It is a convenient 10-minute walk to the train station, few minutes walk to bus 205 for Kinkakuji (Golden Temple), and to bus 206 for Gion. For me location is critical when choosing a place. Here I found a great host and facilities, clean and comfortable. I truly appreciated the well done and thoughtful information and recommendations booklet provided, I... More

The hotel is located about 10 minutes walk form the main station. I've been there 5 days during my trip in Japan with family. We got a romm for three, the room is simple, but everything is new and clean. In order to keep fares low they don't clean the bath every day, but they did it just ones. No... More

I stayed in private room for 2 nights in September. It is only 5-10 min walk to Kyoto station in a quiet-ish part of town (and the streets are pretty safe with people walking around even at 11 PM). The room was small but had everything I needed - small toilet, shower, basin, large TV, air-conditioner/heater, kettle, 2 towels, shower... More

Great value for money. Hotel is centrally located. Very friendly staff. Hotel was very clean. Complimentary tea and coffee downstairs. Able to use washing machine and tumble dryer for a small fee. Only downside was the hotel room was a little small.

We stayed here for 2 days 1 night for our brief vacation in Kyoto. First thing that impressed me was: their staffs are very fluent in English. They will let you leave your baggage for free if the room is not available yet. Luckily for us, the room is available so he let us check-in already even though it's just... More

My husband and I stayed at the Capsule Ryokan for a few days in August 2016. The staff members are very helpful. The rooms are rather small (hence the term "capsule"...) but clean and air-conditionned... which turns out extremely useful during hot August summer days / nights. If you're looking for a well-located, clean and unexpensive hotel: this is the... More

We were a group of 3 adults and 4 kids, spread out over 4 of the tatami rooms. They are really well-designed spaces, with comfy beds, great aircon, futuristic Japanese toilets and awesome showers in each room. Capsule Ryokan is good value for money, and we got great service from all the friendly staff. Appreciated being able to borrow items... More

Super Nice and helpful staff with an excellent English spoken. Great room for a couple and we slept sooooo well on large futons (it's quite unusual to have good size bed in Japan). To summerize: Perfect.

These place is wonderful and special. It has everything that you need and the staff is super kind. They helped us in everything that we needed. We slept in a private room and in a capsule one night. Both experiences were very nice. There are many details in the rooms and in the capsule that make the stay great :)

This is our third or fourth time staying in Capsule Ryokan Kyoto. In fact we never consider staying anywhere else when we visit Kyoto. The ryokan is wonderful for all the reasons that have been posted in reviews all these years. However, good short term accommodations are plentiful in Kyoto so what makes Capsule Ryokan Kyoto special and so well... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
