaking tub and the overall elegance and modern twist was well done. The front desk/ concierge could not have been any kinder... More

Enjoyed our stay at Kanra Hotel it is located in a great position walking distance from Kyoto main station. They are just about to open a new wing to the hotel. The rooms are spacious and the bed is enormous and comfortable the cedar bath is great and gives the bathroom a nice aroma. We ate at the Resturant one... More

This is a cool contemporary hotel with rooms showing traditional Japanese living updated. We loved it!! We thought it was perfect for our 20 year anniversary celebration. The bed was so large it could fit 4-6 adults comfortably. ha ha. We were just 2. The wooden soaking tub was awesome, and the rainfall showerhead was nice. The Japanese breakfast was... More

We recently spent 4 nights at this excellent hotel. We had a top floor suite which had an outdoor soaking tub and a deck to hang out on - both amazing and well used during our stay. Our room faced the back of the hotel and overlooked a quiet residential neighborhood. We had dinner one night in the hotel restaurant... More

The star of the show is the room - a cool contemporary take on the traditional Japanese style. Front of desk staff very friendly and helpful and (international style food) room service was surprisingly good. Otherwise we didn't use the restaurant as reviews of breakfast were not good and there was a distinct lack of ambience in the evening (plus... More

Lovely hotel with spacious and well appointed rooms. The staff was terrific. My only criticism was that the breakfast could have been better with more choices and a wider variety of fruit and buffet items beyond the two selections of American or Japanese plated breakfasts. The location is convenient to the subway and the train station but nothing of interest... More

Hotel Kanra is situated at a narrow alley just off a main street. Staff are very friendly and many speak good English. Hotel restaurant also offers interesting menu at reasonable prices. Location is very convenient, just 10 minutes walk from Kyoto station, and subway entrance is just at the corner. The Higashi Honganji - a key Buddhist temple is just... More

Pros: the hotel is located near Kyoto station and literally steps away from one of the subway lines; the staff are simply the nicest, most helpful people you could ask for; the rooms are quiet and comfortable, with nice amenities. Cons: the breakfast selection is just OK.

Modern, clean & friendly. Reception speak excellent English and are very helpful. Walking distance from Kyoto station with hand luggage. There is a 7-eleven next door which is useful as Japanese ATMs don't take international cards - but those in 7-elevens do! There is a Baskin Robbins, Starbucks & Mc Donald's also walking distance. Breakfast has a small buffet &... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
