Located in a block of residential flats north of the city centre, the S-Terminal Apartments are around a thirty minute walk uphill from the main square, or an additional five minutes or so from the station. The number 18 bus, which can be taken from the square, goes past the apartments. Arriving at the front of a very nondescript block of flats, a building very typical of Murmansk, there was no obvious sign that there were apartments here. The main sign is found on the end of the building out of sight of the road, rather than along the front of the building. The arrangement is somewhat unconventional, with the main entrance also being the entrance to a fairly busy gym. However, once you approach the reception desk, you will be attended to efficiently. The staff’s English is very limited, but they are nonetheless helpful and friendly. The apartments seem to occupy the floor above the ground floor, and can be reached either via a passage from the gym or, once you are given your key, via an anonymous locked door on the front of the building. Attempts before arrival to confirm my booking via email received no response, and the reception staff appeared surprised at being presented with a confirmed reservation document from booking.com. Nevertheless, a room was available, and this turned out to be a very comfortable, bright and spacious room. Actually, for most of my five day stay, I think I was the only resident. The room had two single beds, a desk, some drawer space, a clothes rack and (always very useful) a suitcase stand. The TV had about ten channels, all in Russian, and the apartments have free wifi, although this is patchy at best. There is a shared kitchen area, kept spotlessly clean and well equipped, and an excellent shower room, with plenty of hot water available. The toilet is somewhat cramped but, again, is kept very clean. At £18 per night for the room in July 2016, I considered this to be very reasonable for the standard of accommodation provided. Entering and leaving the apartment takes a bit of time, as security is strong, with no less than three locking doors between your room and the street. The number 18 bus, which stops at the top of the small slope outside the apartment, goes to the city centre via another neighbourhood of flats. The journey takes around twenty minutes. Buses stopping on the near side of the road (uphill) head into town, while buses in the other direction terminate at the Monument to the Waiting Woman in the north of the city. You can take either a standard bus, or one of the smaller minibuses. Both are number 18, cost 25 roubles (July 2016), and follow the same route. There is a well-stocked supermarket around five minutes’ walk from the apartment, and a small mini-market even closer. Another excellent reason to stay here, apart from the low cost, is the proximity to several important Murmansk places of interest. The very beautiful Church of the Saviour on Water, built in 2002 by private donations, is only two or three minutes’ walk away, and 100 meters or so down the hill from that church is the Lighthouse Monument to lost sailors (also 2002). Beside the Lighthouse Monument is the memorial to the sailors of the Kursk submarine, which sank in 2000 with the loss of 118 lives. Around twenty minutes to half an hours’ walk away, or a short taxi journey, is the main symbol of Murmansk, the 35 metre tall Alyosha statue, built in 1974, from which splendid views of the city and the port can be enjoyed. The statue is a memorial to the defenders of the Arctic, commemorating the Russian lives lost there during the Second World War. Semyonovskoye Park, which is a leisure area with a lake, cafes and a funfair, is also located close by, near the Alyosha Monument. All in all, the S-Terminal Apartments are an excellent choice for budget accommodation in Murmansk.

We (3 girls) stayed in the Hostel for 3 nights and had a great time. The hostel is superclean and neatly decorated, the rooms are nice and comfortable. The lady working in the hostel was always in a good mood and very helpful. We were truly impressed by the hospitality. If we ever make it to Murmansk again, we will definitely stay in the S-Terminal Hostel!

Getting to Murmansk was surprisingly easy. even the small 40 min bus ride to the begining of the main 'Lenin Prospect' Road from the airport. The adventure started when trying to find the Hostel from that main road. The map I had that was provided by the Lonely Traveler Guide, Was completely usless. an any other maps that I tried to get from the internet were not much use either. so I had to go by me remembering my route I studied from Google earth, which I thought was very helpful, shame it couldn't provide street names!! anyway found it in the dark while everything covered in snow!! in the end. The Hostel gave very good first impressions, the lady was very friendly and so were the other receptionists. Still a shame they couldn't provide a map of the area. The hostel i didn't think was too far, but I guess I like walking!! it was only about 15/20 mins and there was a fantastic Karaoke Bar at the top end of Lenin Prospect near the hostel if you fancied good food, drink etc and a little sing before going back I highly recommend it. The hostels shower etc all good all clean, kitchen was self catering again clean and all mod cons. there is a 24 hour shop for food etc very friendly. Breakfast is provided which was healthly and simple. I had a tele and lots of room in my room there were 2 bunk beds which were empty so had the whold place to myself!. On a whole all was good, Only two things that i wish had happened was, seeing the Aurora Borealis and ice swimming!!.
