I reserved this ryokan on jalan and found a deal. The catch was I will be assigned whichever room that did not sell. I went for it because this ryokan was still by far the least expensive on Ishibe Alley.
We checked in at 5 pm and were led to the room of the night. It was 6 tatami in size. We were then introduced to the amenities such as shower and bath. Shower was ok till late but bath closed at 7:30 pm. There were 2 shower/bath rooms. Yukata and towels were provided.
The futons were ok but the walls were very thin. I could hear snoring from the neighbors. I heard people returning late at night too. Things to consider if you are a light sleeper.
Breakfast was served in the room. Staff was very nice and sweet. A traditional Japanese breakfast was served. It had salmon, rice, natto, tsukemono and miso soup. Coffee was served after the whole meal.
A movie director stayed at this ryokan before. A TV drama had been filmed here also. I asked the staff and was shown...

We booked for 3 nights, and stayed for two, and even regretted that. When we asked to leave early, we were punished for that by being charged 50% of the third night's room rate. We cannot find it possible to recommend the property when there are so many other options in Kyoto.

Our impressions? While the staff were lovely, in spite of having no english language, the rooms were tired, bedding smelled of cigarette smoke (we requested no smoking), and no bathroom. Letter usually not a problem in ryokan, except that this was a very expensive stay, and at the price a simple private bathroom facility would be expected. Breakfasts were tradtional Japanese fare and very fresh, and filling. There were nice Japanese hot tubs too. But the breakfast, tubs and staff could not overcome our feelings of disappointment. If the price reflected the standard of the ryokan, we might not have a complaint, but at over 25,000 yen per day, this is an expensive accommodation option.
