First of all, Gion Hatanka is a very hard place to photograph. That's why every shot seems to be of the steps!! Inside it is surprisingly spacious. You step off the street from right outside the Yasaka Shrine into the wonderful world of Gion Hatanaka. The kids (and we) were squealling with excitement at the understated loveliness of it all.... My family and I stayed at Gion Hatanaka in June. We stayed in the ryokan and attended the Geisha show. We have traveled a lot, and in any country $1000 per night is a LOT of money. Was it worth it? If you are going to stay in a ryokan, this is the going rate and this is a very... More

Beautiful building with ENORMOUS rooms and spot on service. A touch dated but I have no frame of reference as this was our first stay in a ryokan. The dinner was unreal as was the breakfast. Easily as good as any Michelin star restaurant in Tokyo. That alone was worth the price. Slept like a baby on our tatami futon... More

I have been in love with geishas for a long time. Here you will experience a multiple course meal (exciting and new dishes) while watching geisha and her apprentices perform. They are absolutely stunning. They will come to your table to talk to you and take pictures. And of course there are drinking games! Unlimited sake. It's a blast. I... More

We stayed two nights here in early July. I had difficulty getting a handle on which Ryokan to stay at and researched endlessly. The service was traditional and excellent and the property is beautifully decorated. The public bath was beautiful and well maintained. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend anyone staying here take time out of the... More

This is a really special experience to stay two nights at this ryokan and enjoy the meals, the baths and the sights of Kyoto. Had a very wonderful experience here with amazing service by everyone. Most of the front desk speaks English fairly well, and are incredibly helpful. The price is not cheap, but for a family of four with... More

This elegant ryokan is a real highlight of my Japan trip. Set next to a temple, as soon as you take a step inside you are transported to another world. The entire place is beautifully appointed. The rooms are huge and elegant with traditional Japanese futon bedding. The service was also impeccable, with breakfast and dinner provided. Each was traditional... More

This would be an ideal way to experience a Ryokan- it is peaceful, conveniently located, very comfortable and friendly. Our room had a private bathroom and we also did use the communal washrooms, which were lovely and relaxing. The dining here was spectacular. We opted for dinner and breakfast, both of the meals were actually incredible. Highly recommend!

We stayed in Gion Hatanaka for 2 nights - it's our second time in Kyoto and we fell in love with Gion Hatanaka after coming for a maiko dinner during our first trip. Our stay didn't disappoint - the room was traditional japanese ryokan style, luxurious and spacious. We booked the breakfast and room option as we don't eat heavy... More

An amazing experience of staying in a ryokan. It's very beautiful. Spacious spartan rooms. Excellent food. The Onsen is beautiful and relaxing after a day out. The ryokan provides the perfect feel of a traditional stay. Excellent location too close to the most beautiful streets of Kyoto. Very courteous staff. Can't find fault!
