Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

The location is a bit far from the train station and was a little difficult to find, but if you dont mind a bit of a walk, book here! We loved the common area where we can have coffee and foot massage after a long days' tour. The room was small but common for japanese rooms, it is clean though. Toilet and bath are available on every floor, and laundry if needed.

This is purely based on my experience - might be different to others (+) - It has a lift - very convenient to reach you up to 3rd floor - The neighborhood is very quite & peaceful - It has living room which fully equipped with TV with Netflix & foot massager (-) - The room is extremely small. I booked for triple room, and the room is so packed with 3 people & luggages. - Quite a walk from the nearest station (Tambaguchi Station) - Not so much to see around the area as it's located in the middle of residential - The bunk bed has a very low ceiling between the upper and lower bed (even when your're just trying to sit) - Not sure if this is part of the policy/regulation, but they ask for additional cost called accomodation tax when we arrived there. We're paying for 1,800 yen (in total for 3 nights stay) - but why it's only happened in this hostel though (?)

Garaku guest house is located only 10 minutes walk from JR station. Rooms are clean & tidy and also nearby mini market. Having tired of walking around for city-sightseeing, we can enjoy foot-massager machines in the living room in front of TV cables. We are happy to get good sleep because it is quite environment and We would love to recommend for bag-packers to stay in this guest house.

I stayed at Shiori-an Guest House for 2 nights before I moved to this Guesthouse. I was really impressed with the cleanliness and modernity of this guesthouse and regretted spending 2 nights at Shiori-an. Both compared, this guesthouse is ten times better, cheaper, cleaner and the staff are more helpful and courteous. I had a word with the manager of the guesthouse who informed me that the guesthouse is very new as it was only opened in June this year. I left my luggage bags at the guesthouse early morning when I moved from Shiori-an over here and the counter staff allowed me to keep with them free until I check-in in the evening after my tour to Arashiyama.. The bedroom was spacious for us and I like the shared bathroom which was superbly clean. Our room was at the second floor serviced by a lift. We need not climb up stairs unlike at Shiori-an. I like the tatami mat and you feel you are in one of the Japanese local house. Free and strong wifi. Free coffee and tea provided. There are also foot massage machines at the lobby for us to relax, watched the Japanese news at the flat screen TV while having our breakfast. The kitchen is superbly clean with a big fridge. There is a convenience Family Mart right outside the main road and a Ramen eatery within walking distance from the guesthouse. The metro station to the main Kyoto station is nearby and I enjoyed the peaceful environment of the neighborhood nearby. It is very easy to find the guesthouse by entering the lane beside the convenience store. Among the budget hostels and guesthouses I stayed during this trip to Kansai, this guesthouse is rated the best among those I stayed. I booked this guesthouse via Agoda and paid less than S$50/- for a double room with shared bathroom facility at this guesthouse. I am confident that you would not regret choosing this guesthouse.

An ideal choice for backpackers. Non-smoking property close to several bus lines that will take you all across Kyoto and a walking distance to the Kyoto Railway Museum. It is a quiet location in the middle of a residential area but with konbini within 5 minutes. The staff is friendly. Our room, 101, was very small so it's not ideal if you have luggage. This room is also right across from the reception so please be aware that you will hear everyone come in/go out.
