Stunning location on the banks of the Volga. I was able to walk on the frozen Volga to the Ipaty Monastery-admirng the hardy ice fishermen en route. Great views of the river from the hotel and vice versa. Staff very friendly and helpful and the hotel was very helpful before I arrived as I requested an early check in which was arranged at very little extra cost. Great breakfast too. NB Cash only.

A very nice hotel, furnished mostly with IKEA )) The prices are very reasonable. However, one should remember that they don't take cards. Cash only. ATMs are not easy to find, but there are some banks near the market place. The view is the best (that is if you take the room with a view - highly recommended). Watching the Volga river in the morning-during the day-in the evening is an experience in itself. Don't know if it's as nice during the winter, but when the weather is good it's a great joy. There's a possibility to sit outside on a 'balcony' and watch the waves and the sun... Romantic indeed! Location is good - not far from the central square and the market stalls (good cafes and restaurants and linen shops!). The embankment is a nice place for walking - popular among the locals. A superb restaurant is situated not far, on the same embankment as the hotel - "Старая пристань". This is where A Cruel Romance (a 1984 Russian drama film) was shot. Russian cuisine, nice cosy place. Early check-ins/ late check-outs are possible - important for those travelling with a night train from Moscow. But this service is for a special price. This info was not mentioned on hotel's website (I couldn't find it at least). Breakfast on a cafe is good, but the staff forgets to keep everything at place. You ask for coffee - they bring it - but then there's no cups, etc... Because the hotel is the former 'boat', we once experienced shortage of hot water (it takes time for water to heat up). All in all we had a lovely stay. I would recommend taking bigger rooms with a view - it is really worth it!

This boat hotel is literally on the waterfront in Kostroma. There are unobstructed river views from the balconies and the rooms are fresh, large and comfortable. Not a particularly great value (especially at weekends) -- I paid about US$90/night in this secondary Russian city. Breakfast and wi-fi are included, and the rooms have mini fridges. I've stayed here a couple of times, and the last time it was quite noisy. Being a converted boat, the walls are pretty thin so you can hear your neighbors.
