We were at the hotel on New Year's Eve. Festive banquet plus accommodation until January 4th. 3 star hotel. The level of repair is 15 years ago. Slightly shabby everywhere. Pros: comfortable bed, wardrobe, TV, very warm in the room, view from the window. Cons: showers are old, showers are new, but the pressure is poor. Water leaks onto the floor from below; the towels are old, not used; carpet with a smell. Single-layer toilet paper. Breakfast: standard, you won’t leave hungry. Coffee from the machine, not very good. Who loves it is better to buy.

After spending many hours online looking for a place to stay in St-Petersburg, I booked that hotel online hoping for the best (only comment I could find online was that the place was recently renovated, high ceilings, and walking distance from Nevsky Prospect). Needless to say I was really anxious to see what the place looked like.
What a relief... the place was great. People at the reception were nice and helpful, could speak english (not great but ok), the place was very clean and new, including the rooms, and everything was exactly as I had booked. They didn't fake the whole 'can't find your booking' routine or the 'we need to charge you extra'.
As advertised, it is located at about a 10 minutes walk from Nevsky, and 20 from the Hermitage.
Only downside was the breakfast, which was very very ordinary, but based on my readings, it's Russia...
Overall I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a decent hotel in St-Petersburg with a good location.
Enjoy Russia!

In the six nights I've stayed here, Hotel Asteria has both charmed and disappointed me.
What I liked:
-Location. Some people have complained, but whether the location is good for you or not really depends on what you want. It is somewhat far from the metro, but it's great for accessing the attractions that are further away from the Nevsky Proskpekt (such as the Mariinsky theater). If you are someone who enjoys walking around beautiful cities (I do), the location is just fine. This hotel is far enough from the hustle and bustle where you'll get your sleep, but it's close enough to be walking distance to almost everything you'd like to see. Also, my room faced the water and I loved waking up to that view every morning.
-Staff: They're friendly. They keep the rooms clean most of the time (although my room didn't get cleaned one of the days I was here, not sure why...)
-The beds. A lot of people complained about these, too, so maybe they changed them... But I've been traveling for three weeks now and this is the first time I want to take a bed home with me. It is SO comfortable.
Also, there's a library which I didn't get to check out, but that's a cool concept.
And here's what I didn't like:
-Internet. As someone who was here on business, I was SO frustrated every morning and evening when the internet just wouldn't work. It didn't really work for any of my colleagues, either. When it does work, it's patchy and slow. This was a deal-breaker for me.
-The food. They offer free breakfast and there is a small restaurant. Don't eat there. The breakfast is the worst I've ever encountered. They have a lot of options, but very few of them are good and the ones that are disappear within minutes. And it takes a loooong time for them to be replaced. As for the dinner options, don't bother. They're fairly priced, but pretty much everything I've had here tasted terrible. On top of that, it takes them forever to actually make anything. I waited almost an hour for pasta my first night. Even a glass of wine can take a while (which really makes no sense).
-Thin walls. If your neighbors are fighting next door (mine did), you'll be in on the action! Bonus: your trip won't be boring.
Conclusion:
If you're on a budget and you just want to visit St. Petersburg to do the touristy walking around thing, go for it. The place is cute, cozy, comfortable, and well-placed. But don't expect to get a lot of work done here if you need to come home to a productive environment or if your time is limited and you need to grab a quick bite to eat at the hotel.

From the doorstep, negative attitude. The boy answered the front desk as a favor. Arrived at 6:00, asked to check in early, replied that all available rooms are dirty, and in general he does not know how much this service costs. He didn't offer to go to breakfast, although breakfast had already started at 40 minutes.
Prudent attitude, not a bit of customer orientation.

