If you are trying out a Ryokan for the first time, Kazuki could be a good start. The location is not too far from the subway and is very quiet. However, the room was not too impressive. It was quite dated (I feel it needs refurbishing). The size was comfortable (based Japanese standards), the heating was satisfactory and tatami was... More

Location is perfect in the city center and the public baths are well decorated in Japanese style. Employees are very welcoming. But this place is not a ryokan as the name seems to precise, more than 30 rooms, so the private atmosphere as we expect in a ryokan is not really here. It's hard to find someone speaking English, hard... More

This traditional ryokan in the central Kyoto district is clean, comfortable and has delicious food for breakfast. The staff were super helpful and the bathhouses were clean and in a beautiful setting. We could walk to buses and metros easily and loads of restaurants are in this area. They allowed us to store our bags and helped us with transportation... More

This ryokan makes for a great authentic Japanese experience. I have stayed 6 or so different ryokans in Japan, and this one is very nice. The entrance walkway is goregous and the decoration, even inside the elevator, is elegant. The onsens are a real highlight--the outdoor bath is absolutely lovely, and all four of them have nice gardens that they... More

Superb location equidistant from Gion and train station. Rooms have western comfort of good air conditioning and private plumbing although our room tub and shower was quite old but was clean and worked well,. Just enough Japanese character with Tatami mat and futons to give a Japanese traditional feeling. Service is very accommodative but english speaking is average. Western breakfast... More

When my wife booked us a stay at a Ryokan, I didn't really have a way to prepare myself for the experience. With the room upgrade, we were given a huge place to stay in Japan and it definitely made our experience more enjoyable. There were guides for newbies on some particulars for a ryokan and it made us more... More

The hotel is in modern building near center of Kyoto, Rokkakudo Temple. The interior and service of hotel is Japanese style. Our room located in north wing of hotel, which is not near the street, and quieter than south wing. Our room is big enough for stay of 4 people. We have private rest room and bathtub in room. The... Japanese hotels are already nice, clean & beautifully made, with such great aesthetics. But this one was INSANE it felt soooo luxurious; traditional huge rooms with even a small garden outside. The bath is amazing, it has a tube outside and you can bathe and see the stars! everything was soooo clean and complete; they give you everything. Traditional breakfast... More

I was expecting a slightly more traditional ryokan, the rooms are very modern. We were upgraded to a suite which by Japanese standards was extremely spacious. The bathroom was well appointed but the toilet wasn't next door. There's also a room with a TV with a massage chair. There's only free WIFI in a certain part of the lobby, I... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
