Really friendly and helpful staff with great English. We stayed in a twin room (traditional: thin mattress on the tatami floor which took a little getting used to) with ensuite. The common area in the hostel was quite small and when there was more than 2 in the kitchen area space was tight. The walls between rooms are paper thin... More

This would be the third time I have stayed in Kyoto Hana Hostel. It is the one place I try to book into when I visit Kyoto. This time it was so much fun because Christmas Eve the staff had a party that we were able to join in. The staff had prepared food and also had sparkling wine to... More

We choose this hostel due to its close proximity to Kyoto Station. Getting to the hostel was hassle free. Just follow the map provided and tada, Kyoto Hana Hostel. Upon checking in, we were given 300 yen discount for a 3 night stay. The private tatami room that we were put into is no different from a Ryokan. It has... More

I've stayed here twice, once in 2011 and once in 2015. Both times have been lovely! The staff are always super friendly. They have bike rentals which is great as cycling is a perfect way to explore Kyoto. The location is amazing, you pretty much walk out, turn the corner and there's restaurants, convenience stores, bakeries, THE BEST Yodobashi in... More

This hostel is a great value - room was clean, cozy and warm. Tatami mat was extremely comfortable! Staffs were friendly and helpful. Good location to the Kyoto main station (about 8 min walk), convenient store and restaurants nearby. Free Wifi available but not stable in the room. If only they also provided a lift in the hostel, it would... More

The bed is comfortable with enough space. Hana is not far from Kyoto station, cheap restaurant and convenient store, easy to take transportation and find food. Also, the great staff will give you any help you need.

I enjoy staying in Hana hostel. I've stayed in all four of their branches in Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka and Hiroshima. All Hana hostels share some great characteristics. You can't go wrong with Hana hostel. Good location. Short walk to train station. Complete amenities with proper kitchen and cooking facilities, coin laundry, dryer, TV and computers in the common areas, free... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
