I took my entire flight time to Shanghai to type this review, I hope this is something that will be reflected in the improvements of this hotel. This is a 100% honest review reflecting on the experience I had at the Crowne Plaza City Center in Guangzhou. As an IHG Platinum Member, I have been visiting a lot of IHG Hotels including 13 InterContinental Hotels, 3 Crowne Plaza Hotels, 1 Holiday Inn Hotel, 2 Holiday Inn Express Hotels and 1 Kimpton Hotel. I always expect to see a fine line of standards within each respective brand, and I always take the each hotel accountable to my experience and always expect to experience what I paid for. Crowne Plaza is an IHG Brand in the “Premium” Tier of IHG Rewards. It is a hotel that has a fine full service hotel experience at a smart casual premium level. Normally I would choose InterContinental Hotel as the hotel brand of my choice, but because of the Guangzhou Crowne Plaza City Center Hotel’s convenient location, I have decided to pick this hotel over a far away InterContinental Hotel away from the city center. My father and I visited this hotel from Easter Sunday/ Qingming Holiday (April 4th, 2021) to April 5th 2021. I booked a 2 Single Beds Superior Room at 750 RMB ($114) per night which includes a 5000 point bonus. One day prior to my arrival at the hotel, I was called by reservation to confirm any preferences in my stay. I have to say that this is one hotel that only does a pre-arrival call. It is indeed a kind gesture, and I had my expectations set coming into stay. One that expects a room to be ready under my numerous requests. Another that is ready to serve me and father in this stay. The final that would be a smooth experience from Check-In to Check-Out. We arrived at the hotel at the hotel at 3PM. We were checked-in by S*#@& W@$%. (Name censored) The time it took for us to check-in was 10 minutes. Upon walking out of the IHG Rewards Priority Lane, we were finding out way to the elevator. That is where we met Guests Service Manager James Condon of the United States (A Fellow American Citizen). This is certainly the first time I have seen an on-shift foreign manager at any Chinese IHG Property, and yet I was quite impressed of his assistance. He dragged our carry-on luggage and lead us to the distinct elevator to get us the 49th floor. I was not too impressed with Ms. W@$%, as she did not write down the hotel number on the sleeve of the key holder. We were given membership drink vouchers with the hotel number on them. However, the two vouchers showed two different numbers: 4913 and 4915. Though I should note that it is a common mistake, which is rare. Which room was it exactly? Well, Mr. Condon helped us solve that mystery as he got us into 4915. He knew by heart actually knew that 4913 was a King Bed Room. I have to say he is the staff highlight of our stay. James if you are watching this, you’re awesome! We were pretty impressed with our Breakfast Dim Sum experience at Baiyuelou Cantonese Restaurant. Whilst some of the dishes take a very bold modern twists on strictly traditional dim sum, we were impressed by the traditional non-altered dishes we were served. My father and I are proud to declare that Baiyuelou serves the Best Steamed Beef Balls we have ever had. This is a dish that requires a lot of ratio, precise timing, and use of authentic ingredients. In the past 10 years as a veteran diner at many of the Dim Sum restaurants in Hong Kong, Shanghai and San Francisco, we have never had a dish served such in an authentic way. Particularly when the chef used tofu skin at the bottom of steamed beef balls and Worcestershire sauce as the key condiment. The price for the breakfast was quite reasonable. I really recommend folks coming here to Guangzhou, even if you choose not to stay at Crowne Plaza to try the restaurant. We would like to thank manager Michelle Fung and her team for the amazing experience at Baiyuelou. It would be well worth the authenticity demands and taste in your own time. In addition to our breakfast, we appreciate the Cantonese Pork Bone Soup given to us as an amuse bouche in the room; along with the welcome fruit basket and complimentary drink at the City Common Lounge. Unfortunately, the entire experience was let down by my given room. This is where I would like to express deep disappointment in my room (4915). Whilst I highly appreciate the double-tier upgrade to the Special View Room, I was disappointed with how the room turned out for me and my father. First, during the evening of my stay, I was in the bathtub taking bath. When using the faucet of the bathtub, some of the shower faucet water were leaking out despite being fully set on the faucet over the shower mode in the bathtub. When finished, I was trying to discharge the water in the drained by turning the metal mechanism. The mechanism failed and the handle for the drainage mechanism came off the bathtub. My father had to pull the drainage pin out of the bathtub. I should note that it could have been dangerous, as there can be rust in the drainage pin and pipe, which can cause a nasty infection that no one can imagine. Luckily, my father pulled the drainage pin out safely, discharging the water into the drain. Another very frustrating thing was the ventilation/ air conditioning unit, as it made some constant electro-static sound in the middle of the night when trying to sleep. I was unable to sleep for about an hour after getting into bed, as the noise was still keeping me awake for an hour. I have video recordings of the noise from the vents, which was sent to management via the front desk staff working at 4PM of the 5th of April. In addition, I was not happy about the bidet pipe next to the toilet, as I thought it was the flush but it was actually a bidet. Of course there was a slight water mess after trying it. Aesthetically, it looked like the flush switch, but in reality it is a bidet shower. I also regret to inform those considering to stay and those looking to improve the room, that the room is somewhat being worn off. The membership sticker that offers a 15% discount on food and beverage was worn off from the bathroom mirror. The USB port was also misplaced from the glued position. The room was simply in need of some desperate maintenance. Some window cleaning to clear up the beautiful view of Guangzhou would have been also nice and more presentable. I would like to point out to the Managing Department and General Manager Kobe Koo that such rooms are to prepared at its 100% with the exception of just 1 or 2 minor mistakes during the entirety of the experience. This was way overboard, and I have never seen this many errors inside a single room. Even with the Air Conditioning Unit with the Electro Static Noise, it has fundamentally disturbed the basic principles of a hotel, which is rest peacefully without disturbance. I couldn’t even fall asleep until 1 AM. There is some good things to say about room, the overall layout design of the room was great, some furniture, bedding was great and the housekeeping staff. Besides that, I couldn’t think of anything else that was in ways a positive thing about the room. My complaints were forwarded to Check-Out Staff member Vivien Wu, who is a professional and nice individual. Who somehow managed to get through some of my deep concerns and frustrations through my own emotionally frustrated state. I commend her for taking all I had to say with evidence all in. She offered me an upgrade on my next stay, but if I was to be very honest, my return this summer to Guangzhou would most likely just to visit Baiyuelou. I would come back and stay if the hotel is willing to further test out the details of the rooms before anyone stays in there. The stay wasn’t all bad with the good food and decent to great staff, it’s just that the main product I paid for should be up and running at its 100%. Clearly this hotel has been aging, it perhaps needs renovations. Of all 21 IHG Hotel I have stayed at, unfortunately this ranks at the bottom of the ranking list based on reflection of the room. Even my recent hotel stay in Shunde, which was a 2009 opened Sheraton without any renovations did better than this newer 2011 hotel. Quite frankly, I’m shocked and still am by my experience here on Easter Sunday. I had some regrets choosing this hotel in the first place. I should have chosen InterContinental Guangzhou in the first place!!!

