my husband and mother in law visited this ryokan two years ago and had glowing reviews. they were always reminiscing about the meals at shiraume, so when we booked our christmas trip here, i had VERY high expectations (which i'm happy to report was all met)! the ryokan is centrally located in gion, right by the canal, which is just... It would not be fair for me to say it is the best, as I have not lived in all ryokans in Kyoto. And I probably will never be able to, because I could not justify not revisiting. As other shared, the living experience is superb. Staff with excellent English are highly professional - yet lovely - don't worry about... More

We have never been made to feel more welcome than we were at this intimate ryokan ideally situated in the Gion district. The owner, Mrs Okuda was infinitely patient and attentive in all her explanations on Japanese culture and food, all staff were courteous and professional, the meals were exceptional and the architectural attention to detail in the ryokan itself... This was our first time to Japan and staying here made the trip for us. It is an authentic Japanese experience that cannot be missed. We staying in the room at the front which over looked the stream, it was large and very comfortable with the modern cons you expect but they were blended in with the traditional elements perfectly.... When our taxi-guide Mr Nobu heard that we would be staying at Shiraume, he told us: “NOW your stay in Kyoto will be perfect!” Indeed, it was a perfect way to end our short trip to Kyoto. Shiraume is quite simply, lovely. Ms Tomoko is the consummate hostess – ask her anything and she will gladly share with you her... More

We have tried several times to book our return here since our first visit two years ago. Finally we were lucky enough to secure a booking this December. Everything I mentioned in my earlier review stands so I will focus on new impressions. This is stilk the place to stay in Kyoto. Location, service, experience. First timers cannot go wrong... More

We stayed in the Umekoyomi room, which was spacious and nice. Overlooks the stream which was great, but lots of tourists were snapping photos of us inside the room while we were having our kaiseki dinner! Tomoko was the best host ever, she even sent us christmas and new year greetings after we went back home. first class.

As many other reviewers have written, it is in a very beautiful district. The food is excellent, and I would say, elements of the dinner I had rival and even exceed what one can get at michelin 3-star ryotei, and I have dined in a few of those. In fact, staying here and dining here is far more worth it... More

My partner and I stayed here for four nights after starting our holiday at the Park Hyatt Tokyo and I loved this ryokan even more. Please try to stay for at least one evening meal (we took two) as they are without compare ). Tomoko also arranged two evening meals for us both Michelin star establishments and gave us a... More

We booked Shiraume after it was recommended to us by a friend, and were really looking forward to the traditional Ryokan experience after having stayed most of our visit in Western style hotels. Let me tell you, Shiraume exceeded our expectations and was absolutely one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. From the moment you approach the entry... More

Staying in Gion

Neighborhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
