This is a reasonable jungle-hotel in a rather primitive city with very little other than nature to offer - that's how I'd sum up Cabaña Quinta, a quite fair option for Puerto Maldonado.
The area of the hotel is quite large and with a number...More
Nice but modest little hotel. Everything is clean. Hot showers. Beds could be better. No English channels. Good staff. Connected with a good restaurant with a wide menu. Does have pool table and a real pool. No air conditioner.
Stayed here not by choice but after a LATAM airlines delay meant we missed our transfers into the jungle. Stay for the night was amusing and an experience.Firstly I should point out that choice is limited in Puerto and if you want to stay there...More
This hotel is a flower in a gray, dull town. It's really an excellent hotel, nicely decorated, with yard full of plants, with spacious and comfortable rooms. Location is good, 2 minutes walk from the main street, 10 minutes walk (or 3 minutes with a...More

I think the theoretical answer is yes, but I am not sure that is the practical answer. We had a destination in mind before we selected the Hotel Cabina Quinta. I really did not research the idea of doing day trips from Puerto Maldonado. Most of the advertising I looked at was directed at a location where one would spend a 2-4 nights. If your goal is to actually see wildlife I don't think I would advise this approach. Seeing wildlife is so "hit or miss" as it is. If you are taking day trips from Puerto Maldonado you almost certainly will be doing most of your traveling to and from sites during peak viewing hours - early morning and late evening. One can always get lucky and see things in the least expected locations and at the least expected hours. However, depending on things like the time and money you have available, as well as the distance you have traveled to get to the Puerto Maldonado area and the likelihood of a return visit , you will probably want to give yourself the best chance to "be lucky." I believe you would have your best chance of seeing wildlife by finding a tour or location that puts you in the same area for at least a couple of nights. We used Inka Natura. There are other companies available too. So my answer is yes you could probably use Hotel Cabana Quinta (Puerto Maldonado) as a home base. However, if you are like us you will have traveled a long way to get to the Puerto Maldonado area. I don't think using Puerto Maldonado as your base for day tours will give you the best opportunity to see what you probably traveled a long way to see.
