First off, the location is hard to find if your taxi driver is not well versed in the street names of Gion. If the driver has any issue, tell them to drop you off in front of the Yasaka-Jinja shrine. Then, proceed down the street and turn left. Being in the middle of Gion was an excellent centralized location. It...

My wife was quite apprehensive about not staying in a "normal" hotel but I was adamant and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this ryokan. Staff went above and beyond from helping with our heavy luggage from their sister hotel to their hotel, to providing umbrellas by the door and all with a smile. The room was immaculate and the...

This is our first ryokan stay and we are absolutely thrilled with it. The room is spacious, clean; a ryokan with modern amenity (toilet & such). We pretty much spent our time in the neighborhood - enchanted by the quaint houses, shops, shrines. All the sights are within walking distance.

We didn't had meals in the hotel, so we can't give feed back about the quality of the food. But the room was perfect: three futons perfectly lined and prepared before going to sleep and the typical low table....

I visited here for one night for my family trip to Kyoto. I have to stay, this is just a typical Japanese style inn but not that impressive. Even in Japanese standard it is not the best kind. The service is average in Japanese standard. The food is alright, but not too impressive. I ordered the hot pot, which is...

Karaku is in the heart of Gion, right south of Yasaka Shrine, and right by the Nene's Street. This area is so lovely. Nene's street leads south down to Kiyomizu Temple, passing Kodai-ji on the way. The atmosphere around the area is very quaint, with stone paved path curving up and down, saddled by the traditional Japanese buildings. There are...

“We selected 4th floor paying extra for better view and slightly larger room. In hindsight that really wasn't necessary. The surrounding location is so pretty and pleasant, and the room is a little too big for two people. 2nd or 3rd floor would have been just fine.”