Of course, you shouldn’t expect even a good 4* from a 3* level. The business trip coincided with the SPIEF days and the budget fit only 3*. There is no light source at the head of the bed. There is no socket either. One socket per room, into which a tee is plugged in (!!!), a refrigerator and a TV are connected to the tee, and one free one is for charging the phone, apparently 🤦🏻♀️. There are no robes or slippers. The furniture, the carpet - everything is tired. The smell of old things and grandma's trunk throughout the hotel. The breakfast was disgusting and didn't give me any appetite at all.
There was one plus - but this is the merit of those. services - the old air conditioner worked properly, the plumbing did not drip or leak.

The hotel is over 60. Old, the carpet specifically on the 6th floor is covered in huge stains, there is an unpleasant smell in the corridor. If you need ironing, they won’t bring an iron to your room; you need to go from the 6th floor to the 5th floor and all the way to the end of the corridor - nonsense!!! Bring paid tea to your room - delivery 200 rubles, room service)).
A buffet line, if you can call it that in a restaurant... well, if you are very hungry, you can eat, but the interior, given the St. Petersburg flavor, is simply sad. I will never return and will not recommend to anyone. To me it's so terrible. The room was clean in general, there were some shortcomings, but we turned a blind eye to everything. Useless. No service...Alas. St. Petersburg is full of cool places, but here everything is bad.

Check-in was smooth and the staff was very friendly. The room and toilet were clean and well air conditioned. Also the view to the river was nice and it was quiet to sleep at night. The location is sort of good, but keep in mind that it's quite a walk to the metro or to the main street. Wifi was working just enough to be able to browse the Internet.
The breakfast "buffet" was worse than in some 1-star highway hostel. Also the room service was unavailable by phone since the number was busy all the time (I would have needed extra blankets that were not available in the room).
Overall, based on these experiences, I rated this stay as average but definitely would consider coming again if the breakfast buffet is reworked.

We stayed in the Asteria for 4 nights as most other hotels in closer proximity to Nevsky were booked out due to big conference in town.
I can't say much about the hotel that is positive at all. The hotel is 1km from Nevsky Prospekt, and there isn't much on the south side of the Prospekt at all.
The rooms are terribly out dated with the worst mattress you could imagine, it honestly would not have been changed in 20 years. The pillows were so bad I had to use my inflatable neck support I use on planes as my main pillow with no spares.
The "nonsmoking" floor stunk of smoke, and so did I after having to sit in the hall way to pick up any signal of the free wifi!! In the end I gave up on that as it was slow and a waste of time.
Breakfast in the dining area was no better, they regularly ran out of supplies, no toaster, ran out of glasses for water (had to drink out of a cereal bowl!!'). People smoking at the breakfast table wasn't great either.
The staff were friendly and the hotel is incredibly over staffed, with 4 staff regularly behind the counter not doing much.
Fr the price we paid (and I think they inflated their prices because of the conference in town), we expected much better.

Unfortunately when we arrived, there was scaffolding outside the hotel, as they are obviously cleaning the facade. The hotel is located in front of the Fontanka river. You can get to one section of the Nevsky Prospekt - main street - in 15 to 20 minutes. Nevsky is very long and to give you an idea to get to the other extreme where The Hermitage is, will take you approx. 40 to 45 minutes (but there is lot to see in between!). The girls at reception spoke very good English and were always very polite. Although we did not book any tours through the hotel, they have a comprehensive catalogue (in Russian and English), with all the tours they offer. If you book a tour or take a taxi, be careful and say the name of the hotel clearly, as there is a "Hotel Astoria" and mistakes can be made. The guests were a mixture of locals and foreigners. Our room was small, but always impeccable, warm and quiet. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom had a good shower only, no bath. Windows had thick curtains, something very important during the "White Nights". Although they had not started, at this time of the year there was light until 11pm! Breakfast was very good and abundant. They had the usual (and boring) eggs and sausages and of course coffee, tea, various types of bread, juices, yogurt. For the more adventurous: pelmeni, cheese pies, barley, rice, pickles, fish, chicken, salads...and everything was very tasty. We ate so much that we had late lunches! There is a mini supermarket at the corner, where you can buy bottles of water (a must at St Petersburg) much cheaper. All in all, a nice, comfortable and conveniently located hotel.
