Although Kyoto received us with a thick rain and we were kind of dissapointed and tired after the Shinkansen journey from Tokyo, Eimi (the ryokan's owner) received us with huge energy and good humour (even though it was 7 pm). And the best part is that her great spirit didn't stop there! She has a contagious energy and good will...

The Hanakiya Inn is located in a picturesque location near the Kiyomizu Temple. The rooms are neat and clean and the shared bathrooms are tidy as well. We stayed in the annex location which is a short walk from the main building. I'm sure they are both run well and you should have no concerns staying in either location. We...

The homestay is located about 200m from Kiyomizu Temple with plenty of shops and food outlets around. Only 1.2km from the subway station. Taxi from the subway station to the hotel is 590 yen (i.e. only the initial charge) and stop at the Kiyomizu car park. It is also about 4.5km from Ginkakuji or Fushimi Inari Taisha. I have no...

We stayed at Hanakiya Inn recently at the end of November for a friend's wedding in Kyoto. We were so lucky to find this place at peak season for Fall Colours! We enjoyed our stay at Hanakiya Inn immensely. We ended up at the Annex rather than the main house, which was actually even more convenient to get in and...

After staying here in April 2013, I knew my husband and I would be back. So we were able to visit for three nights in mid-November. Kiyomizudera is my favorite place in the world, and if you want to visit it without fighting the crowds, you need to stay here. It takes a bit of a hike up the hill...

We spent several nights in this lovely ryokan during the sakura season, and enjoyed its cozy and homely atmosphere. We stayed in the annex, which has 4 bedrooms, shared bathroom and showers and a nice common room with fridge and microwave; I was a bit wary that it would have a 'hostel' feel but everything was so well kept and...

This was our first time to Kyoto, and our first time staying in shared quarters. My husband and I were both nervous about how staying in shared lodging would go, but we were very happy with our experience. Our room was private with a locking door. You only share the bathroom area and common area downstairs. We stayed in the...

We chose Hanakiya over hotel as we wanted to experience staying in a typical Japanese house or Ryokan. It is conveniently located...bus stop, restaurant, tourist attraction, shopping areas are just around the corner. The owner, Emie, is very accommodating and very helpful. She goes out of her way to please the tourists. The room is clean and in order. We...

I was there for for a week with my wife and daughter during cherry blossoming. We stayed in the annex, not far from the main building. The location is excellent and surprisingly quite. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was very nice and clean, sheets were changed after 3 days. For our tastes, there was a bit...

“Stay in the main house rather than the annex if you want the traditional ryokan experience!”

“Useful tips about Kyoto in general: 1: Most of Kyoto's attractions are on the east and west sides (Higashiyama and Arashiyama), not in the centre. Some areas of Higashiyama are close enough to the CBD to walk from (such as the Hanakiya) while Arashiyama is too far away. 2: The CBD of Kyoto (where the shopping and food is) is Kawaramachi-Shijo - it is nowhere near JR Kyoto station! If you want to get there from JR Kyoto either take the 100 bus to Kawaramachi-Shijo or the subway to Karasuma-Shijo (stop K09). 3: The bus system is the cheapest way to get around Kyoto. It goes most places and is only 500 yen for a daily ticket. You get on the bus from the rear door (not the front), and pay at the end of your trip.”

“I was with my parents and didn't want to be on the 2nd floor or more, so if you want to be close to common areas without getting up the stairs make your reservation ASAP, and they'll try to help you”
