I thought this ryokan was very beautiful. The area was beautiful as well. We took a walk around the area one evening and it was so lovely. This place is lush and green and quiet and just what we needed. The dinner and breakfast was great too. It was a good opportunity to try lots of different types of traditional... More

Ryokan Nenrinbo is nestled in a great spot in the mountains to the north of Kyoto. It's a beautiful hotel and offers a properly authentic experience. The front desk staff are incredibly efficient and attentive, speaking great English. The dining experience was a little intimidating due to the language barrier, though - it would have been nice to have someone... More

We stayed at nenrinbo for a night in jenuary. It has been one of the best experience in Japan: you should try the kaiseki dinner, you will have fine traditional food served by the more Kind and smiling geisha that you could ever meet in kyoto. After the dinner you will sleep in a soft and comfortable futon and the... More

The location, the rooms and the staff were exceptional. After a day out touring it was bliss to visit the onset, relax and then enjoy dinner. Friendly concierge went to the trouble of writing out an itinerary for us (included the bus numbers!). The staff in the dining room were a delight.

What makes Ryokan Nenrinbo so special is the very professional and heart-warming team of staff who all spoke perfect English, which made a world of difference in helping us plan our itinerary and got the best out of Kyoto, especially when we only had 2 days there. The concierge of the hotel went out of his way to help us find our way into and through Kyoto from the moment we arrived. Even though we were there before check-in and our room wasn't available -- they took our bags and guided us to local events in walking distance that were just starting. Kyoto is a beautiful city... We had a great stay for only one night and could visit a number of beautiful sites like Kinkaku-ji which is a nice 20 minutes walk along the river! Food and dining facilities are superb! And staff really friendly , they brought us to the station when it was pouring rain !!!

We stayed at several properties over our 10 days in Japan, but this Ryokan was my personal favorite. The reason why? Absolutely impeccable service and an incomparable view combined with a Japanese aesthetic that welcomed us into the heart of Kyoto on our first night there. I used the onset here. Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighborhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
