I brought my parents to stay for 4 nights but tried different rooms. I personally really like it. But for my dad who has knee problem, it's better to stay at ground floor rooms. The wifi on the second floor was not strong but it doesn't matter too much, because you can easily to buy SIM card in Japan. The... More

Very traditional ryokan, the staff said this house probably 100 over years old. The only way to access this ryokan is by bus. Simply take bus 206 from anywhere. However you require to walk about 10mins from bus stop to the house. It is very clean and has everything you need. I was struck down by fever on my 3rd... More

We stayed here 4 nights in January and had a wonderful time. The ryokan is tucked away in a neighborhood a little far from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kyoto (about a 45 minute bus ride or a 20 minute cab). But surrounding area is very picturesque and noted a number of sites within walking distance (Golden Temple, Funaoka... More

If you would like to experience traditional machiya(町家) this is the place you should visit. The nishijin 西陣 area is exactly what I think the taste of kyoto. kingyoya staff are so welcoming and friendly, thank you Yumiko,Yuki and Jumbo. The music they played perfectly matches the atmosphere and the architect. I will definitely come again.

Location was hard to find, I got lost trying to find the guesthouse, passages in Japan looked alike especially when it was already dark. However the place had an excellent traditional japanese atmosphere. The bed was super comfy. It was located not far from a 24h convenience store. Personnel were kind and helpful

My stay at Kingyoya was great. I slept in women's dormitory. Hotel can be easily reached by the bus from Central Station. I loved the calm atmoshpere, nice Japanese garden, delicious breakfasts, helpful staff. I want to stay there again in the future!

We fell in love with this ryokan at first sight. It is very tastefully decorated and has a homely atmosphere. The house itself is very traditional (this means thin walls, but earplugs are provided free of charge). There is a lovely zen garden where you can spend some relaxing moments while surfing the internet on the computer provided outside. Barley... More

We had a pleasant stay in the luxury room. The atmosphere is very "authentic" and the staff are extremely friendly. They respond quickly to emails, which was most helpful on several occasions. Breakfast is delicious. Internet works perfectly. You can rent bikes from the hosts for a very reasonable price. As noted by earlier guests, the walls are made of... More

I booked a twin room in Guesthouse Kingyoya after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor. And I wasn't disappointed. The house is old but well-maintained, and I loved the feeling of being in a traditional Kyoto machiya. We followed the instructions on the access map on the Kingyoya site and found no problems finding the place. The room was a little... More

This house is very traditional with a lovely garden. It is a good sample for who wants to experience Japanese traditional house. However, I booked for 3 nights but stayed 2 nights only, I felt annoyed as I could hear other rooms' noise but other people might not feel the same. It is convenient location to visit Golden Temple but... More

Staying in Nishijin District

Neighborhood Profile
Nishijin District
A district with a long textile heritage, ancient Kyoto is still alive in the Nishijin District. Studded with its weaving factories, tea houses, and onsen, the neighborhood is charming and peaceful with a self-possessed air. Less traveled than other parts of the city, it is a district where you can take it at your own pace. Visitors can explore the many weaving and cloth houses, the free kimono shows, and the many shops selling traditional clothing and goods. Showcasing architecture with sloping roofs and wooden reliefs dating to decades past, the streets in the Nishijin District transport you back in time, making them a joy to wander.
