If Gion is the heart of old Kyoto culture then Gion Hanata might well be the heart of traditional Kyoto kaiseki cuisine complete with the correct ambience and ladies in kimono serving the diners at the low tables as well as the highlight of the evening.. a geiko and her apprentic

A really enjoyable evening, the Maiko were delightful and graceful. The idea of a Geisha evening open to the public (and tourists) is a genius.

The food came out a bit quick and would have appreciated being able to enjoy the food seperate from the entertainment.

For those of you not familiar with Geisha (Maiko,Geiko), this is an incredible hands on experience. Maiko is precursor to becoming a Geiko and must be under 20 years of age. Highly educational mixed a fair quantity of alcohol.

Hello! I am travelling with my family, 2y and 5y children. Is this hotel suitable? We would like a traditional Japanese experience with futon, tatami mats and onsen. We enjoy Japanese foods. Thank you :-)
I think so. I think the room I stayed in could easily accomodate two adults n two children.(you have to make aure with the Ryokan though) This is a traditional ryokan with tatami and futons. They do have traditonal pubulic bath but it's not onsen water. You would have to go further away from the center of the town if you want Onsen. They serve excellent japanese breakfast and they even have traditional Japanese show 3 or 4 times a week, of course you would have to make reservations before you go. the best thing about this ryokan is a location. It's near all the sites and right in the middle of Gion, yet very quiet and we even ran into real Gheisha and Maiko in the street at night. I recommend it highly.

I use a CPAP machine. Are there electrical outlets in the rooms where the futons would be? Even outlets accessible by extension cord would do in a pinch. Thanks!
Yes. You should not have an issue. Just make sure you bring the appropriate converter.

Is this close to subway station? I will go with my 70 year old mum. She can walk but I want to make sure it is in walking distance from subway b4 I book it. Thx!
No it is not close to the subway but there is a bus stop nearby. Recall that taxis in Japan are rather expensive; it costs about US$15 from the train station.

Couple questions: 1) Are meals served in the guestrooms or in a dining room? 2) Are the public onsen free for guests to use or is that an additional charge? 3) Are drinks included?
Hi Leah. Apologies for the late reply. 1. Meals are served in the guest room (way over-priced and not worth it). The buffet breakfast offered Sunrise Hotel 2 blocks away is fine and I would do it for convenience sake. 2. Drinks are not included. 3. Onsen are free for guests (and quite nice). This ryokan has an incredible location but it's overpriced and there are several lower priced smaller ones within a few blocks that I'm sure are better (same amazing location). I definitely wouldn't stay here again (rooms/bathrooms are large and that along with the hotel-like concierge service is what you're paying for -- stay at a smaller place for a far more personal, more traditional experience). Enjoy Kyoto.

Does the price quoted include breakfast and dinner, or are there additional charges?
when we were booking, the website we used gave us room options that includes breakfast and that does NOT include. Also similar for dinner. we chose the one that includes both the breakfast and dinner even though that was higher price than without. But if you see the one with breakfast and dinner, get it. it is worth it.
