Luxurious ryokan - more space than we needed for 2 adults and 3 teenage boys. Fresh flowers in room. Full selection of amenities. 5 star service! Kimonoed server brought us tea & served it in our room upon arrival. Everytime we came in or out 2 desk staff literally ran to help us with our shoes. They kept our luggage...

Great first experience in a Ryokan, and very central good location on Sanjo street for shopping, the market, Inoda Coffee etc. English was limited by the staff, but they were very sincere and had printed English instructions for a rundown of when beds would be made, and other amenities. People were talking about onsen in the hotel, but when I...

I stayed here as a family of five (including a baby) and had a great time. The staff were the friendliest bunch. Everyone was helpful and went beyond their expected duties at the ryokan. The breakfast was changed everyday. The staff transformed our room everyday with efficiency which was much appreciated. The location was great as well - close to...

The staff are very friendly and helpful. Nissho Besso is centrally located for sightseeing. It is within walking distance to Gion, Pontocho, Yasaka Shrine. It is located on a quiet street just blocks away from Museum of Kyoto. There are lots of restaurants and shops nearby. Part of the ryokan is currently under renovation. The rooms have basic amenities that...

We stayed at the ryokan for 4 nights. The room was simple, clean and well able to fit 4 people. We have never experienced such a professional and personal service before. We never had to mention our room no, we're always greated with much enthusiasm and never had to wait for anything. The beds were always cleared after we had...

Truly excellent experience! Staff speak ok English. Very caring and helpful. Room amazing traditional style consisting of three rooms and bathroom, opening to small garden. Breakfast very delicious. Location perhaps best in Kyoto. Full of trendy upmarket shops and restaurants yet still traditional and calm. Close to Gion. Most of all, outstanding value for money.

Everything we had hoped for in a Ryokan experience we found at Nissho Besso. And the bonus... it's in a central location so we could easily get to anywhere in town by walking, biking or subway. As for the Ryokan experience - the service was over the top, the breakfast was extremely traditional, our room was converted from sitting room...

I'm an Englishman who spent three days and two nights at this hotel over the course of one weekend with his girlfriend. 1. Presentation/cleanliness - Could not see a single spec of dust anywhere. Even the zen garden in the hotel was well-kept and cultivated. 2. Service - Very receptive staff who did their best to help me. They were...

Great location and it brings a real Japanese experience. You'll have a real Japanese room with on floor mattress, floor made of tatami, low table, green tea and the technological Japanese toilet (I love it). I really recommend that place if you're planning to visit Kyoto.

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighborhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
