This being a JR-chain hotel meant that convenience is one of the key features. The Hotel Granvia Kyotol is located above the JR station with easy access from arrival platform. Check-in was efficient and a crew of hotel staff was standing by to bring our luggage to our room. No wonder this hotel garnered awards and recognitions. The hotel is... More

Comfortable, relax, convenient. Shopping centre, Kyoto Aquarium and Kyoto Railway Museum very close hotel by walk 20mins. Kyoto Aquarium very suitable family old and young. Kyoto Railway Museum I'm highly recommend to go. Very new since June2016. Everyone can learn a lot railway history from Japan. Amazing place!! We are so loving it!

Very nice modern clean hotel, and by Japanese standards, big rooms. Close to railway, lots of cafes and food stores close by, and the breakfast is uniquely Japanese, a good experience. We could walk to some of the temples and other attractions.

This hotel is huge! Modern rooms and bathrooms. Stocked with complimentary bathroom supplies. The toilet had lots of buttons to try out. The location was super convenient, at the train station which was convenient for me coming off the Bullet Train.

I was a bit hesitant booking a room at a train station hotel, but wow! Would totally do it again. The hotel rooms were a nice size (by American standards). The decor fine, the beds good, shower good, no noise from trains (see tips below). The view, stunning! The location, amazing. There is a shopping center connected to the train... More

Since we don't speak Japanese, it was a relief to get off our train and immediately see the signs directing us to the hotel. The location is itself a destination, complete with an Instagram-ready light show on the stairs leading to the the rooftop garden for viewing the city, the Kyoto Theater, and many restaurants. It's also a short walk... More

Superb location if you intend to use Kyoto as a base to travel around as the Kyoto station is just downstairs. Also because there are so many restaurants within the same building. Even if you take a room without breakfast, you can find pastry shops and cafes just downstairs. The Kyoto Information Centre is also just downstairs and they're very... More

Lovely hotel, incredibly friendly staff and very very busy here! It is right behind the station, not as bad as it sounds. We did end up seeing 3 rooms. First was no smoking on a smoking floor (we asked for a no smoking room)... It stank! Second then faced the station and was quite noisy with the announcements and trains..... More

Super convenient with easy access to the JR lines, subway, restaurants, and shopping. Nice, clean rooms that are reasonably priced. No issue with noise in our rooms. Note that there is an extra fee to use the pool/gym.

Aside from the front desk clerk who was accommodating and straightened out our reservations everything about this hotel is mediocre and disappointing. Rooms are minute. Amenities lacking: not enough charging stations, no robes in room, bathroom tiny- not enough towels, rooms paper thin- lots of noise in the hallway. Very expensive for what it is.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
