We had such an incredible stay at Shiraume! I even got teary eyed upon leaving. If you are planning a trip to Kyoto, this is a must stay place! The staff was extremely helpful in answering all of our questions and always extremely warm! Tomoko, the manager, was extremely attentive, smart, and a wealth of information. The stories and history... More

We visited Shiraume this summer for a couple of days in Kyoto. We had one of the best breakfast and dinners. The ambiance was unique and the service was amazing. Ms.Okuda was so knowledgable and she educated us on the local culture. We had a great time!

Shiraume is an oasis in Kyoto. It is lovingly maintained and operated. The rooms are a good size, the place is quiet and relaxing. It provides wonderful respite for travelers. The keisakei dinners are a fantastic culinary experience, too, but the breakfasts are just as good (though a bit less adventurous). What will always remain in our memories is the... More

All the good things written about Shiraume are true. It was a wonderful (very) small hotel experience. I'm not generally a "bed and breakfast" person but I won't book a trip to Kyoto without first making sure I can stay here. The rooms are simple in a considered way; very comfortable. The food is excellent! We had breakfast in a... More

We loved every second of our ryokan experience. Everything, from the staff, the place, the food, was perfect! The Kaiseki traditional full course as great, so was the Japanese breakfast. And they were the nicest people in Japan. Truly, I recommend it!

Room booked: Umekoyomi Room Words cannot describe this experience, but i'll try my best. Simply put, this was one of the best places I've stayed in. The warmth and hospitality is simply unparalleled by any St Regis or Park Hyatt out there. Tomoko and her staff pampered us and treated us like guests in their own home. Crossing over a... More

We stayed one night at this beautiful Ryokan which blended tradition with modern features. Our host and the staff were most welcoming and hospitable and we had a beautiful and quiet room which provided an excellent night's sleep. After checking in we reserved a slot for using the hotel bath which they set up for us. Very relaxing! We ate... More

My partner and I stayed at Shiraume for 2 nights at the end of May. We originally only booked 1 night, but after checking in we loved the place, and were so warmly welcomed we immediately asked to stay the next night too! Tomoko and her staff were truly wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and their attention to detail... More

Although pricey we found it was worth it (night with diner and breakfast 700Usd). Great location and beautiful house. The food was delicious - diner and also amazing breakfast. We slept very well on the futons. Staff is very pro and detail oriented and owner is nice, although sometimes sounds a little bit "too much story telling" but the nice... More

Stayed here for 2 nights on a girls trip with a friend. The service the location and the accommodation are just incredible. If you stay here you will have an experience you will never forget. Oh and not to mention that happy hour lasts 6 hours and the beer and sake is on the house 😀 Five stars!!

Staying in Gion

Neighborhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
