Typical japanese hotel in Kyoto. Not the most confortable...the hotel is old and needs some refurbishment but is OK for a couple of days while you are visiting the town. Breakfast buffet is poor...and 80% of the staff don't speak any english...anyway all of them were really friendly. Is a hotel for locals more than for western people.

Stayed here with a tour group run by Samurai Tours (excellent tour group that allows you to tour Japan like a local). Pros: 1) The location. Right next to a major bus stop and down the street from a convenience store and a laundromat! 2) Amazing customer service3) Value for price. Cons: 1) Western rooms still has tatami style seating....

Stayed for one night in a Japanese style room with traditional futon beds. As other reviewers have said, the hotel is a bit tired and dated, but we really loved our experience here. During two weeks in Japan we stayed mostly in tiny rooms in business hotels and were delighted by the spacious room we had here. A large tatami...

This "modern" ryokan is well past its prime and in need of updating. Staff is friendly, but short on English speakers. Public areas are drab and bathrooms are dated. On the other hand, we had authentic experience seeing busloads of Japanese and Chinese tourists come and go at this place that reminded us of a "Howard Johnson." Breakfast buffet was...

Hotel Tozankaku is well located for touring Kyoto's eastern temples, especially Kyomizudera and Sanjusangendo, for a quick taxi ride to Kyoto Station, and for buses. It's tired and dated--no outlet in the dreary bathroom, no blow-dryer, etc.--but is entirely typical of Japanese hotels. Our tatami room faced the garden and away from the street and was very quiet, except for...

This was the first time I stayed in a room with western bed and tatami. Quite big and the room well equipped. The location also good to explore the Kyoto, quite near to the hot spot-Kiyomizudera, Gion etc. The hotsprings are powerful to message your tired body, especially the falling one that I enjoy most. The dinner were a full...

Dated, but very traditional Japanese hotel. The interior is dated, however the hotel is close to main attractions, and it even has a traditinal Japanese Onsen. Early evening staff comes to your room, to make your bed on the tatami floor.

This hotel is in a good location and slightly away from the main drag hotels. It is a very "japanese" hotel with authentic tatami mat japanese style bedrooms. Ours had a shower in it but the hotel also has a public bath separated for men and women which is similar to onsen bathing. We arrived and went down to the...

Despite seemingly not had a refurb since the 1970s, this is a pleasant hotel to stay and a good value option for staying near Gion. We were a little concerned having read the reviews here as to whether we would get a private bathroom, however our Japanese style room did have one. The hotel presents a good opportunity to stay...

On our trip around Japan we decided to stay in completely different types of accommodation in every city, and this ryokan seemed very fitting for Kyoto. The rooms are quite large with a separate seating area with green tea, the bed area has tatami mats and bedding, and they give you fantastic free yukata and slippers that you are invited...