Nice room - front desk Raymond is super friendly really a great staff. Beds are comfy and shower was amazing. Only reason I can give it 3 stars is that the food quality is horrendous. It’s priced in the middle, it’s not cheap and not super expensive, but the food quality is below expectations. Your FB manager needs to look at the western selection - sausages and bacon should be the “real deal” not the pink flimsy local stuff. The orange juice in the bottle, for the price of the buffet, should be real orange juice not bottled sugar water. (I get it.. food cost, but if you price the buffet in the double digits you can give the sugar water). Actually I was at the hotel a few years ago and remember the buffet sucked then and it still sucks now - just a few changes and I would be staying here a lot more! (Real orange juice, real sausages, real bacon - that’s all!)

This is easily my favorite hotel in Guangzhou, every 6 months I come here for the Canton fair. Great big rooms, full luxury breakfast with everything you can imagine, it's like a 6 star hotel breakfast! They have a great set of foreign managers as well. The American James seemed to never gone home my entire stay and helped quite a bit with lots of new restaurants in the area. Thanks for all his hard work and will see you guys very soon!

The hotel is in an excellent location. It’s pretty much in the center of the city, making it convenient to go anywhere, either for business or pleasure. The services of the hotel are beyond expectations. In particular, the American manager James was very friendly and helpful. His smiles and greetings warmed us, and he was always ready to help. He was able to offer advice like a local. You can tell he enjoys living in the city, and he is passionate about his job.
