The room is clean and tidy. Staffs are very friendly. They provided a map of nearby area which includes restaurants, supermarkets and even paid baths. The staff can speak very fluent English. You can feel how Japanese live by staying in this very Japanese home feel hotel.

This is an excellent ryokan in a great location in Kyoto. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the room was excellent and had everything i needed. Having 24hr access also came in handy. I will definitely be staying here on my next visit to Kyoto. Thanks

A little walk from kyoto station and downtown, so not the best location but still accessible. Our traditional ryokan room was small, typical. The restroom was really small and the toilet wasn't the high end Japanese high tech we found in nicer hotels. The restroom also had a musty smell after use. Ok for the ryokan experience but would not...

We had never stayed in a Ryokan before and so we tried this time. The hotel looks charming and the hosts and staff were excellent, so polite and helpful. The whole place is very clean and serene; a nice quiet place to rest. We regretfully had to miss breakfast because of early train to catch. The room was an average...

I came by myself to Kyoto for a lab visit and conference and stayed for seven days. I chose the modern Japanese room, which I highly recommend, as it has a couch area in addition to the sleeping/futon area with the tatami mat. (Personally, my back can only handle so much of sitting on the floor.) However, the real draw...

I thoroughly enjoyed my (all too brief) 2 nights here. It is just three bus stops from Kyoto station, for those who want to venture to the brighter night lights, but after a full day traipsing about, I Ioved returning to the more peaceful streets and lanes around the ryokan. As a solo female traveller, I felt quite at ease...

My advice to any traveller is to avoid this 'Ryoken' and stay at a hotel instead, due to; - you can hear your neighbours on all sides, paper thin walls - young child stomping on floor all night, heard every step and couldn't sleep - staff were rude and strange on checkin, not a Japanese welcome - mattresses were so...

We stayed in the Tea Ceremony room. Was big, nice entrance, the futons were so comfortable!! The staff were really nice and the traditional breakfast was delicious. Really near the central station and bus stop. Some temples around but it is on a quiet and peaceful area. Will repeat for sure!!

The hotel was OK, but seemed to scrimp on a few details which would dramatically improve the quality of the experience. At this hotel, guests are left to lay out their own futons, and to tidy them away. This is a departure from normal ryokan practice where hotel staff set out the bedding. Of course, this ryokan is cheaper than...

Visited Kyoto in early August, very hot month, and decided to walk to the ryokan from the train station. This is totally doable on any given day and the ryokan is relatively easy to find with a map that you can pick up at the stunning central train station so unless you have a lot of luggage or it's August...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
